Television Dream Teams

For pool to be steered back into the mainstream it needs to be on TV. For it to be on TV it needs to be entertaining to watch. With this premise, I want your ideas on the TV dream team. For me, it is players who are just a lot of fun to watch.

My North American dream team of five players would start with Earl Strickland, Keith McCready, Rodney Morris and Alex Pagulayan. Note that this list does not care how 'rusty' Keith might be, I am only after entertainment value here. What other player from North America would you put on this team? (They have to be alive and actually capable of hitting a ball.)

What about teams for Europe and Asia? Any thoughts?

I think Minnesotta Fats had it right with his popular TV show,
Celebrity Billiards
.

Let's not kid ourselves. It was The Color of Money that gave pool new life. Now that it's worn off, we haven't been able to recover.

We need celebrities playing pool. No offense meant against the present pool stars, but I seriously don't think it will be enough.

I think that before any particular character type or trait could provide the needed entertainment for TV, first you need viewers interested in pool.

In other words, think of a couple of sports / games (whatever) that you are completely UNINTERESTED in. Now, imagine a few ( in the minds of some promoter) colorful people playing them.

I for one, could apply this thought to any number of games, bowling, golf, tennis, checkers ... it doesn't matter, imagining that scenario, I don't believe I'd be any more inclined to watch something I otherwise had no interest in.

I think the only way to really get pool a jump start is to offer it in competitive school environments. Once the younger generation gets bit, pool will easily grow.

Dancing with the stars just came to my mind. I suppose you couldn't ask for any more colorful participants. But watching it for me would be like sticking bamboo shoots under my fingernails.

edit*** how do we get schools involved? Scholarships, and monetary gains for individual schools that promote the competitions, thats the ticket, and advertisers might eat the idea up as well.

I always knew you had good taste, Jerry! :grin-square:

Picking an entertaining European player, man, that's rough! :embarrassed2:

For the European Team, I'd have Tony Drago for his aggressiveness and smile, Sandor Tot for his tableside demeanor, Ronnie O'Sullivan who is the Earl Strickland equivalent in Britain (he did play on the IPT tour, so can play rotation pool), Marcus Chamat for his sense of humor, and Alex Lely for the eye-candy effect.

Put Scotty Townsend on there and you got yourself a team.

Jerry...Any American "dream team" without America's BEST player (SVB) is just a pipedream! jmo

I agree that Shane is top dog to pool enthusiasts like us, but for the entertainment value, I'm not so sure non-pool enthusiasts will understand or appreciate Shane for all that he offers. We do, because we know pool.

An American Dream Team for entertainment is a whole nother animal. Here's a few names that will rock the house: Luc Salvas, James Walden, Ronnie Wiseman, Shannon Daulton, Liljon, and Dennis Hatch!

JAM...Personally, his talent aside, Shane is a great role model and example of 1) overcoming adversity (growing up deaf), and 2) having the morals and manners that professional athletes in any sport should...but particularly in pro pool. This, of course, takes nothing away from Keith's "over the top" entertainment value!

I guess my point is that Shane on TV to somebody who knows nothing about pool may not be entertained. He is, of course, a good role model, but that has nothing to do with entertainment is all I am saying.

If you re-read Jerry's first post, it says "entertainment value."

JAM...People are INTERESTED in knowing about, and WATCHING people who have overcome adversity. Look at the S. African runner, at the Olympics last summer. He got a ton of attention...and it wasn't just about being in the Olympics. It's all how you spin it...

Let's not forget Jimmy Mataya.

"Entertainment value." "Entertainment value." "Entertainment value."

Pool is boring enough for even me to watch. Entertainment, however, is, again, something quite different.

Ah, I forgot about Pretty Boy Floyd....a must have on the team.
One of my favorite matches years ago was Jimmy and Keith....
..Keith won hill-hill....and the woofin' was a dead heat.

Keith was ahead 10-9 and got a shot on the 6 (lotta action on this match)
Keith said to the people betting on him "Gentlemen,go to the window."
...and immediately hooked himself on the 7....But Mataya broke dry at
hill-hill and Keith made a flawless out.
Jimmy Mataya could take a loss as good as anybody...he smiled and shook Keith's hand...
...and they went for a beer..Keith was buying..

How about "Billiards with the Stars!" There could be 3 annoying judges with running commentary from a guest host.

Johnny Archer is funny as hell when he's just shootin' pool, non-tournament situation. I'll bet Earl is too because his mind works so quickly (a requirement of good humor).

My impression is that when SVB is at the table he can't think about anything else like telling a funny story, etc. He's one of my favorite players but the general public wouldn't find him "entertaining."

The real question is do we know any celebrities who play a decent game of pool?

This may upset the purists and a whole lot of others but the audience should be included. When the audience is involved it adds excitement: the sharking, betting, jeering, etc.

Just remember how much excitement was created at the Mosconi Cups. What does the audience do now --- sit and clap on command by the production crew. How boring.

Players will learn how to focus and compete. Having a room full of fans cheering for you will certainly get the edrenaline going. Just give it an honest thought.

By the way: Jam ask Keith how much would an engaged audience bother his playing?

Best match I've seen like that was Keith vs. Alex at the 2003 U.S. Open 9-Ball.

The place was packed. I was sitting next to Buddy Hall in the stands sweating the match. Keith and Alex were both cutting up and had the crowd in stitches. The table alongside them was Johnny Archer and Howard Vickery. You could have fried an egg on Johnny's head, he was so angry at the distraction. :sorry:

On the TV table, two of the best players on the face of the earth, Efren and Bustie, kept looking over at Keith and Alex's table, watching their match instead of concentrating on their own. They eventually stopped playing, and the TV cameras switched over the Keith and Alex.

Across the stands, Marcus Chamat and Mika Immonen were sitting high in the bleachers. Marcus was laughing so hard, he fell out of his chair.

Everybody was having fun except me. I was furious at Keith for acting like a clown, dancing around the table on the tips of his toes like a ballerina, chirping between each shot.

Keith finally got on the hill and had a straight-in duck shot on the 9-ball. I mean, I could have made it left-handed, it was so easy. The entire match was a nail-biter, and I was sweating bullets. Finally, Keith gets to shut the door for the almighty win. He addresses the table, bends down to shoot, and then he makes this dramatic pause and says loudly for all to hear, "And you can put this on the Internet." He fired and came with a miss.

I will never forget that feeling. I said to Buddy, "What in the world are we going to do now?" Buddy said, "The only thing you can do is hope for another shot." Keith managed to get another shot the next game, and he won. But the entire back-and-forth was like something I've never seen in pool. Entertaining? Yes, for some. Would the pool purists like it? They would probably not. :grin-square:

All's fair in love and pool, I guess. Here's a shot taken later that night of Alex and Keith in front of the Chesapeake Conference Center.

Actually, the more engaged the audience, the better Keith plays.

He loves entertaining and believes pool should be fun.

Shannon Daulton has a great personality, I would have him ahead of a few on your list

I agree with JAM, Shane isn't entertaining at all. Even if he is a top pro who overcame adversity.
