Test your Draw ...

My pool playing buddy (driven) showed me this and I wonder how many of you can do it consistently.

Place the cue ball in the center of the table between the two side pockets.

Place an object ball in the center of the table one diamond higher than the cue ball.

Draw the object ball into the center of the short rail ahead of you and the cue ball back to the short rail under you.

How often can you make the cue ball beat the object ball to the short rail under you?

Be honest, and I'd be interested in feedback.

edit... If this is too tough, move both balls back a diamond each toward you until you can accomplish the shot. :)

I wouldn't label this as "test your draw". I'd call it "can you time this shot correctly?". This has nothing to do with the quality of your draw stroke. I've seen guys with monster strokes where the cueball may not even bite and start coming back until the OB had passed the cueball.

Here is an article with a diagram of the shot: http://www.sfbilliards.com/articles/2002-06.pdf The article has another drill to test your best low-speed draw.

While this shot doesn't measure raw draw power, it does measure the quality of medium-speed draw, where "quality" is defined as how much draw you can get on the cue ball for a given speed. For a power draw practice, see http://www.sfbilliards.com/articles/1999-09.pdf You can make this harder by moving the cue ball behind the line.

The best straight power draw I've seen is 2-1/2 table lengths (Mike Massey) from behind the line off a ball in the foot pocket.

What you want here is "quick draw." It helps to elevate the cue. For more info, see my July '09 BD article.

Dave

But elevating the cue is cheating, since you can draw the cue ball back without the object ball hitting any cushion. An unmentioned requirement of the shot is a level (as possible) stick.

You're not allowed to cheat? That's no fun. :(
