The Action Report & Keith McCready

Johnnyt said:
After watching Earl I?m not so sure I want to watch past champions and great road warriors compete if they are just a shadow of there former self. IMO its sad to watch a great player that can?t play at half his own speed. I can remember so many boxers that came back out of retirement only to embarrass them selves and in some cases get hurt real bad. I just like to keep my heroes in my mind the way they could play when they were at the top. Johnnyt

If you were to say that to Keith's face, I am not sure how he would react. He, like most pro players, have strong self-confidence in their skills set, and as such, he believes he can compete against the best of them on any given day. At the Joss event in Turning Stone, he defeated both Ralf Souquet and Mika Immonen, two of today's top guns.

Another characteristic of Keith's style is that he brings a little extra "something" to his game:

He is known to comedically interact a la Minnesota Fats with the audience. It is the fuel which ignites his engine, and the more engaged the audience is, the better McCready plays. Accu-Stats Video Productions recorded a match when McCready defeated Filipino Champion Jose Parica at the 2003 U.S. Open Nine-ball Championship and describes it as: "The most entertaining match that Accu-Stats has ever offered. Keith steals the show and the audience approval." Because of his ability to engage the audience, McCready has always been a fan favorite.

Keith McCready may not be a pool purist's cup of tea, but I can assure you that when he steps up to the plate, his table will always be crowded with fans, pool enthusiasts, curious onlookers, and even the players themselves. :D

And I don't think he's ready to go out to pasture just quite yet! In fact, I am 100-percent confident that he still has a little fire left in his jug! :p

I believe he does too Jenny and look forward to seeing him playing as always,is there anything set as definate for an Action Challenge or is it just a matter of finding someone to put in the box with him?

Jam that was not meant as a knock against Keith. I was talking about ALL the great players. If Keith can play like you say he still can (and you would know) of course just about every pool fan would want to see him in action again on TAR. He is great to watch and listen to. Again I'm sorry if what I wrote looked like I was just talking about Keith. Johnnyt

Jenny,
Not to knock Keith because I would say this about any veteran, including myself in a my area of expertise which isn't pool. The Action Challenge is 100 racks for the winner, plus whatever the loser wins. Keith may still have all the talent he has ever had and still be able get it going for a match, but would he have the stamina for a young stallion like SVB? Only Keith knows the answer to that question.
Even so, I think it could be an incredibly entertaining match. Though from what I've seen the camera angle and lack of good sound pickup would limit the entertainment Keith could provide. Action Challenge would have to enhance their video/audio recording capabilities to truly appreciate Keith.
JMHO.

Why do the matches have to be played even (head to head), it is a gambling match, right, why not have a better player at the time give some weight to a player that may play a little below another player (I am not knocking any player), that way we might not get these 30 game wins. I think it is great what TAR is doing, and hope they continue, we must support them as much as we can. Just my 2cents.

I understand your opinion.

As far as stamina, I think Keith's stamina may surprise quite a few folks who don't know him well. I have trouble keeping up with him at tournaments.

I have witnessed him engage in action games all night long at various pool rooms in my area. His best gear comes into play when he has been up all night long. In fact, he reminds me very much of that horse Seabiscuit.

Of course, my opinions are prejudiced, and as such, they may not whole much weight to other points of view about Keith's capabilities as a pool player. One thing for sure, he does not lack stamina and still has game. That's my story, and I am sticking to it.

OK, so I suggest that Keith play a race to 100, but not over a 3 day period. Once they start, they play two shot rollout, b.i.h. and play non-stop until someone reaches 100. A MARATHON.

To make it even more interesting, it could be interactive and everytime Keith has a beer, the entire viewing audience would be required to have a beer. It would be our goal as viewers to avoid slipping off the La-Z-Boy into a puddle on the floor before the match is over.

Whatever is done, if it involves Keith, it will be ENTERTAINING. :)

Tell you what, SVB keeps bangin them out like he's been doin there aint gonna be no action. He is gonna have to give some wood out to continue to gamble. Unless there is alot more fishes out there then I thought!! ;)

I agree with this. Nobody is questioning the entertainment value. Watching Shane play ten ball is awesome and watching Earl's antics were entertaining as always, but people are just donating to Shane as far as the match goes. I think its gonna have to be a Phillipino to make it a good match. Unless he's giving weight, any match with ANY American in ten-ball is gonna be a mismatch right now.

How bout this one Doug......SVB got action w/ Keith, iffffff Shane goes drink, drink w/ Kieth during the set! :D

Forget Shane vs. Keith -- would Keith even beat Earl?

I agree, you will need to bring Dennis in to give Shane a match. I think JAM indicated that Keith would play Shane with 10 on the wire the last night of the Shane/Earl match -- but IMHO, Keith would need at least as much weight as Earl would need to win -- if not more.

The question is, who would win a 10-ball race to 100 between Keith and Earl (there would be no contest between Keith and Shane of course) -- and right now....I'm thinking that I would probably take Earl in this match up.

Ha! Good one....I've decided to switch back and forth between the two match-ups -- and go with whichever one suits my point at the time....duh! ha

Hey Smorgass Bored and Get A Grip, you guys the same guy having a convo with eachother, some split personality going on here or what?

Ok, I've got a real interesting/entertaining idea for the match-up.....^_^

......The one guy who can keep up with Keith in yapping is Jimmy Mataya, but to make it even more interesting, I propose a scotch doubles match : Keith and Jam (Jenny) against Jimmy Mataya and his older brother !....for those of you who don't know, Mataya's brother is a high roller gambler who plays pool, but not good - about like an APA rated 4.....

......What do you think Jenny ?.....^_^.....My money would be on your team, by the way.
