It was a great tournament over the past three days featuring some great one pocket with some fantastic players all thanks to Tres Kane and the Bates family of Bullshooters for making it happen. The prize pool was $10,000 with 29 players, the entry fee was $200 with $4000 added and no money taken out of the entry fees which is unheard of and the players really get paid good. Where did the other $200 come from?, from our very own Jay Helfert. When Jay heard it was $9800 in prize money, he reached in pulled out $200 and said make it an even $10,000!

There were good crowds there sweating the one pocket, the crowd was around Frost as he beat Terry Osborne in a match that took around 30 minutes for a race to 3. Action was alive and well with some good sets going on between people around the room in the after hours, $500 one pocket and ten ball sets. I even got to play Mark Griffin some cheap one pocket for a few hours, we both had a good time doing so.

Bullshooters is a big room with plenty to do, it has over 40 tables, darts, shuffleboard, full bar and plenty of TVs, UFC was on Saturday night which packed them in. The food in this place is very good and the bar is full with all your wants. They have lots of Gold Crowns, a few Diamonds, bar tables and even 8 footers too. If you are in Phoenix a stop to Bullshooters will be something I recommend, it is the largest room in Arizona I do believe.

The favorites in the tournament were Frost, Parica and Ulrich but none of them had an easy time in this tournament. Frost lost to Briseno to go to the hot seat match with Ulrich in a fantastic hill to hill match. Parica lost to Eric Young and then finally Bernie Pettipiece on the last day to finish in 7th/8th place. Ulrich had a tough time with Tom Neil from Tucson as there match went hill to hill but ultimately Louis would end up in the hot seat of the tournament. Bernie lost his first match to battle all the way back through the tournament which is a great feat but the story for Bernie as of late in the past few tournaments he has played.

I have posted the final 8 and the payouts of the tournament and also some videos of matches captured during the three days, I hope you enjoy them. Thanks to George Teyechea and Jay Helfert for commentating the finals, The Bates family for the hospitality, the players who showed up to play and fans to sweat it, and of course Tres Kane for digging deep in his pockets to add all that money and make it happen. I hope this becomes an annual event and perhaps some sponsors can get involved so it does happen again.

The spot for the CSI US Open One Pocket was drawn and went to Jose Gonzales, could not go to a nicer guy.

1st - Scott Frost - $3400
2nd - Louis Ulrich - $2000
3rd - Gus Briseno - $1500
4th - Bernie Pettipiece - $1100
5/6th - Eric Young & Tommy Tokoph - $600
7th/8th - Jose Parica and George Teyechea - $400

Awesome write up Lenny. Wish I could have been there for the whole thing. Tres gave a lot of time, effort and resources to this tournament and I'm glad it went well!

Hey Lenny, Thanks for posting up all those matches;
Went to watch Bernie Pettipiece vs Jose Parica
http://youtu.be/snj-YTW4iUE
but probably due to lack of sleep it links to Scott & Bernie, just wanted to give you a heads up. Thanks again

Thanks for the broadcast, Lenny. I spent most of Saturday evening watching, and enjoyed it very much. Keep up the good work. You have earned a Tramp Stamp, of excellence.

I must say, the event was great. There were some awesome matches both on the stream table and on the other tables. I watched the Tres Kane vs Jose Parica match on Saturday and it went hill, hill, and was really a good match. Tres can play some one pocket. Bernie played great. Gus also played outstanding as usual. Eric Young putting Jose on the losers side was some good shooting. Got to see Jay Helfert play which was a treat. Scott, Louis, and the old legend Jose all put on a show and made some amazing shots. Bullshooters is a great room. Full bar, good food, plenty of well kept tables, TV's, plenty of seating. Hands down the best room in AZ. Congrats to all the players and thanks to everyone who made it possible and worked so hard to make it run so smoothly. I really enjoyed myself watching some great one pocket. What other sport can you watch pros play for free?

Lenny, get some rest man, I know it was an exhausting weekend with all the hours you put in. The stream that I watched on Friday and a little Saturday evening after I left was awesome as usual, you are a true asset to the AZ pool scene. Hats off to you sir.

Anyone who missed some of the matches Lenny posted should definitely watch em. Some great pool to be seen.

Good show on the stream Lenny...

Tres has been around the block a few times and knows how to run a tournament...I am not surprised at all how smooth the tournament went.

Side note Lenny...I am actually starting to play some 1-pocket...perhaps we can get together for some practice sometime so you can show me a thing or three.

Thanks Lenny, I really like the "crew" at Bullshooters. A really great bunch of guys with an appreciation for One Pocket. My game was a bit rusty, just never enough time on the table for me. I lost to Tom Neil in the second round in a hard fought match, won a match on the losers side and then had to play Bernie Pettipeace to get into the money. Wow, does he play good.

That was the first match where I started to get in stroke and I put Bernie in all kinds of bad spots and he kept escaping :). We had some wonderful safety battles that went on for twenty or more innings. My best game I had him down 7-4 and he hung in there and found a way to win. I'm not surprised he did so well in the tournament. As for Scott, he is a world class player! He has brought the level of One Pocket up all over Arizona, just by showing everyone how the game can be played. I was impressed with all the good players in this event.

Scott has matured into a good man too, with some solid plans for his future. I like the way he handled himself throughout the event, confident in his game, yet willing to compliment his opponents on their play.

Tres Kane is a class act all the way, reaching in his pocket to add 4K to this tournament. I can't think of anyone else who has done anything like that, other than Bob Jewett with his Straight Pool Challenge at DCC. So Tres is in good company! He did an excellent job as well in running the event, with a nice assist from Terry Osborne.

Thanks to you also Lenny for making some great One Pocket available for all to see. You put in long hours every day to make that happen. Plus Bullshooters is one very cool poolroom. There aren't many left like that, huge places with a variety of games for people to enjoy. From Ping Pong to darts, bar pool to shuffleboard, Bullshooters had it all. Add to that excellent food and you have a winning combination. Every city should have a room like this, but it takes someone like Mike Bates to make it happen.

I had fun and I look forward to returning soon. I'll try to do better next time.
