The best shot you ever made

I'll give you one best and one most memorable.

Best...I was playing as Thorsten Hohman's partner in a charity Scotch Doubles event sponsored by a mutual dentist friend. I had an OB a half ball off the rail about a half diamond from the right foot corner.

The next OB was at the middle of the head rail and the only open route I had was 3 rails to about the space of 2 dollar bills placed edgewise...not end to end.

I went for it because I figured if he got hooked he could easily kick off a long rail...but I ended up PERFECT...at which point Thorsten said....
"BREELYUNT."

The most memorable shot was draining the 9 to get on the hill against Allison Fisher who I have played many times but never beaten. I didn't beat her then either...but I SAID I was going to snap the 9 (kiddingly of course)...and then rared back a DID IT!

For everything else...there's Master Card!

safeties

Shooting on the old bar tables with a little deeper cloth, I used to run out to a safety whenever I could. I sometimes nudged balls early in a run to position them where I needed them for a safety later. The ultimate was to use two balls and a rail for a cue ball trap. Shot perfectly with the blocker balls perfectly positioned it was sometimes possible to squeak by one rocking it slightly and have it settle back into the hole it had been sitting in.

Literally an impossible shot to not foul on since there was not a ball's width between the two balls or any ball and the rail. This wasn't a shot I got to make too often but the look on somebody's face when they realized there was no possible shot made it worthwhile to try to set up.

I did this one at Jointed cue playing Johnny O. a couple of months ago.
He played a safe to try screwing with me, taking the cueball off of the 13 to tye me up on his 11. I couldn't find a clear shot to kick at it, so I called the five in the side, jack up, shot a jump shot off of the rail from about a ball and a half, clear the ten, the five fell just over pocket speed and the cueball rolled out about three inches for a clear shot at the 8.

For a no-other-options shot, I'd have to say that if it wasn't one of my best shots, it was a damn good hail mary!

(Sorry, still trying to figure out how to run the cuetable thing.)

Inspired by the great Efren Reyes, I made this shot playing 8-ball with bar-rules, which meant I needed the 8 in the same pocket as my last ball.

However, the coolest shot I have ever seen was done by Roberto Gomez when he was in Oslo. He was also playing 8-ball, against a local guy, Johnny Lotto (lucky as hell). The bet was 40 $ a rack, and they had agreed to play 20 racks. The handicap was that Roberto Gomez couldn't choose solids or stripes, he needed what went first on the break. Also Roberto needed the 8 in the same pocket as his last ball, while Johnny didn't need to pocket the 8 at all.

Roberto had made 4 B&R and was on his fifth, needed the 8th in the sidepocket, but missed it and the 8 went to rest near the cornerpocket.

Johnny made 6 stripes, and had an easy ball left, to win, and he softrolled it against the pocket but it hanged. So now Roberto HAD to make the 8, or play a dead on safety, which was not easy with the layout :o. Roberto banked the 8 ;)

He won 11 straight racks with this handicap, before winning 16-4.

Jeez.. I feel retarded, I can't remember shots or situations that well, unless they come up in a game, and then I think I'm having a Deja Vu!

I was playing 8 ball against a friend for some small money and ran out really nicely besides getting hooked. We were playing his rules where you have to hit the 8,i was in a bind here, but i did the 5 railer on slow cloth, the cue ball just made the 8 ball in the pocket, one of the best shots i have ever made.I have made this on a bar table playing bank the 8 but this was tougher since the table was slow.

I like this shot. Quite a show stopper. I think I may have to try this myself one day. ;)

so many. but I guess one of my fave would be banking 4 consecutive balls playing 9-ball (not banks). and 9 ball banks was not even a game yet. now why in the hell would I do those bank shots? simple, I got myself hooked and out of position trying to break some clustered balls. I was out of stroke and the table was slow. also left an impression on the ball racker (another witness). anyway, my opponent felt miserable thinking that I toyed his feelings that I did that on purpose to make him feel that I did not intend to pocket those balls due to my uncharacteristic out of stroke performance. I just said, well I was just lucky !

I've made a lot of "best shots", but I think the thing which makes the "best best shot" -vs- a "who cares best shot" is WHO you are playing when you make that best shot and WHAT you are playing for.

My "best best shot" was a shot I made to take 1st place in a money tournament playing against a master pool player. We were playing 8-ball and due to my opponent's safety play, I had only 1 option to win due to the 8 being tied up with one of his balls. I had to shoot my last ball in with a fast stun shot and just the right amount of english to get the cue ball to slide sideways to the opposite rail, then come back and break out the 8. I actually was able to do this and surprised myself! Then I had a bit of luck... After the breakout I was left with an easy shot on the 8 and won.

I've had a lot of better best shots than that, but don't remember them because I was just playing a friend for fun. When I am playing one friend of mine, I know that I made a "best shot" because he will say "Whatever!" after I make the shot. I just smile...

My best shot against a top player:

I played Efren on my first night in Manila, about a year ago, at Side Pocket Billiards in Quezon. Hcp 10-5, I had left corner, needing only 1 and Efren needed only couple of balls.

There were about 50 spectators for this match, and the score was 2-2, race to 3.

I decided to try to cut the 3-ball, and move the 5 and 8 away in case I missed the 3-ball. I got lucky ;)

I made this shot freshman year in college, would be 1991 or so. It's a bit similar to the Hustler shot Eddie makes, but this one I think is harder. I think it is probably one of the few shots I will remember forever. I called the shot, it dropped, people around the table went nuts and I became "The Man" to beat in that rec room from then on :D

Definitely harder than the shot in the Hustler. That one was set up with the first OB on the rail so all you had to do was bank it like the second OB wasn't even there. This one looks like it involved a little work. Good shot.

I had a shot come up a few weeks ago in an 8ball tourney. This was to get to the hill. Player with the stripes thought he played a good safe, I play a lot of banks and it paid off this time. Made the object ball and went under the 8 for the same pocket to get win the match.

One of my more memorable shots that brought a smile to my face.

Peace, JBK

I remember this shot because the guy I was playing against refused to believe that I would think to do such a thing. I had just started learning one pocket from this guy and thought that this shot would seem obvious since it comes up there once in a while.

The game was 10 ball for a couple beans a game.

Not my best ever but certainly one I remember quite good.

Playing 8ball (team league), score is hill hill, my opponent played safe and now his balls are easy combo's into both corner pockets.

Something like this

What was the best shot you have ever made while playing against someone? If you have more than one you would like to share feel free to share.

This was a shot I made about nine years ago on 4-1/4" pockets, Gold Crown, Simonis 760 w/centennial balls and a Red Circle cue ball.

The scenario, my opponent, a very notable southern California one-pocket player and room owner, and I are playing one-pocket. He needed one and I needed them all. His winning ball, the 2, was in the jaws and it's my shot.

If I had chosen to make the 2 and foul, he would have still had the game winner with ball in hand on the 1.

So this is what I did.

I fired the one in the upper right hand corner with high left, going two rails to pocket the 2 and followed the cue ball in after it to scratch. Therby, spotting three balls and leaving no winning shot.

P.S. I still lost the game as I now needed four balls to his one.
