The Final 6

With the exception of Stalev (everyone agrees he's great, but I think there were other favorites) it looks like we've got what many predicted would be the final 6.

I think the final two will be either Manalo / Reyes or Souquet / Reyes.

I think Efren will rise to the occassion in this final round robin, as he typically gains momentum as tournaments go on and the stakes increase.

Manalo and Souquet are like machines at this point... whichever gets the more lucrative rolls will advance. I'd hate to try and pick which one, though.

And the winner in the finals? Reyes all the way, even if Ralf has his number.

If winning percentages for tiebreakers become a factor again, here are the favourites:

Manalo 61.41
Soquet 61.99
Reyes 61.51
Stalev 57.3
Orcollo 56.86
Hohmann 55.44

A tie for 2nd place(in wins) will favour the guy with the highest winning percentage, while the loser goes home.
RJ

11 matches inthe last three days have been decided by tiebrekers and winning percentages.

I think the big match is at 10am when Efren and Marlon face off.

Reyes, Efren v. Manalo, Marlon 2
Souquet, Ralf v. Orcollo, Dennis 8

Reyes, Efren v. Orcollo, Dennis 2
Manalo, Marlon v. Stalev, Evgeny 8
3:00 PM

Orcollo, Dennis v. Manalo, Marlon 2
Stalev, Evgeny v. Souquet, Ralf 8
5:30 PM
Manalo, Marlon v. Souquet, Ralf 1

Hohmann, Thorsten v. Manalo, Marlon 1
Stalev, Evgeny v. Orcollo, Dennis 2
Reyes, Efren v. Souquet, Ralf 8
Official Schedule for July 29, 2006

I'm proud to say that the two I picked for the finals before the tourney are now in the last six--Manalo and Souquet. I don't know if they'll make it, and frankly I'm rooting for Efren. He will be very tough to beat. But, this will be exciting however it goes. Don't count Orcullo out either.

My odds:

Reyes 2-1
Manalo 2-1
Souquet 2-1
Orcullo 3-1
Hohmann 3-1
Stalev 5-1

Here were the odds from the
Stan James website before the tourney began:

Reyes 14 to 1
Soquet 16 to 1
Manalo 16-1
Orcollo 18-1
Hohmann 20-1
Stalev 150-1

If Stalev pulls off a major upset some Russian dudes are going to be collecting a lot of Ruble's.:D

I'm picking Stalev and Reyes and I'm betting Reyes will be a very very rich man in a year, if so, nobody will question who is the best player in the world:-)

But will he be the best person to carry the torch or be the headline for the IPT? I'm not sure, he certainly is a great guy, no problems there.

.

With the exception of Stalev, I think all these guys would be perfect to headline the IPT tour. I single out Stalev as the excption only because the other guys are more well known than he. Stalev may be a stand-up guy, but the rest of the pool world doesn't know that as well as for the other finalists.

-Hohmann is a total class act and a multiple world champion. Equally humble and amiable as he is talented.

-Reyes - enough said. This man needs no explanation.

-Manalo certainly made a name for himself the past 2 years and is a gentleman.

-Souquet is the epitomy of European tact and machine-like capabilities.

-Orcullo has certainly captured the hearts of many -- former poor fisherman from the Phils, going on to become one of the top pros in the world.

I couldn't be happier with the outcome of this IPT tournament so far. I think the sport will benefit a lot from all the players (Stalev included) in this last round robin and then in the finals.

Along with everyone else here, I'm rooting for Efren. How can anyone pull against him? He's a genius on the green felt and he's impossible to dislike. As well, I want all those guys who think he's lost his edge to eat their words. Sure he didn't make it past the group stages in the last WPC, but I'd like to chalk that up to a bad week. He won the IPT KOTH, this year's 1-p DCC division and a leg on the San Miguel 9-ball Tour. If he can snap this off I'd be a happy camper. Then again, at $350K richer so would he!

If Soquet or Hohmann win, they will be $350,000 richer.

If Efren wins:
Anywhere from 40-100 Filipinos will be accumulativily $350,000 richer.

I've read more than one article that Efren supports or at least helps out about 40 Filipinos and family with his winnings.I thinks his generosity is just fantastic.

I'm hoping Efren wins.
Go Reyes go!

My sentimental favorite is Efren, but I am still going with the Bus Driver on this one, Dennis Orcullo. And I think either Manalo, Efren, or Evgeny to meet him. Evgeny plays like he is in practice.

Stalev would be perfect to headline the IPT tour. He has the heart of a lion and his stroke is pure poetry.

(PS Steve, I gave you 9-7 once in Santa Monica)

Stalev has looked very impressive the last couple of rounds. Very calm and collected...moreso even than Orcollo who is generally unphased by anything, and who never seems to play bad. (Orcollo only ever seems to lose when his break doesn't work well combined with his opponents hitting a streak).

Ralf is playing like a machine and can not be counted out. Manalo is brilliant but I wonder if he'll be able to hold his focus if he loses one early.

Efren has shown over and over again here that he can always come up with the goods when he is under pressure, so I'd be crazy to write him off.

But Hohmann making it would really surprise me...he is a workhorse, but he has struggled from what I have seen.

If I had to pick 2, it would be Stalev and Orcollo.

Finals

Efren turned on the 'Magic' yesterday, and evidenced by his scorecard, and I just can't help feeling that it will be:

Efren & Manalo in the final (Apollo - Rocky fight).

But, it is also still possible to maybe have an Efren - Souquet final.

I had to go to sleep after round 3 but almost a few suprises, Orculla and Manalo did indeed lose their last two but as I thought their high % saw them through. Ok gloating first...

I predicted no americans in the last 6, with filipinos filling mose spots, AND 1 suprise Brit. Given that Appleton and Peach only missed out by a fraction of a % I think I was pretty damn close! (I also tried to avoid picking individual favs for the final group and manged to get 3 of them with Appleton and Alex costing me 5 :( )

On the other hand I certainly have to hand it too Efren, my heart wanted to pick him but at 52, my head said no given the format. What a guy, he's only lost 3 in the whole event now and is NOW my fav to win it. :D

Given that again only 2 advance the % is going to be huge, this is why Efren, Manalo, and Ralf start off with a huge advantage, really Stalav, Dennis, and Hohman really need to win 5 or maybe 4 to advance, I;m going for...

Efren or Manalo v Ralf

:D

My Final 2

First I'd like to point out that 4 of my 6 picks made the final round, Efren, Thorsten, Manalo and Souquet. :D Proving once again that a blind squirrel will find an acorn!

For the final, I'm torn between Efren, Manalo and Souquet. Efren has won the most matches, Manalo has the largest % of games won and Souquet is just strong between the ears.

I pick Efren to win the whole thing.

Dont forget Souqet has won, the DCC, BCA, and Masters 9 ball this year!

He's going for the lot!

Again, notice how they pit the Filipinos against each other right away at the beginning rounds of the day, just like they did so yesterday. Again, this is the best way to do things.

Man, that Efren vs. Souqet match at 8pm will definitely be a decider.

I think the final two is totally up for grabs. Stalev is the darkhorse...he made it this far, so why not all the way? Hohmann is a proven champion, and his past championships speak for themselves. Orcullo is probably the one with the most natural ability. Manalo is probably seeking inspiration from above, considering the loss of his father last week. Souquet is having just a monster year. And of course Efren hasn't lost a title whose prize money is over 100k.

Gotta go with past history...Efren in the finals. And I think Orcullo finds a way to defeat the Germans.

Who will be the final two?
RJ
Well, I tried to write off everyone else, but in the end, the same four names that probably came up more than any of the others are right there.

Manalo, Reyes, Hohmann and Souquet.

Reyes is getting stronger and stronger as he smells the cash.

Manalo is again the top performer, as he was in Orlando. But, he faltered, and Reyes and Bustamante didn't. If he doesn't falter, he'll win.

But then again, Souquet has won every major title this year, so he's sure to win.

And of course, Hohmann, whose machine-like performance is patterned after Ralf is going to be tremendously difficult to beat given his recent 14.1 win.

So, all that being said, I figure Stalev will beat Ocollo in the finals.

Well my first choice is always Efren, I didn't name my cat after him for nothing and I'd love to see Orcollo in the finals. I watched him play in the UPA event in Florida and he has a beautiful, graceful way about him. I also like the fact that he earned his way onto the tour, not that any of these final 6 don't deserve a spot on the tour. It's is just more of a fairy tale ending if he makes the final!
