The hit of McDermott cues?

Hi yall,

I have been here at this forum for a while, but it is the first time I posting. I really appreciate the info and knowledge you guys providing here. Thanks!

So... I am interesting to buy a McDermott cue, professional series. How does McDermott hit in general? I heard it is kind of soft hit, but how soft if comparing muecci. And I have noticed that there are 2 types of joint in this series, McDermott Quick Release(made of metal) and wood to wood(plastic). I would assume that plastic is softer than metal, am I right? If so, how big difference between those 2 joint?

Thanks alot

I have found that McDermmots have a stiffer hit than a lot of cues. Speaking from my limited experience, it's stiffer than a Viking and much stiffer than a Meucci.

As far as Joints go, I've never used a McD with a stainless joint so I wouldn't know.

Thanks man!

Anybody else? Please recommand some soft hitting cues.

Huebler has a semi soft hit.....but the softest would have to be meucci imop....you could even throw an OB shaft on one and it would soften it up even more....but for quality and soft playing ability with better quality I'd have to go with the Huebler

A huebler hits in between a Schon and a Meucci imop (tho it leans a little closer to the stiffer side than the whippy side like Meucci)....if the huebler didn't have the nylon insert and was piloted instead they would be more like the schon.

happy hunting,

i have a mcd 3/8x10 and a quick release downstairs i will go and try them out and let you know the difference between the two.

GreyGhost, I googled Huebler, it seems that it is discontinued cue. Only find few used ones on Ebay. Thank you!

Poolshooter74, have you tested out between those 2 joints? Eager to know, please tell!

yes it seemed like the 3/8x10 gave more feedback/vibration on the hit and the steel joint reduced the feedback/vibration. only other variance was linen on the 3/8 and leather on the steel joint. otherwise they shot as straight as my eye and stroke allowed.

yes paul doesn't make cues anymore....if you could find one in good condition they are good cues and can usually be had in good condition from 200-400$

To me a McD is built similar to the dimensions of a house cue. They seem to be on a straight taper from the tip to the butt cap. The butt feels thicker than a Schon and always seemed butt heavy. This may be due to the fact that you can buy weight bolts to change the weight and many owners do that thinking that they need a certain weight and don't realize that they are also changing the balance point.

A lot of great player use them but they think that the older series from he 80's are better than the newer series.

What you need to do is try the cues you are interest in and make your own opinion. It is just too hard to buy a cue on someone else's opinion. You can't judge a cue on looks alone.

As for joints I am not a fan of a quick release as they tend get "stuck" together.

I bought a McDermott "G" Shaft with a graphite core which is light weight and stiff. The hit is solid and makes a sharp noise at impact because it is stiff?

The last cue that made a similar sound was a 60"s TAD - stiff kiln dried maple.

McDermott cues look better than they play IMO. They do come with a lifetime warranty which is a big perk in my book. My friend had one and it had a little water damage to the shaft and they replaced it no questions asked and even let him get a 12mm shaft rather than the 13mm.

The amount you pay for a McDermott cue you can check out some other cues. Personally I would look at a Jacoby or a Joss. You can pick up either for around the same price and get IMO a superior cue.

Huebler and McDermott

I now play with a Schon as my primary player. For the last 30 years I
played with both McDs and Hueblers. Of the McDs I liked the stainless jointed the most. The EK series in the 90s felt good to me. I have had C, D, and a few newer and none felt as good. I have collected and played Hueblers for years. They have a distinctive feel like a one piece, but all are not the same. I find the older cues more stiff and crisp in most cases.
I have one old and one new Huebler production cues still available for sale. I doubt you will find a newer one than mine. One of Pauls last cues. I also have an inexpensive McD EK-1 I would sell shipped for $135. It plays as good as the high dollar McDs.
