The Magician lost his magic?

NO WAY! Efren is still awesome!

well his last memorable win was the 2007 Derby Classic , after that it's all downhill, i like him to be remembered as the "great one" not playing in bar rooms just to earn money , i hope he can open a billiard academy in the Philippines to help Filipino pool players:)

There's never a need to "pack your bag" from the game of pool. There is ALWAYS money to be made somewhere, somehow from continuing on. It beats the hell out of working on an assembly line, like I did for thirty years!!! On top of that, on a bad day for him, he's probably still one of the top 25-30 players in the world, IMO.

Maybe because he spent most of the time at One Side, gambling (and beating) the other top filipinos...

Efren doesn't travel as much around the world anymore, cause he doesn't need to. But he still plays a lot of pool, and beat most of the guys he matches up with...

Efren doesnt have to play in bar rooms to earn money. Look at his earnings in the last few years 2006 Winnings: $644,960.00; 2005 Winnings: $279,169.00; 2004 Winnings: $124,150.00; 2003 Winnings: $106,050.00; 2002 Winnings: $126,200.00; 2001 Winnings: $215,362.00. He is doing pretty well I would say and that isn't even counting his gambling wins. He is getting older but definitely still the master.

I'm still not sure. though he might have some problems pertaining to arthritis which is really a pain and could really affect a person's pool performance, I don't believe that it's time for him to say goodbye. I believe this belief of him hanging up his jersey was due to his lack of tournament appearances. however, one's lack of appearance doesn't mean that the person does not have it anymore. besides, how many times did he played this year?

regarding Efren's current 1P skill level this year, I do believe that most people here will agree with me that still no Pro player would play Efren even for the money. when the time comes when Efren asks for weight, that is the only time I would agree with you that it's time for him to retire, but for now, let's enjoy his performance while there still something left in his tank.

I think Efren is patiently waiting for Grady to hold a Senior's Event..

We can all laugh and make sarcastic jokes about this, but I would be curious to know his attitude about it. Efren played for so long at such a high level, that it is just possible that the game is not much fun for him anymore. After all, nothing lasts forever. It is often hard to explain and harder to understand, but when the motivation is gone, sometimes it just doesn't resurface. After all, what does he have to prove?

As long as there are arguments, many will consider him the best of all time.

I said he was starting to slide on a thread about 6-months ago and most just jumped in my *hit. Starting to slide after playing highstakes pool and 1000's of major tournaments for over 40-years is no disgrace. I'm sure he has a lot of aches and pains and stiffness in his joints. On top of that he never was a health nut anyway.;)

But I said sliding, but nowhere near finished with pool if he doen't want to be. He isn't in the top teir of 9-ball or 10-ball anymore but he is still in the top teir in 8-ball, 1-hole, and maybe bank pool also IMO.

Players like Reyes that have great shot-making, great postion, kicks and safties don't fade away fast unless it's a health problem that can't be helped. Top players that depended on their shot-making from anywhere on the table to carry the day are the first to slide and slide fast when they can't make the long shots like they could drill from 8-foot before. If they don't have the other skills to fall back on the other player just has to leave them long,,,and it's as simple as that.

I hope that he has saved his money anong the way. The one thing I would hate to see after he helped so many people is to end up broke. Johnnyt

let's just say, technology caught up with his age ! :D :D :D

it will be interesting to see if pool players are only allowed to use 1 particular type of cue sanctioned and provided in the tournament. let's just see how would these players perform without the benefit of cue preference and technology advancements.

1( Get rid of the jump cue. 2) Get rid of the jump cue. There...I feel better. Johnnyt
