The proper way to pronounce Orcollo

I just got off the phone with a Filipino friend who is running for Mayor over there and he hung out with Efren and posse for the last 4 1/2 months. :p

He said the correct way to pronounce Orcollo is Or-cool'-ee-o, which is probably why a lot of people thought there was a 'U' in his name. It also seems like they added another syllable to his name.

Our friend gave me another unpronouncable name for him, which denotes where he is from, so I am not even going to try and pass that one on, but that is what he is called over there.

He also said that no one wants to play him! Nobody, not Efren, Manalo, Lining, Kiamco, or Pagulayan. I know Alex just beat him, but Dennis is regarded as the best player there - The Bus Driver! That seems hard to believe that my idol Efren doesn't like the game.

Linda,

Pronounce it "or cool' yo" and you will be close. He has beaten all the top filipinos for the cash and many times. Once you see him play, you will see why. He handles the cue ball like few players ever, including the great Efren. Of course, he can't beat Efren at One Pocket.....yet.

This guy has as much talent at pool as anyone I've seen in the last 25 years. The last guy who opened my eyes like this was Mark Tadd, who had a huge 9-Ball game, every bit as strong as Earl. And Mark did not have the over all ability that Dennis has.

If you could take the best qualities of Parica, Rafael and Efren and roll them into one, you have an idea what this guy can do.

In the Philippines, two l's is pronounced as LY.
So, you break it down to OR COOL YOU.
In Spain two l's is pronounced as J or LY.
Yes, they have the lisp.
They would say POH JOO for pollo ( chicken ) or PAUL YO.
The Philippines was occupied by Spain for 400+ years.
I don't think anyone wants to play Dennis some 9-ball right now.
I was told he beat Deuel here for the cash and was wanting to play Archer but I have no way of verifying the story.

That's freakin scary Jay.
You should take a trip down to the south of the islands where Dennis came from.

Yep, that's the place. It's GORGEOUS!

Jay, your typing is better. ;) It is Or-cool-yo.

Here is a picture of Dennis in Reno at your tournament.

And here's a better picture of Orcollo and Basavich. I also have a little film clip of him running out against Basavich.

I really appreciate your candid comments here about Orcollo. No matter how his name is pronounced he can damn sure play.

I watched all I could of him when he was here for the IPT qualifier. He seemed unflappable and had the ability to make ALL the shots.

To me he reminded me of Luat more than Parica or Efren. I know alot of people dont know that much about Luat but IMO he is onpar with anyone
including Efren. I was lucky enough to see Luat and Andam some gambling around the country and both of those guys just flat hit super high gears.

Luat gave a good player of about Dave Hemmahs speed the 7 and last three in a race to 13 for 5k and after a couple games for each of them
Luat ran the set out on a really tough Diamond in Mobile AL. There
were no more sets after that! Other than that time I have seen him
play flawless. I always wondered about his drive to be out there. Efren, Parica and others have found ways to be out there getting after it while some others have not.

My friend also told me Santos got his visa straightened out now so that he is free to come and go, back and forth to the US.

Frank, did you see Luat and Davenport hook up at HT back in '95.
Race to 17 for like 5K. Luat ran over Kim in the first set.
Kim asked for the 8 and got it and Kim won the second set and they called it off. Mark backed Luat.
Andam was in at HT that time too. He just placed second to Archer in San Diego the week before. That was the year Swanee passed away. I believe it was '95.
Supposedly Kim wanted no part of Andam then.

I've seen all the filipinos play many times, except some of the younger ones. And this guy Orcullo is as impressive as Parica was in the 80's when he was the most feared money player in the world. As much as I like and respect Efren, Dennis has some intangible qualities that make me think he will become an all time great.

I can't really put my finger on it, but he has the WHOLE package. Ability, composure, heart, and discipline. And an unflappable attitude to boot. A pretty potent combination. And so much talent! When you watch him, he looks like he is doing the same things the other great players do. Except he does it a little better, a little more consistently, and with a little less effort.

I remember Jose in the 80's. It was clear that he was a little better player than anyone else. He just did everything a little better and a little easier. And he had a big break back then too. Of course, Jose had that killer in him too, that made him want to beat the other guy. Dennis has all this with a little better disposition. You actually like this guy (ala Efren) and want to pull for him.

And he has Rafael's ability to pull a shot out of the hat, when he needs to.
It's that in bred confidence that you rarely see. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish over here. Hopefully there will be many opportunities for him to play here. I'd like to go the U.S. Open just to sweat him.

The last game Dennis played against Oliver O. at the HT IPT qualifier was a thing of beauty. He manuevered the CB amongst a tight group of balls effortlessly. Dead on shape on every ball and never touched another ball. It would not be suprising to see him equal Efrens achievements--but he has many years to go and a lot of pool to play to do that. He is very confident and seems to be be unflappable. I watched him for 5 days and was very impressed. Efren is more impressive at rotation, at least the times I have watched him play that game, and of course at 1 Pocket. But there are a lot of years in age between them and only time will tell. One thing is for sure and that is that Dennis will not get sidetracked by golf as many American players seem to have done. He is focused!

I know why there's a problem. His name is spelled ORCOLLO in his passport and that's why there's this pronounciation question.

His name is actually spelled ORC-U-LLO. The spelling misprint happened when we went to get a Census certified copy of his birth certificate in order to get him a passport to go to Japan for the Tokyo 9-ball. We discovered the mispelled name but had to leave it be because we werere running out of time.

I don't think any player will reach Efren's ability unless they spend a few years playing three-cushion, balkline, and carambolista first. I have seen Orcullo, Pagulayan, and Manalo play live, and in 9-ball, they are all dead ringers, but I think Marlon might have the edge when it comes to how good one can play in dead punch. He is absoloutely unstoppable when he gets going. You don't white-wash two world-class Taiwanese star players 11-0, 11-0 in a row consecutively in their home town without being an absoloute juggernaut.

I also do believe that the Filipinos are the dominant pool players in the world right now. Just when Taiwan was starting to creep up, BAM we get hit with these relatively new powerhouses (Manalo and Orcullo).

describe his stroke

Great posts guys.

I definitely would like to get a glimpse of Dennis playing. For the people that have seen him play in person, how would you desribe his stroke?

I recall reading a post on here (maybe from Gerald?) that says Orcullo doesn't really possess a Filipino-looking stroke like Busta and Efren, but more of a "textbook" stroke like Manalo and Pagulayan.

JSP,

If you like, I can send you the short clip of Dennis and Danny playing in Reno. PM me your email address and I will send it out.

I agree with you. That's a pretty strong one-two punch right there. Throw in Alex and you might have three of the top five players in the world.

And there are three or four more young filipino champions that haven't even shown their faces in North America yet.
