The Real Fatboy

I worked out working on my Dad's ice truck. At 14 years old and 110 LBS I would hump 100 LBS blocks of ice and 50 LLB butter tubs of crushed ice and cubes into about 40 bars and eating places a day from 6 AM to about noon, 7 days a week.
Then we would jump in the coal truck and do that until 6PM.

Down our basement at home was a few tons of coal, scale, and 50 LB bags to fill. I earned $3 a day on the ice & coal route and a nickel a bag bagging the coal at night.

From 15 to 17 I weight lifted. I went to one meet with the Long Island Weightlifting Ass. and won the 122 LB class. 140 LBS Press, 165 Snatch LBS, and 218 LBS Clean & Jerk.
I can't see where any of it hurt or helped my pool game. Johnnyt

its 1pm, give me 2 hours and i'm gonna come back and start, its going to take me a day, i'm going to talk about what I did as a kid, lifting, and pool up to current time, with discussions about body building Vs gym training that wont hurt your pool game, roids, diet, cardio, all sorts of stuff layed out clearly, i just have some biz right now. I have been waiting to do this for a while, I'm gonna talk about my back too and my game in just the past year i have learned alot and want to share it.

nothing here is about bragging or feeling sorry for myself, its a great body of information from me, that I havent seen here before, the exercise fitness threads have been pretty weak-no pun. I'll lay out my credentials for that part and pool a well. then start, it might take a couple days for all of it, and some people will diagree(i even explian that).

let me go to work for a while,

I can't see how body building is ever from a purely physically angle going to help anyone play significantly better pool, unless just from the mental angle where if someone genuinely and strongly believes it helps, then it probably will, just like anything else you strongly believe works would to a degree help you mentally and as a result quite possibly make you stroke better.

I don't think the point is that body building will improve your game. The point is that regular exercise will. No matter what you feel about body building you're going to have more stamina, energy, etc... doing bodybuilding than you will sitting on the sofa every evening watching TV and stuffing your face with potato chips and beer. The big muscles are just a by-product of the exercise. I don't body build by any stretch of the imagination but I do workout regularly and try to keep exercise as part of my daily life. I'm overweight, no doubt about that, but I'm in better shape than a lot of people my age (40)

I know Fatboy's spelling is bad, but I usually can decipher his meaning. "Genitice" had me stumped. I googled it and from the results, I figure he meant genetics. I thought I would share that.

Obviously would fully agree with that in general, who wouldn't?:)

The big muscles are just a by-product of the exercise.

Surely at a reasonably competitive level of body building the shape of the body including the muscles cease to be by-products of the exercise and become specific objectives of focused training and diet wholly designed to achieve those muscles and that shape?

At that point any "fitness" involved probably becomes more of a by-product to the committed body builder than the muscles and shape were to the guy indulging in fairly simple gym exercise and weight training for general fitness purposes.

Maybe there's a definition difference over what you and I would consider to be "body building" as opposed to simply working out and doing fitness training in or out of a gym.

Well, I am happy with the body I've got, here I am sitting naked in front of the computer typing this. (See attached pic)

I am getting all the girls I want, and I can even make a ball or two at the pooltable. (If it's breaking well)

Gym is for retards and hillbilly's ;)

Ok, I'll agree with this one. There does come a point where "building" goes beyond what a normal exercise regimen will accomplish. But again, there are a lot of people that get their body fat down to a very low percentage that makes them really cut, yet they aren't exactly body builders.

But again, I think Fatboy's entire thought behind this thread is that exercise, whether it be a daily program to stay fit, bodybuilding, or cycling, whatever, is going to help with your game. Granted, no amount of exercise is going to make you make balls better, that's where your practice sessions come in, but being in shape will sure help you focus better and being in shape will allow you to stay at the table longer. But, I think Fatboy is using bodybuilding as that is his personal experience.

I remember back in high school I thought about working out once. Still to this day I think about working out. Does that count for anything?

I'm with you on this Bro. It's been on the drawing boards since I had a brain for thinking. ;)

Maybe Fatboy can really make me/you/both kick start this thing. :D

is there a point to all this bullshit:sorry: ? really

I've always wondered why people that have no interest in a thread feel the need to post in it? Why not just ignore it and move on to the next one?

Mully it sounds like you have the right idea here. I'm a little confused by this thread, because looking at the first picture posted Fatboy doesn't look anything like a body builder to me.

I'm looking forward to reading the information though! Should be a good read in one way or another. :)

Well, looking at that first photo, no, he wouldn't be winning any Arnold Awards, but you can tell that he definitely works out more than just getting some exercise.

Anyway, just my personal experience, I started getting into the weight loss/exercise thing just after my 39th birthday. I started with the Body For Life Challenge (www.bodyforlife.com). After the first month, following the program to the letter, my blood pressure, although not very high to begin with, dropped from 128/80 down to 104/68. I had tons of energy and was feeling like nothing could stop me. I honestly didn't play any pool that first month. I didn't even go to the pool room. But when I finally did get back to shooting pool I noticed a few things right off the bat. My break stroke was in tune like it never had been before. The cue felt right, my arms/legs/back were loose and my timing was unreal. On top of that I noticed that I wasn't tiring out as easily after a few hours of play and my back/shoulders weren't getting sore. I attributed everything coming from the exercise. I dropped off that regimen for a few months and things went back to the way they were.

There is no doubt in my mind that regular exercise, and I'm talking weight training and cardio training, will greatly improve your game.........in that your body and mind will be in better condition to put up with the rigors of what it takes to stay bent over a table for hours at a time.

I know a lot of people that say "But I don't have the time to do that." Well, I thought that way too but the reality of it is that I spend plenty of time watching TV. I only need to give up less than an hour a day to help take care of myself. If you really look at your day you'll find the time. The other argument is that "I'm tired after working all day and I just want to sit down" Well, it may suck at first but once you get adjusted to the program you'll find that you have more energy and aren't as tired after work as you used to be. The long and the short of it is this, if you want to get into shape there is no miracle cure. You have to decide to do it and make no excuses. Eat right and exercise. Don't waste your time with any gimmicky weight loss pills or junk like that. Eat right and exercise. Pretty simple concept. Hard to stick to, I know, but that's the only real way to get it done. People are always looking for a quick fix to losing weight. They also want to continue eating they way they do but still lose weight so they go for the diet pills, diet sodas etc.... Doesn't work.
that photo I posted of myself before, I weighed 375lbs there.
