The Rolls

Recently, I just couldn't get a "roll'.....ie, if I missed my intended target, or my leave, something bad was going to happen....the ball would take that extra half turn and ruin anything more than a kick.....going for a breakout, I'd end up surrounded with no shot, or it would skid off, kick some errand ball, and end up with a scratch......regardless of what happened, if I did not execute with exact skill, the miss was gonna hurt with almost no escape :grin-square:

I'm not complaining or blaming anyone, it was all myself.......and it happens....the balls just rolled that way.....any miss of leave or pocket was gonna cost me dearly....

And then I hit a turning point this weekend....playing 10-ball, I made an excellent shot on the 8, and even though position should not have been an issue, some unintended English hid me right behind the 10, no access to the 9 without kicking down table.....well, frustration had finally taken over, this was the last straw......I took about a half a second to aim down table, banked the cue at high pace.....it hit the 9 at rocket speed, then proceded to kick the 10 in the pocket......hell, I felt bad about it and I even apologized to my competitor....

From that point on, a switch just flipped....if I missed a leave, I automatically hooked my opponent (again, I'm a fan of two-way shots, but even when I didn't try).....balls that were rattling in the pockets would now rattle and fall.....a poorly executed shot would bound into another pocket (I never, ever get these rolls).....it was crazy....I didn't necessarily play much better, but I felt like luck was on my side.....still didn't win the tourney, but I felt like the pool gods decided it was my turn for a while

Interested to see if any of you have similar stories.....some type of turning point where you felt like your luck had turned, and even if for just a bit, it damn well did....

the thing you have to realize is this..the balls go where you hit them. if you let "the rolls" get in your head, especially the "bad" ones, then they seem to keep happening. whenever i feel like things are turning against me, i usually try and take a short break...like going to the restroom, washing my hands and trying to re-group and clear my head. just a thought.

Have we played? LOL.

It happens. Sometime everything just works. Other times you couldn't buy a roll at a discount bakery. Welcome to earth! LOL

It does seem that if I'm more relaxed and carefree that I get more " rolls". If I'm tense or upset, nothing seems to go my way. Maybe I'm controlling everything!

Texas Roadhouse Rolls are the nuts too!! LOL.

I played a guy last weekend that now owns a bakery! He's got ALL the rolls.

Hells, no. Texas Roadhouse FTMFW!!!

Oh yeah...as said above, the balls go where you hit them. Work on your kicking and position play. When you get to the point of being able to kick to a certain side of the ball, the "good rolls" will come your way. If you are playing "across the line" or "area" position, you are asking for "bad rolls".

no rolls

I made a decision long ago that there were no rolls except on the break or a really bad table. I have never felt like I was particularly lucky so this works well for me.

I have somehow aquired a new nickname. I was playing a partner game and getting the rolls. My good friend says "You're the luckiest white boy in America!" I guess there's worse things to be called, and whenever they call me that, I know I am in their head.

The "bad rolls attitude" affects your play, IMO. The more negative you are "I can't get a dam roll!", the worse you'll play, the looser your play gets the worse the rolls.

Ya gotta shake it off, and use the momentum swing of the rolls to your advantage. Patience and the laws of averages...

Hasn't pool been a game of your SKILL against your opponents LUCK?

If you continue to think in terms of LUCK in your game, then you will always have something to blame when you lose and take credit for when you win.

What part of the game do you control?

Tom, this isn't a blame the world or victim post....just having a little fun :grin-square:

I'm a big believer in taking responsibility for your actions, and I am always the first to blame myself......but I'm not gonna lie and tell you I don't believe luck plays a fun and sometimes small roll in games...

Like when a guy sinks a shot on the 9, doesn't pay attention to his leave, the cueball is heading right into the corner pocket.....and then it hits a piece of chalk and rolls off, doesn't scratch like it should have, and he takes the money.....

Saw a guy at the Bob Hope this weekend that hit his driver so far right, it landed across the water, hit a concrete drainage ditch, flew back across the water and into the middle of the fairway....

Or the pro baseball player that is waaay out in front of the pitch, corks it with the end of the bat, it lands in front of the third baseman, but the spin on the ball makes it kick weird and he ends up with a hit.....

Skill plays a huge roll.....and I've heard that luck is just the meeting of opportunity and preparation.....but to say it ain't there???

I like your thoughts on "rolls" and i've let them get to me in the past. I do my best these days to tell myself that I get good "rolls" also. I usually am on the losing end of the good rolls, but I played a 9 ball race to 9 match last week and I swear I believe I got every roll in the match. I actually felt sorry for my opponent. Every time he came to the table he was hooked if I didn't get out, but i've had many more matches where that's happened to me.

For me personally
Walking the balls from the counter to the table and back again, the rest is a crap shoot.

Big perm,
Here's to you getting more than your share of Lucky Rolls.

It is always better "to be good and lucky" than to just be one or the other.
