the semi-secret Qatar open 2023 (live link)

The only aspect to the MR break rules that make it any better (harder) is the random nature of the 2 ball in the rack. Even with that said, there's a couple of ways to pot that automatic 1b in the side with the 9 on the spot. I've been experimenting with what action should be placed on the CB specific to 2b location. Not sure if there's a secret sauce to be had, but tourneys in my area are all transition to the MR rules, so it's worth the effort.

The 1b on spot, wing ball pot and shape on the 1 in the corner is about as automatic as it comes. Little Ko was simply brilliant with that break a couple of years ago.
And he was equally adept at it in the Philippine Open.

whoa... hold on. I just skipped back into today's live feed, and happened across the explanation of the race length. Now I can't post a link with a timestamp included, but the commentator said when the Chang/Urban match was at 0-0:

"Now I have news for you... When it gets, because I wasn't too sure, because we were at hill-hill, it was 8 a piece, and then it went 9-8. It's race to 10 when it's hill-hill. ...and when it's 10 each, it's the toss of the coin."

Then he stops the explanation by pointing out some unknown player in the background.

Does that make sense to anyone...? It's a race to 9, unless you reach 8-8, and then the race 10, but if you somehow manage to both get to 10, then it's decided by a flip of a coin...? WTF...???
This all seems goofy to me. First one to nine or ten (whatever length the match is) should win. Nothing better than a hill-hill thriller!

Wasn't the US Open win by two for a while?
Correct, for one or two years in the 20 teens. Barry tried that out in the final three matches, which were all a Race to Eleven. If it went as far as 13-13, then it would revert to one final game. Good memory Robert!

For the finals it was race to 13, win by 2, cap at 15-15. But the finals never got that close, always with at a least a 3-game margin of victory at 13.

Some other unexpected 1st-round losses: Soufi, Souquet, Fortunski. And Souquet went 2-and-out, losing to a 19-year old compatriot in his second match!

yuma dörner has a high ceiling, i'm sure we'll hear more about him in a couple of years

Thank you for clarifying this. I wasn't sure when I posted it, just remembering there was a cap on how far it would go.

A few other youngsters in this tournament,

I felt that there should be no limit on the ‘win by two’….if the duration of the finals got into the twenties, a legend would be born…..and I like the idea of ‘win by two’.

And then there are the people who play 10-ahead one pocket matches. o_O

Starting from 15-15 and evenly matched players and the simplest possible model, the chance of a 22-20 final result is about 6%. And about 6% to go longer than that.

Haha! A bit of hyperbole.

I was just watching this old match from Accustats.

Dalton- had a very odd way of breaking back then.

Watch at the 20:35 mark

Wow, Filler got beat bad, 9-4, by a guy named Sami Koylu? (there are two guys in the bracket named Sami). Good for Tyler beating Duong, he is one tough customer!

BTW, anyone have updated brackets? A lot of my fellow Dominican players are claiming that Raulito Diaz, considered to be the top Dominican player on the island, made his overseas debut and beat Mohammad Soufi in his match. But I cannot find any results.
