I though I would put a thread together about commissioning a cue with Pete Tonkin... from start to finish.

I had a blast commissioning this cue with Pete. Our discussions started at the ICCS show in St. Louis last year. We worked through the design process together with pete send me CAD drawings of the designs. Below is the first design we came up with after several phone calls and hours discussing the final design:

We decided to take the ring work in a different direction, modify the barbells, and ad inlays into the boxes. The colors of the CAD drawings are for effect only and do not represent the colors and materials we were going to use. Below is the final design we decided on:

Inlays were going to be ivory borders and abalone. At the last minute we decided on ivory borders and silver, with abalone only in the center diamond of the barbells and the center dots of the main inlay pattern. That turned out to be a very good decision.

Here are the first pics Pete sent to me with only the "Chevrons (as Pete calls them) inlaid into the butt sleeve and Forearm:

Next, Pete sent me pictures of the Boxes and points:

Next came time for the inlays... all 230+ of them. Pete sent me the following pics:

As you can see, there are no barbells below the Chevrons in the points. We originally did not think the cue would need them, but decided to add them at the last minute. Another good suggestion by Pete and a good decision... it really pulled the design together.

continued in next post...

So here is my new Pete Tonkin cue which is named "Chevron". This cue has 12 of them, so it was thusly named.

Pete was such a pleasure to work with on this cue. He is truly a pro and a fine craftsman. He has a great eye for design and the flow of a cue. This was a fun project to say the least. And the best part is... the cue plays absolutely lights out. With all the silver, and being a wrapless ebony on ebony, the cue only weighs 19.2oz and has great balance.

If you are considering an order with Pete, I would suggest you do it fast... I have a suspicion his list will be getting longer and longer.

Ebony chevron cue

Very unique & compelling design into ebony. Finding word(s) to describe how this cue affects me is most difficult. What a great attention grabber!!!! All of the Inlays designs work well together & apart . Exceptional design & build work. Congrats!!, Paul.

speechless

wow, now that is the BEST Tonkin I have seen and wrapless too. What I really like is the ringwork in the handle as it is in the same size as the others and hold the flow very nice, not same as the other Tonkin Cues before.
congrats to you and Pete.

Very nice cue, congrats both to you and to Pete that did a great job!

Nice balanced look to it, not my colors but It´s a very nice mix of colors that goes very well together, the inlays, miters etc are great!

There is a very good reason Pete continues to win awards. He creates a new reason every time a cue is done.

Can't think of any new compliments to add. Just one thing comes to mind....

tap, tap, tap
