I though I would put a thread together about commissioning a cue with Pete Tonkin... from start to finish.
I had a blast commissioning this cue with Pete. Our discussions started at the ICCS show in St. Louis last year. We worked through the design process together with pete send me CAD drawings of the designs. Below is the first design we came up with after several phone calls and hours discussing the final design:
We decided to take the ring work in a different direction, modify the barbells, and ad inlays into the boxes. The colors of the CAD drawings are for effect only and do not represent the colors and materials we were going to use. Below is the final design we decided on:
Inlays were going to be ivory borders and abalone. At the last minute we decided on ivory borders and silver, with abalone only in the center diamond of the barbells and the center dots of the main inlay pattern. That turned out to be a very good decision.
Here are the first pics Pete sent to me with only the "Chevrons (as Pete calls them) inlaid into the butt sleeve and Forearm:
Next, Pete sent me pictures of the Boxes and points:
Next came time for the inlays... all 230+ of them. Pete sent me the following pics:
As you can see, there are no barbells below the Chevrons in the points. We originally did not think the cue would need them, but decided to add them at the last minute. Another good suggestion by Pete and a good decision... it really pulled the design together.
