I have been trying to find a copy of Winning One Pocket to read for quite a while now, and had given up on reading it without having to pay more than I can afford for it. Started exploring libraries 2 weeks ago, and found a library in NJ that had a copy available. Just confirmed that my local library has it on its way to me...:D :D :D

I just saved money on my car insurance.

Yeah.. I really doubt more than 1 or 2 people will ever even pick up that book in the next year.

You should "lose" it, and then the library will either charge you the $50 cost of the book, or the cost to replace it with another book, or suggest you buy a pool book to replace it with.

That book should permanently be in the hands of someone who is a One Pocket enthusiast. I don't think anyone on this board would fault you for doing whatever you have to do to keep that book.

Good find, man..

i use my local library too..if they don't have it they can most likely order it out of another library...

I have both books, Winning One Pocket and Shots, Moves, and Strategies. The Shots, Moves, and Strategies is signed by Jersey Red. Did they stop the print on these books? By reading the post, looks like they are hard to get a hold of.

Have any idea how long that would take???????? But yeah, they really are great books. Funny how I got the signed copy. I had brought the Shots, Moves, and stratagies to the counter, and the guy told me, "hey, I think on of them is signed by Jersey Red" I didn't know much about Jersey Red at that time, but I figured he must have been a great player to have signed the book, plus, he might know a little bit about One Pocket....lol So I go over to the wall, look through them, and sure enough, one was signed "Best Wishes,.....Jersey Red" So I bought that one, for the same price as the un-signed copy, which was 40 bucks. What a deal! :D

They have been out of print for some time. You can find them on eBay for between $100 and $300. I have some extra copies, but only for trade.

Not to sound like a smart ass, but these books were written some tim ago right?, so, would the info in them fit into todays more high powered 1P game? I play a more "Scott Frost" style of 1P. Would I be wasting my $$ on these books?

thanx,

I think there's a lot of good info in them. Most of the diagrams, IIRC, have a lot of offense. You often get to see the different approaches and reasons of several top players. As to whether they are worth about $100 each, I guess that depends. There is a resale market until they are reprinted.

RIGHT.... They might have been donated by someone who wants to SHARE the book.

Considering that One Pocket is by-and-large a game that is played by only pretty good players, and that in your average medium-sized city, you might have only 10-15 One Pocket players, and only about 30-40 in a BIG city, HOW OFTEN do you think that book is gonna get checked out? I mean, considering ALL THE TIME your average pool player spends in the public library?????

A lot of books end up being put up for sale in public libraries anyway, if they don't get checked out regularly. I personally think if the book hasn't been checked out more than twice in the past year, the library, and pool in general, would be better served by replacing the book with something like Byrnes Standard Guide to Pool and Billiards. JMHO, because THAT book will actually have a chance of making a new convert to the game.

Now, by all means, if the book gets checked out regularly, then leave it in the library. But considering the narrow audience of the book, I HIGHLY DOUBT that is the case. :D

Personally, Bob, I think they are completely worth the prices they are going for. The shots go from "ho-hum" to insanely aggressive.
