There Are No 8 Ball "Rules"

Remember if your opponent tries to pull a rule change on you in the middle of a game:

Thank him politely and then nicely inform him that the next turn (change) is yours. The last move is the best.

Another way, say if a rule comes up that both players did not decide before they started, then flip a coin to see who creates the first new rule/then your opponent, like Randy says gets to declare the next rule implementation.

I think you're missing the whole point of bar-room eight ball. It is not mostly a pool game -- it is an exercise in interacting with others. How do you gently negotiate rules when you are among angry strangers? How do you deal with cheating when you know they're cheating, they know they're cheating, and they know that you know they're cheating? What do you do if someone on the side demands to bet with you? Are you able to maintain a clear path to leave the area if necessary? Each of these facets can be far more exciting and interesting than just playing the game.

Start developing your interpersonal skills.

You hit the nail on the head. Nothing more exciting than to walk into a busy,
strange bar and put your quarter on the table knowing that your first, competitive act will be defending your place in line. And for crissake don't play obvious safes!

A book should be written on how to be a good ,"Two-bit hustler," in bars.

Bob,you yourself pointed out the "fluid" rules in 8 ball throughout history more than a decade ago. I don't need to "develope" my interpersonal skillis. Cheating is cheating. Rules change everywhere you go...it's a punk ass game.

This is why I never play anoyone that is intoxicated. I probably don't really play anyone "for fun" unless i'm out with a bunch of friends that don't normally shoot. With friends, i'm not gambling or playing competitive, so i don't really care about the rules.

If someone wants to play for some change, they either agree to BCA or APA rules. If you don't know the rules, i'm not playing. Pretty simple.

It's crazy, the most popular game in billiards and there are no standardized rules? It changes everywhere you go. No 3 foul rule, why?

One place it's "behind the line" on fouls, which sucks, because you can deliberately foul and put the squeeze on at times. Foul on all balls. As far as I know, foul on all balls only applies when there is an official referee calling the match? Otherwise the "offending" party points at where the ball was and asks his/her opponent where he/she want's the ball?

I don't even like playing it anymore.

don't be like that man. 8 ball is a great game!!!!! especially on the bar box. if your playing it you just have to make sure that the rules you're going to be using get determined before the game starts.

remember you're playing by the same rules they are no matter what. the table and the rules play the same for all of us. and if you play well enough little things like that shouldn't be what make the difference anyway. if it is you're just not playing well enough yet

Bar rules are challenging. I think they are actually good practice. Not only that, there are no consequences for fouls (except the 8 ball). I usually try and play straight up and don't play obvious safeties, but if someone pulls a move on me, they're in for a world of torture.

Understanding the difference between World Standardized Rules and bar rules allow you to take advantage of bar rules if you have to.

Why does it bother you that rules change over the course of time? Equipment changes, rules change. The only difference is whether you remember the last major rule change. If the last monstrous alteration to the game happened before you were alive, then you think of the rules you grew up playing as the permanent rules. It's an illusion.

True, cheating is cheating. Is their cheating more important than your good time playing, and can you beat them if they still cheat? Now it's a challenge. They cheat, you lose, you walk away. Or you stab them. If they cheat and you win, cool. You probably had to play a better game to get around them. I always tell people, especially playing 8 ball and talking about fouls, "if you're not embarassed to claim the shot, keep shooting." That pretty much solves all the issues of call shot, call pocket, slop the 8, etc. If you're going to foul and bump your way to running out the table, I don't want to play with you anyway. If you're cheating and you still fail to run out, I'm going to put a boatload of effort into getting you off my table.

If it's a punk ass game, it must be easy, then.

Any game where you can win with a 3 foul is a punk ass, ***** ass game :D

If ya wanna win any game, break, make all the balls, and then collect the cash......if you want to bounce balls around without hitting a pocket, I suggest you make out with a tease for a few hours.....you'll never get to hit the pocket, and your balls will turn blue :frown:

Actually, there are still a few tables around without pockets, play on one of those and stop taking up tables with pockets......there are those of us that want to make use of them.....
