Think I'm Done

I really don't know why I'm writing this maybe to vent or find out if I'm the only one out there that has thought about throwing in the towel. With the exception of showing a lower level or beginning player which is rewarding in and of itself. I think I'm done match playing. I have watched how the WANT to win is so bad that there are people out there willing to do WHATEVER it takes to achieve the win. It takes the joy out of what I love and though I'm usually Zen I find myself wanting to open a box of kick a$$ . And I'm not talking about pool. Different sport . Sorry for the rant. Hope not to offend but if there are those that fit this profile out there that read this maybe it will enlighten...just in case you start to care. Hope they remember why they started to play this game.

If you're referring to sportsmanship, or rather, bad sportsmanship, which I think you are, then I can relate. I've found myself several times over the past few years being in a place where you are now. If winning isn't a number one priority to you, but rather the love of the game and being fair and respectful to it and your competitors, I'd hope you stick with it. Because it's people like that who make this game worth playing, IMO. Hopefully there are others who would follow your example. Lead by example kinda thing.

There's one thing being a pool player will do is thicken your skin up. After playing for almost 30 years I don't let anything effect me. I've seen some bad eggs come my way, you just have to keep a list of who they are and shun them and never let them get to you.

Interesting

Falcon Eddie, I would encourage you to throw in the towel. Throw it into the laundry bin, wash it up,and then repectfully fold it,and store it on a shelf for a while. I understand how you are feeling. I have also had periods of my life where pool became a "vacationing" activity. That means I put my cue away, and found other activities to occupy my free time. Since I wasn't a professional player, nor a devout league player, pool was my recreation. I felt comfortable taking a break. It helped me understand where I was in the pool universe. What is important, and what is not. It is like casting a rod and reel, you never forget how to do it,and you can always come back to it. When I returned to playing, I would go out, rent a table, practice by myself, and respectfully refuse when people would come up and offer to "hit some around". There is no rule that says a pool player must compete with others. I have enjoyed as much solitude on the table as I have on a quiet lake in the early morning. You are expressing something virtually everyone has at one time or another, not just in pool, but in life itself. When you play, enjoy it to your expectations, not someone elses. You asked a good question and I apologize if I ramble a bit in my reply.

Take a small vacation from pool playing.
Just give your mind, body, and spirit some time to get back into sync with the world around you, and before you know it you'll be back running racks like a crazy person again. Now go get 'em ya big lug. :)

Gamblers do whatever it takes to win (sharking, playing slow, lying, etc.). You'll find these guys playing poker or betting on race horses too.

Players play their best in an effort to win. You'll find these guys looking for ways to hone their skills to get better.

Different breed of people.

What's the story anyway eddie? What sport?

Wait, are you saying you wanna quit pool over something that happened in a different sport, or quit that sport?

I quit playing in the seventies... after I graduated. The money had dried up & just about everyone was a hustler or worse. I was financing my living expenses with my Pool game. I had finally completed school & was tired of the dopers & what it brought to the game.

Over the years I did make some good friends, still visit with a lot of them.

I started playing again in 1999 & it didn't take long to get going. There was a boatload of instructional material to help me jumpstart my game. I retired in 1998 & Pool has become a big part of my life. I would like to see the game evolve into a real Professional Sport.

who is this guy?

I know a lot of players that take a break for a bit. Myself included. I suggest taking a small break and then return when the argue to play is heavy. If you got bit by the bug (which im sure you have) you will never completely let go of the game.

When people start acting like that with me I assume they see me as a better player and have to resort to that stuff to win. Seeing them as inferior makes it easy for me to deal with. If I happen to occasionally lose to one of them I use it as motivation to practice harder. However if you are unable to fade that stuff then you are probably doing the right thing in quitting.

No CreeDo I was talking about pool but because this guy was doing everything imaginable to disrupt me ...I felt like just boxing his ears off that's the different sport which I was referring.

No I won't . There really is no quit in me. I'm just going to refuse to play this guy. And if I come across another like him I'll just take that break...

That went badly but it sounds like you didn't lose to him. That woulda really ate you up I bet. So it coulda been worse. Keep your head up, there's plenty of good action out there.

I used to play cheap sets and sometimes "just hit around" with a guy like that a few times a week. He was a bit of a mark for me but it was always extremely annoying to be over there in the corner playing with this guy for an extended period of time and having to listen to all his bs and deal with his antics. To hell with that. I am way happier playing someone "normal and semi-respectful" or hitting by myself. Truth be told I can't stand being around this guy anymore playing or not.

Just have to figure out what is more important to you. I quit team pool because I had trouble getting some free time. Then I went to seeking out buddies to play on Friday night. That was the best thing Ive ever done. No tournament Ive ever been to can top that. You play some good pool and you go home and rest. Thats good stuff. When it comes to the money. One thing saves you with a hotshot. Post Up!Pay after every game or lets just play. aimisthegameinpool@yahoo.com

Took the words right out of my mouth...
