If you are interested in seeing this very cue come together, vist the thread title in this Cue Gallery "The Emergence of a Custom Cue".

Bob Owen went out of his way to accommodate my every whim & he also made the protector set for this new cue that ships next week.

Thank You Martin (Jazznpool) for providing a wonderful wrap for my cue....still kinda wish it was #12 but this style works just fine.

Thank you to all the cue-makers that created pool cues over the decades that inspire one to design your own pool cue.

Lastly, Mr. Owen, I do hope to meet you in person to express my appreciation for all your patience, indulgence of my ideas & for making this come to life.

The wait is almost over and after this cue arrives, it fills the last remaining spot in my 6x12 case.

I wasn't sure how the gray wrap was going to look but it turned out great!

Thanks.....I was a little uncertain about using it. Take a close close gander at the protectors.
I asked Bob to make something that would be matching and I was thinking he'd use veneer colors.
So he goes way, way beyond by using matching rings which intimidated me to even inquire about.

There are 16 ivory and 16 abalone inlays in every ring & there are 6 rings ( 4 for the cue & 2 shaft rings).
That's a lot but then he also makes matching protector set rings. Bob has to have the patience of Jobe
because IMO, there's a lot of tedious cue-making hours to undertake this design......He did a A+++ job.

It has to sound odd to read this post but I can't stop breaking into a enormous grin when I view these photos.

And it arrives 5 weeks before the CA ivory ban takes effect & this cue is just laden with ivory, even the butt cap.

matt
you got a really pretty cue
i hope you enjoy it for a long time

bob owen is really great, isn't he?

Dean,

I really couldn't say whether Bob or Jerry was the nicest, kindest, most accommodating cue-maker.
Each has just done amazing cue-making and both are men of integrity and preach customer service.
This is my 2nd cue from Bob and Jerry has me two dandies as well. The cue Jerry just completed is
everything I hoped for & this one from Bob is exactly what I had in mind when I sketched this design.

Thanks for the fortuitous introductions to two guys that I have come to consider as my very close pals.....
that I just happen to be merrily giving my money to, or at least that's true up until the end this June.

Nice cue! What was the overall build time on this project???

Original Outlook was 14.....Completed in 12 Due to CA Ivory Ban

You ask a darn good question.

I ordered the cue last May 2015 and the outlook was 14 months to tackle this design. Then in December, Governor Jerry Brown signed the CA Ivory Ban into law effective July 1, 2016.

Well, that conflicted with the completion because any cues sold and arriving after 6/30/16 are illegal. Now I know some might say how would they catch you and the legal staff of my local Assemblyman Jim Patterson explained how your cue can get detected by busting someone else. Ivory is already being strictly regulated nationwide and as such, you can get caught even years afterwards through what's referred to as an audit discovery. A seller(s) of of legal pre-1978 ivory get audited and in turn cue-makers can get audited and in turn sales records get reviewed. That's how they can catch you besides just someone opening & inspecting your shipping carton.

Personally, it wasn't worth the risk because the fines are enormous for the cue buyer and for the cue-maker much larger fines plus confinement time can be levied at the buyer & cue-maker. So I had two cues underway from last year and I had to ask both cue-makers to move up their completion timetables. One cue arrived 10 days ago and this cue arrives next week. However, the amount of ivory in this one is much more than any other cue I own. Everything white on this cue or joint protectors is ivory and the other inlay is Pau Lau Abalone. Thank goodness it's not also on some banned list. The wrap is deluxe elephant from Jazznpool and he was the only supplier I cold locate that had this quality and color.

Bob had to change his scheduling to accelerate completing this cue since it was going to originally arrive after enactment of the ivory ban. There's so much ivory in this pool cue, I didn't even have to ask Bob if he could accommodate getting this done. Once the specific actual deadline was established, which wasn't until end of 2015 when the law was passed, Bob basically said "It looks like I need to get my rear in gear since there is still a lot to get done before the ban starts." I never again questioned Bob about the deadline and he kept me apprised of his progress regularly as you can see from the photos in my other thread, "The Emergence of a Custom Cue". I know he worked very hard to get it done in time......that's a lot of ivory stitches and the Pau Lau was just as demanding. Jim Baxter observed how well the protectors turned out and he sure should know and that's also ivory & Pau Lau in the protectors.

So all in all, this design was a little tougher to tackle than most average cue designs and like I wrote earlier, I have zero complaints how it turned out. Bob said visitors to his shop inquired if they could buy my cue asking is this one available? He'd smile and say "Nope, it's going to a crazy SOB in CA." Okay, Bob really didn't say that but I could easily understand if he felt that way after tackling the ring design. The original outlook was 14 months from start to finish but he was able to finish in 12 months because of the ivory ban deadline being just around the corner.

The Eagle Has Landed......USPS Delivery in <24 Hrs.

Mr. Owen surrendered my cue to the local post office in Wichita, Ks. yesterday (5/23) just before noontime.

My new cue arrived today (5/24) at 10:30 am in Fresno, CA........USPS Next Day 24 Delivery.

Martin....boy you were sure right about the deluxe EE wrap......I'm on record via my posts
on the Forum that I dislike the EE wrap on my Prewitt cue......feels like Golf Pride grips.

The EE wrap you selected for my cue is outstanding. I love the way the wrap feels and the gray color
looks fabulous. It really adorns the cue design in a low key fashion but it still stands out and the feel of
the texture is great.....Thank you so much.

Bob.....the design is better than I hoped for. I never imagined it would come to life so vividly and you made
it happen......thank you, especially for the outrageous protector set you produced. I ask you to create a design
that was different and you came through with an amazing design.

This cue is seductive.....when you see it in person, you are lured into examining it so you can appreciate the
rings and colors.....the Royal purple is glorious.....Yahoo, I avoided messing this design up like the first cue
that I tweaked a little too much.

Both my Jerry R. cue and this one arrived well in advance of the stupid ivory ban and are safely tucked away in my cue case.

I'm sure they'll be skeptics about USPS so here's the label and my cue. I just wish I could order another one but the stupid ban gets in the way.
In any event, I am going to keep campaigning through my Assemblyman to get the ivory ban modified but in the meantime, my cue collecting is on hold.

Matt B.

p.s. My address is clearly on the label which I left intentionally untouched. It makes it easy for any of my naysayers on the Forum to harass me any time they're so inclined.

Would love to see a shot of the whole cue outside if you get the chance!

At first I wasn't sure about that grey wrap, but seeing the shot of the whole cue, even if it's a little dark, I think I'm really liking it actually! Surprised me. Really a nice look cue, love those rings especially!
