This Spot Reserved - Attic Find

Trade you sight unseen for 3 Wheats, two pack of Kamui chalk and slightly deformed boa.

Deal????

Scott

Define "slightly deformed."

We might be on to something, here!!! ;)

Confirmed with my wife that the case/mystery cue has been set aside for me. Now all I gotta do is wait until they go back down there to clean up a bit more...and they'll grab it and bring it to me.

I keep telling myself it's nothing...but the anticipation is killing me. :D

Ok guys let's look a little closer
1 The older gent who passed away fancied Himself a player.
2 As the story goes got into game after ww2 ended let's say mid 1945
Boy if it's a cue from that era could be pretty nice surprise.
Some great cues were floating around at that time.
Great story, best of luck.

You're building a case for my Rambow guess

At the SBX this year I met a guy who had a old cue. He asked if I had any experience
With vintage cues. My response was not much but I can introduce you to
Mark Kulungian of Classic cues.
Ps.
We get together with Mark but could not determine on the spot weather it was a
H. Rambow
What a beautiful piece of work. And it was in amazing condition for a cue of that era
You are fortunate to own one.

Back to the mystery cue. Could also be a Harvey Martin, Rich, Brunzwick,
Or as the gent who played for many years may have purchased something
amazing at any time.
IMO this is why this is a great thread.
A story with a mystery.

Also, if the cue has a Balance Rite extension we will know he was ahead of his time.
You never know><

You guys with your guesses of Rambow, Martin, and the like.....are NOT helping me maintain my sanity, here!!!!!

:grin-square:

The 'plan,' as it were = They are going down to the house for more clean up and clean out during the week of 14-18 April. My wife's friend has PROMISED to not forget about the cue. I'll remind her, anyway. ;)

Only other tidbit of info is that grandma says that grandpa...to the best of her recollection...only had the one cue. He loved that cue, and grandma does not remember him ever having more than just the one. Grandma doesn't have any recollection of what it looked like, what kind of case he had, or where he got it....so all that will remain UNKNOWN for another week or two.

DAMMIT!!!!!

Clearly (to me), he loved to play the game...and had the control of a saint to not run out and buy a dozen cues at once (like a good chunk of us cue nuts on AZB).

Or did he....and they just haven't found them all yet.....?????

Could you ask Grandma or your wifes friend to take some pics?
Also, it would be interesting to see a photo of Herman Rambow holding the cue, and some detailed pics of the rubber bumper system.

Grandma is living with the granddaughter now. She's not in the house at all, anymore.

Unfortunately, the house is a little bit of a drive away from where we all currently live, and they only go down there when they have spare time. Spring break week, I think, will be the earliest anyone will crack open the doors again.

Honestly...I don't want them to sneak another peak at the cue. I want 'em to save the anticipation (and craziness) for me.

Even if it turns out to be a broom handle with a piece of leather glued on one end...I'll snap some photos for ya'll and fill you in.

FYI - This wouldn't be the first time, though, that I've turned out to be a major disappointment. My better half can attest to that!!!

Hi 8-ball rat,

There won't be any disappointments at all, only win-win. In your "worst case" you will be receiving a personal cue owned for decades by a guy who loved our dear game, and was likely a decent player.

I own a few cues, but have to be perfectly honest and say that I have several that were beloved by someone as their weapon for extended periods of time, some for decades, and these are the ones I find truly "special" and sentimental. Although not valuable at all, I occasionally place them on display with some of my "big boys". And I genuinely enjoy viewing them knowing that the old-timer would get a real kick knowing where his cue ended up. And so do I. Kind of a form of paying it backward, so to speak. A type of honor I take seriously. Not meaning to be trite, just completely honest.

A couple of years ago, I was back visiting friends in the area where I grew up, and while there was contacted by a lifelong friend who knew I have a couple cues. A mutual dear friend of ours had passed on about 3-4 years earlier, and his widow wanted to sell his cue to help pay bills. We went to visit, and sure enough, there was my friend's beloved 2-piece warrior Willie Hoppe that he cleaned up by removing the "stupid" decal, etc. It would scare you how much I overpaid for that cue, and it is now one of my prized possessions. And my wife is well aware of where that cue is to go next.....as I said, special.

I type slower on my iPad than on my computer, so I will pull up. But all kidding aside, I hope I typed enough to convey my honest thoughts about some of the early player cues. Great fun, and to be due great respect.

Good luck with your win-win cue! :).

Will Prout

..p.s., After I typed this, I just went over to my cue area and placed my old friend's Willie Hoppe between my biggest Gus and my biggest Ginacue.......made my day. Take care, and enjoy your next cue.....

No updates, yet. Everyone got wrapped around life's axle...and the family hasn't made it back down to the house to grab some things (cue, included). I'm just standing by, hoping it happens soon.

I bet he got the cue and sold if for $20,000 and is now cruising around the world for a much needed vacation.

That would be way more awesome than my current reality! :)

First thing I'm gonna check for s a rolled up Balabushka business card under the bumper. If I find it, I'll be on that vacation you speak of in no time flat!!!!! :-D

Still waiting for pics captain.

You and me, both!!! The family told me theyd be headed down to get it over spring break...but that didnt happen. As of today, it still sits in the house. Under the circumstances, I wont push the issue...but I AM anxious to see whats what.

I promise...pics will come once I receive it. I still dont think it will be anything of monetary value...but regardless, im excited to get it. The story, alone, is cool as hell to me.
