Thoughts on an extended custom cue

So I've noticed some people getting into the idea of playing with longer cues. I know players who are playing with an extension permanently screwed onto their cue. And I've tried it, and it is nice having the extra reach there, but the balance and weight is uncomfortable for me.

So I'm thinking, what about a custom made cue that is longer and weighted/balanced well... would that be possible? Just a 2 piece, with no extra extension piece, but a permanently longer cue.

I think I could get used to that.
Any thoughts?

There are several ways to skin this cat. It is a matter of personal preference I think.

I have been using a 29 inch butt with 31 inch shafts. It's an old 1980-ish Huebler and they are original 31 inch Huebler shafts (very rare I am told). I love the setup. Really love it.

I dig it so much that I am considering having 31 inch shafts made for my old Joss.

Have you considered trying a longer shaft?

I have not tried any extension of any sort by the way, so I really cannot compare that with my longer shaft setup.

Frankly, I am surprised to see that nobody is really marketing longer shafts in the aftermarket or as an option. But you can easily order one from multiple makers and suppliers.

How long do you want ?

Swamped right now , but I can make you one 45 days.

I have 4 long cues

I have 3 Pat Diviney cues that are 61" long. They have 3 of his 30" Lake Salvage Shafts and 31" butts. All 3 cues come in at about 19 oz. with no weight bolts.

All shaft joints match up with the 3 butt joints and feature stainless radial pins. I also had Pat make me up a 8" extension that screws into the butt of the 2 players.

I still use a bridge when needed on a 9' table, but not on a bar box, but when ever possible I put the extension on as I shoot better with it then with the bridge.

Pat Diviney is an honest craftsman and a pleasure to deal with.

I had Meucci make me up a very plain 62" sneaky cue also.

Seybert's has a case for longer cues.

I am a long armed 6' 3" guy and the long cues work for me.

When I got my Zamboti in 1978 I ordered it 1976/ with 3 shafts, and because of my height/6'6'' everyone told me I'd like it. Weeeeeeeeeell JIC it did NOT like it, I ordered all 3 shafts 2'' longer. I hated it....but doing that it gave me the ability to have all 3 shafts cut shorter/reused and I liked it. By no means did I want to pay for 3 new shafts and since they were from Gus, I also thought I would not be able to get as good of shafts as he gave me. Leather wrap, 4 point/ebony with ivory ferrules, cost $260 new....had to wait 2 years for it, was worth it.

I've been playing with 60" cues for a decade or so and would not want to go back. Mark Wilson suggested it to me when I took some lessons from him. It definitely helps maintain proper mechanics!

All extensions alter the balance either forward or back and add the weight of another joint.

I will never go back to a shorter cue, with my hand behind the wrap or on the butt cap.

Here is my 62 inch'er custom made to my specs by Schmelke:

If you are so tall or your wingspan is long that you have to hold the cue at the butt sleeve or butt cap, you don't need a wrap.

I've never understood why people who fit the sentence above buy custom cues with expensive wraps...or even a wrap at all.

The wrap is made to hold while shooting, not for decoration.

To be fair, the wrap can be a component of decoration if the owner likes. To a point it is so for most I would say. Don't we choose the color? Or at least have a preference? I often see comments in the gallery like "That cue would look great with a (insert preference) wrap.

But I do believe a wrap is first and foremost functional.

I have a harder time understanding how the cue sports went so long without cue lengths being more tailored to the player.

I ALWAYS get wraps on my cues because it gives me a better grip and almost every place I have ever played had lousy air conditioning which makes for sweaty hands.

I have cues with different color wraps, but my preferences has always been white with green speck. Almost every cue I have is old-school made or old-school styled.

I prefer the old school as well.

And for me, nothing is better than linen for functionality.

But I am considering elephant for one of my cues. Why? It has a bunch of ivory in it. And I keep it in an Engles elephant skin case. Really, for that cue, it would just be a style thing. But it is not my primary player.

Pretty amazing that Willie Hoppe preferred a 55 inch cue. On a 5 by 10 table. Carom, that is...

Things evolve.

I once posted asking what the characteristics are of cues for different games.

Didn't get much response as I remember.

There is the player to consider. His preference and stature. Then there is the game and the table dimensions.

I do not believe one size fits all

I have preferred cues for:
8 ball
9 ball
Carol
1 hole
More....

They are different.

For example my 1 hole cue is a light 58 inch cue with soft tips. It's a Dayton.

But if I played 1 hole on a bigger table I might want a longer cue. Never did so I am not sure.

Carom games are also played more upright. The closer the head is to the cue the more length is needed for a textbook stroke.

What is the difference between 8 ball and 9 ball when it comes to cues if you are playing on the same size table?

Should have gotten 10......lol

Here is drawing that one can use to develop the length for a custom cue or an extended custom cue.

The drawing is based on ergonomics

It's a simulation for your use, if you choose to use it. There's no neck either.
