Thread Titles

I would like to suggest that some people could be more descriptive about the topic of their new threads. When typing in the title, please try to be descriptive. Titles like "impressed" and "question" are not very helpful.

For example, let's say I want to know what people are saying about Kamui chalk. I would use the Advanced Search and type in the key words "Kamui" and "chalk". I would then select the choice of "Search Titles Only". Using "Search Entire Posts" would create too many erroneous results. But if people are not typing in descriptive titles, then the topic may not be "found" using "Search Titles Only", limiting this feature's usefulness.

note: the Kamui chalk thing is just an example.

Thank you.

Also useful for skimming thread titles for topics that interest you (and for maximizing views of your own thread). I'll skip non-descriptive titles.

Thanks for bringing this up - I've wanted to many times but you beat me to it. It's a good candidate for the AzB FAQ & Helpful Posting Tips sticky that I'm sure is being planned by the mods as we type. :)

Hell, we wouldn't need thread titles if everyone just used search.

Because instead of posting about kamui chalk and putting it in the title... our theoretical newbie would search, find out kamui chalk has been discussed TO COMPLETE AND TOTAL DEATH, then simply not post because he's gotten every question answered he could possibly have about kamui :P

I'm not missing your point, but I think you might be missing mine because the search feature doesn't filter much if you are not searching titles only. If you search the entire posts for "Kamui chalk" you will get results such as...

"I just tried the Kamui black hard tip and I like it very much. It holds chalk well..."

I wish you woulda put 'daily *****:' in your title.

And then you used google advanced search. There's even a thread about that. The forum search engine isn't cutting edge.

I'm not ******** about the search engine.

I'm ******** about titles like "cues for sale", which doesn't just affect searching. I didn't make the point in my original post, but the point has been made by others in this thread since then. Titles like this make browsing the forum's new topics annoying as well.

If you don't like my post fine. No need to be snide about it though. I'm talking about your modifications to the quote. Un-called for.

Good point. I'm not sure how descriptive my titles have been in the past but I will make every effort to do better in the future. I never gave it this much thought. Thanks for pointing this out.

You ARE on the rag today! :point-laugh:

Not intended as mean...was just pointing out that we all have our imperfect moments.

Not that they shouldn't be made fun of.

I have had very little success using the search feature, but I will also admit that my searching techniques are no doubt flawed.
Besides, isn't it much more fun to have something to talk about?

On the same topic...

Thread titles that might read as "So and so are playing now...." on a stream...

Just a helpfull tidbit would be to put when "now" is.

Freddie <~~~ just posted this message... now

Yes, in fact I wish more online articles would put a date on their stuff. It's always good to know when tomorrow, today or yesterday actually is!

...you don't want to be specific because that will limit your traffic to just those interested in that specific issue or topic...

I will almost always skip over threads that have vague topic titles. Someone else said the same thing earlier in this thread. Don't know if I'm in the minority or majority on that tho.

Interesting thread; I think you might be thinking that people should be or want to be thoughtful, organized, thorough and attentive to what they are doing. I am; but I am about 50% of the population. From my experience you can't get the other half to do this.

One big drawback in getting too descriptive and specific in the title is that you have "the lazy group" those people that either just read the title and then answer, or read the title "skim" the rest of the post and answer. These folks read posts upside down, make backwards assumptions and otherwise misread posts all the time. IMHO you would encourage this behavior, I look to curtail it.

The title is an "advertisement"; people are going to place those ads how they see fit, if you think you can make a lasting impact on how people approach that and make it more thoughtful, organized, thorough and people paying special attention to what they are doing with it; you have way more faith in people than I.

A better title for this thread would have been "Thread Titles Insufficiently Informative." I had to open this thread to find out to what it pertained.

Seriously, though, the point is well taken. Useless thread titles are a big problem on this forum, and there are, seemingly, more and more of them.

I think it's mostly like a couple have said.

You make a title that would be just intriging enough for people to click that may have not otherwise.

Of course some will skip over those but apparently even tho he claims to.....not even the OP, because obviously he needed to start this thread about it. :) So probably not very many at all.

Bottom line is most of us are here when we are BORED and/or have nothing better to do and will mostly like read anything.
