Just got to thinking, If Darren Appleton wins the U.S Open again this year it would be an unbelievable feat. A feat that I don't expect to see get beat in my lifetime. I mean it would take at least 3 years to just equal it. The more I think about it the more amazing it would be. What do you think? would you expect to see it done again in your lifetime?
Well Good Luck to Darren, go get em Shag.

It would be a phenomenal acheivement and, no, I wouldn't expect it to be done again anytime soon. There are so many great players right now that it's a very tall order.

Then again, I wouldn't quite compare it to Luther Lassiter's three consecutive all-around titles at Johnston City in the early 1960's, and if Van Boening wins the all-around at Derby City for a third straight year in January, I think that this would be a feat comparable to that of Lassiter.

If Darren wins again, it will be an extraordinary achievement that merits comparison with the greatest feats over the green felt in our times. Wishing him good luck.

I really think its a bit of history. I just got done chatting with Nick Varner who held the record for 2 consecutive US Open wins for 20 years and then it was matched twice in the last 4 years. Nick thinks it would be amazing and as he had said, puts him in situation to possibly win it 4 times in a row. I know I am getting ahead of myself here but if he wins this time and then another it will be as legendary at Mosconi's 526. JMO.

There are already equal or bigger feat than Mosconi's 526.
A few examples:
The 10 pack (9 ball )Strickland run in the million dollar challenge
The 9 pack ( 9 ball) of Reyes in the 1999 world pool championship semifinal under tv coverage.
And probably Reyes comeback in the Hong Kong challenge.

Looks like it is going to be close, only two in his bracket that pose a threat are Efren (maybe) and Thorsten Hohmann all others like Mike Davis, Danny Green, Brian Deska are good players but not up to par with DA at least from pressure stand point, will see..who knows luck might shine to one of these underdogs

Not to diss Earl or Reyes but i thought Archer ran a 13 pack once against Bustamante? would that be more incredibler?

Does anybody have a link to that video of the 9 pack by Efren?? I know somebody posted it a little bit ago and I searched for it but came up dry :(

Was he playing Bustamante???

+1 to that.

I absolutely LOVE Efren. ...Not just for his skills, but for his wonderful relaxed good-natured gentlemanly manner.

If you could choose your own father/grandfather in life, I would choose him. :)

Yes, four in a row might stand forever, just like Willie's historic run.

what about earl's 5?

I still think Earl's 5 titles would trump that.

For what it's worth (1 mil) he actually ran 11 on a table tight as a duck's ass.

The 9 pack ( 9 ball) of Reyes in the 1999 world pool championship semifinal under tv coverage.

Efren is the best in the world but he was playing his kababayan on buckets. That one table-length bank hit like 5-6 inches before the pocket and still fell in.

And probably Reyes comeback in the Hong Kong challenge.

I've watched the entire thing and as amazing as Reyes's comeback was, Earl certainly helped him with his "give up." Earl had several chances to close but was already on tilt. Remember when Reyes missed with BIH towards the end and still won that rack?

He actually ran 11 racks for a MILLION and nothing is more "icredibler" than that feat as far as pocket billiards goes.

Earl did not win five US Opens in a row, nor did he win any of his five titles in the era of major Asian and European participation in the US Open. Given how much harder it is to snap of the US Open today, I think Appleton's two are almost, but not quite, on a par with Earl's five.

Darren Appleton's past 12-month effort of winning the US Open, the Challenge of Champions and WPA World 9-ball championship should stand as one of our sport's greatest achievements.

As the original post notes, and in which Nick Varner concurs, a third consecutive US Open title would deservedly be celebrated as a truly extraordinary and historic achievement.

I agree, the table was breaking and playing easy but Reyes run a 9 under tv coverage. The problem with huge packages is, often they are run in tournament where there isn't tv coverage or *any* pressure at all. Reyes run was incredible because was under tv coverage and in the semifinal of the world pool championship, not in some local or less prestigious tournament.
I also agree Reyes comeback was a little easier because Earl lost composure, but after two days of being behind and in the last day you find yourself behind 13 or 14 games, winning the match was an incredible feat.

I agree. It is so much harder winning tournaments today because there are a lot of strong players. Not that I'm saying in the past was easy but today the level of play is much higher.

Not just 4 in a row, he could potentially be the only person to win the US Open till he retires!
