Ah, now I get it. I have no idea about any of that.

To me the design similarities are striking, that's why I mentioned it. Plain and simple. I never said nor implied one cue inspired the other. For all I know TW never even saw the previous cue. Frankly I was amazed that nobody else mentioned it since we have a lot of people around here with a good eye for cues.


It looks like I was misquoted in a couple of earlier posts. It makes it look like I knew something about this "other forum" issue. I don't know anything about what is going on some other forum regarding this cue, TW, JB, etc. I really don't.

My comment on this cue was honest and independent.

The similarities= cue design theft IMO . Taking another cuemakers signature element,using it, and passing it off as your own.
 
In this case "very specific to Thomas Wayne" i dont think it qualifies as design theft. The COY as well as some of my earlier efforts were inspired by TW's intertwining designs in which he certainly pioneered in the cue world. He is well aware of this as we have discussed.

My recent notoriety with the modern twist on things may have inspired him to proceed with some designs that he had expressed he had for years. I'll add that he expressed these thoughts before this cue was born so it certainly aligned with his previous statements and not an idea that birthed from my success. I'll also add that TW is know for being at the top of the list when busting peoples ass for CDT, with that being said, I dont think he would suddenly turn into a hipocrite but felt rather that with our history and rapport that it was certainly justifiable.

If i remove my ego, i can ask myself this question
If i had never seen any of TW's earlier work, would i have even come up with the twisted veneer/over under style. Likely not. Ultimately, he did it first, I just used a material that folks apparently relate to a little more.

Regardless, Veneer work is not something i plan on hanging my hat on....its gonna take more than that to make it to the top

As for the q in this thread, i think its very well executed and know that its as tight as humanly possible due to the genius machining techniques he used. I think its a design with the potential to really speak to people, the woods/veneer chosen kind of blend/take away the true complexity that a persons mind can get wrapped up in when theres more contrast.

This is just the way i see and believe it. I'm in no ways speaking for TW
 
Well said Jake. It is a very nice cue and I would be honored to have it made by either you or Mr. Wayne.
 
Another short story.....
When TW and i first became codial, we shared a few pics. I of course was quite proud as i had finally been producing some stuff on the cnc. One of the pictures is attached.

I still have the email but its at work so i'll summarize as i dont remember the exact verbage.

TW: interesting padauk cue, i like it....what was the inspiration for that cue?
Jake: I'm not sure, just an idea that popped into my head so i ran with it
TW: interesting, i'd ask you to re-visit my 30th anniversary design
Jake: oh sh...t, i'm sorry...i promise that was not the motivation. I have no idea how this happened.

TW: its all good, thats the thing about design and inspiration. We dont really have a choice when it comes to the bits and pieces our mind picks up along the way.

Thats the conversation in a nutshell. I find it profound because its the exact opposite of what i expected from TW "or the internet TW" He was supportive, and has since been inspite of my success from some of his inspirations.


Jake< doesnt much care for the internet TW either, but will take the bad with the good

I think both cues are stunners. And the manner in which you handle a subject like this is top notch! Hats off to you Jake.

Again, beautiful cues all over this thread. The Thomas Wayne is amazing as are the pics of the blanks Jake posted. :thumbup:

Wow this is about a cue, and you guys with your drama and your self inspired ego,s that make you feel like you have to puff out your key board and act all that!. its like a bunch of jr high girls that all like the same boy!
Jake you handled it with grace and tact, that will get you a long way!
you who attack just to attack it is expected, i must say you have big key boards.. hope that makes you feel better!
Bar none , there is none of you that can sit behind those keyboards and honestly say that thomas has not been on the cutting edge of design and cue development. and if you talk with the best cuemakers alive (and I do ) they will without a doubt tell you thomas is the very best out there besides them selves ..
if you want cutting edge 4 point cues they were made50 years ago.. you all ohh and ahh with every change of color these 4 point cues have! and its laughable.. put the estrogen aside and enjoy some cues some time!

LOL, I have to tell this story about Andy Gilbert. I was living in Springfield, MO at the time and had commissioned Andy to build me a cue. He lived close so I went down there to talk him through the pictures of my design of my first custom cue.

During the conversation, I asked Andy what did he do if he didn't know how do this or that when he was building a cue. He said if a cue maker did something he didn't know how to do, he would call that cue maker up and ask him how to do it, and they would just tell him....

Frankly I was stunned. I had worked in industry and I would never tell who I thought was my competitor ANYTHING. Andy said he had talked to tons of them and they would tell him anything he wanted to know...maybe this isn't how it is now, as this was probably 20 years ago.

I will never forget that conversation.

That is some really nice work. Everything looks like it lines up perfectly, which is what I have come to expect from Thomas.
