tony choan

Thank you for your kind contribution to the thread about Tony Chohan.

We have been speaking with him on the telephone on an almost daily basis the entire time he has been away.

As someone who communicates with him verbally and in writing on an almost daily basis, I thought it might be helpful to provide the direct postal mailing address that we use; thus, why I initially, though hesitantly, posted in this thread.

In fact, we just sent him a magazine last week about college sports, Phil Steele College Football for 2014.

I used to send him books about pool, but interestingly, he told me he does not hold the same interest in pool books as he does sports in general. He did, however, really enjoy Freddy the Beard's Encyclopedia that we sent to him when it first came out.

When sending books or magazines, they must come directly from the publisher or a company like Amazon. IOW, we cannot directly send him books or magazines from our home. Only the publisher or a publisher clearinghouse like Amazon can do so. When we sent him the College Football magazine last week, we use this inmate magazine mailing service. This is the fourth time we have used this inmate magazine mailing service, and it works great ---> InmateMags.com.

Again, I make this post to those who may be interested in communicating with Tony.

Thank you again for taking the time to write in this thread as well as write to Tony.

He was a good person to gamble with win or lose
And in Detroit on his table I don't think anyone would have beat him playing even 1 pocket

JAM,

I agree on having the mailing address in order to ship new books directly from a clearinghouse.. I was just putting the JPay option out there as it has options for video chat, direct email, etc... I wasn't trying to disagree with you..

I actually feel really bad that I haven't kept up with Tony like I should.. The last time I emailed him is when I was in Afghanistan a few years ago, and then life kinda blew up on me around the same time I used up my JPay credits... I fell out of touch, and when I saw this thread and logged back on, I saw that Tony had emailed twice, one of those times, wishing me a safe return from Afghanistan... :-(

You can also use bn.com to mail him stuff but be aware that there are limitations on what you send to prisons. I mail stuff to inmates all over the country and the rules are different from place to place.

Some of the things that seem to be refused include:

● hardback books. Apparently the binding can be soaked in a toilet, softened, reshaped into something sharp, dried and then used as a weapon. Make sure you only send paperback books.

● tattoo magazines. If they have ads for, or pictures of needles then sometimes they get refused. Some places don't care, some do. Best to just not send them.

● ANY nudity. If you send any books or magazines with nudity, it will be refused. Magazines that feature bikini - clad females will usually be OK. Do not waste your time sending Playboy, Penthouse, etc.

● metal things. Paper binders with metal clasps, paper notebooks with ringed bindings, book markers with tassles, journals with elastic bindings. These get refused. Be aware of exactly what you're sending.

● books with certain themes. This is really different from one institution to the next. I have had James Patterson fiction books refused because of BDSM themes. Yet I've had true crime biographies of John Gotti and Jeffery Dahmer accepted. You may not want to send anything too off color. Know what you're sending. Don't waste your postage.

● Don't use UPS or Fed Ex. I probably don't have to say this but UPS and Fed Ex don't deliver to PO Boxes. Make sure whatever service you use will deliver to USPS boxes.

Every institution has a mail room that you can call and make sure what you want to send is OK. Make sure Tony gets lots of mail. :)

Tony will be in his early 30's when he gets out, not too old to take up pool again. Others have done it successfully, most notably Rodney Morris. Ervolino came back after five years down in Nevada and he was over 50 when he got out. Played another twenty years after that!

We just received a letter from Tony yesterday, and he sent a photo of him.

His case comes up for review early 2015. There is a chance that he could get out early. He has not had any problems and hopes to leave next year, even though his actual release date is in 2016.

Tony is in good spirits, each time I have spoken to him. He is looking forward to being with his family upon his release. His lady has stuck by him throughout this entire ordeal, as well as a few friends. :)

First time I met Tony Chohan was at the 2002 U.S. Open in Virginia. He and his cousin Amar Kang, who I called "Omar," came together. Tony was in constant action at Q-Masters between tournament days. He begged Keith to play him even, but Keith asked for a ball in one-hole. Keith knew something I didn't know about Tony's one-pocket game. ;)

In 2002, these gold grills were popular, and Tony had one. I didn't care for it too much. Thankfully, this trend did not last. :grin-square:

At the 2003 U.S. Open, a Tropical Storm knocked out all the power, including the hotel. The tournament had to be postponed. We were not allowed to leave our hotel, the Holiday Inn, right next door to the convention center. We hung out with Tony and Amar to pass the time while shut inside the hotel. We had a fridge in our room with beverages and food, so we shared. ;)
