Tony Chohan Interview - "APA takes in 26mm, pays out 1mm"

I take a gamble every time I login to this website.

He may not make any private one on one side bets, but he is gambling every time he enters a tournament. He has to pay an entry fee and his expenses. He's taking a risk in the hopes of getting a higher return on what he invests. That's gambling. And the pressure is on.
Where does he think some of the prize money comes from if not from a portion of the entry fees? From easter bunny maybe?
A person invests in the stock market....that person is gambling that the stock rises and he gets a profit from his risk. And the pressure is on.
A person enters a fishing contest....the entry fees help pay the prize monies. That's gambling. And the pressure is on.
A person opens a pool room and is gambling that his business skills produce more income than what he invested, same with a restaurant, convenience store, or a newspaper route. And the pressure is on.
A person writes a book.....and is gambling that the book sells and he gets a larger return on his original investment. And the pressure is on.
The same thing applies when entering a golf tournament, a race car event, a chess match..anything that has prizes. And the pressure is on.
When you yourself gambled on pool it may have made you a better player and you just didn't realize it at the time, you know?
The whole world of commerce rotates on risk taking......................except for the born losers. (a quote from Bert Gordon).
Just my opinon.
Keep on truckin'

So everyone is gambling, everyday, everywhere at any given moment?
Where do I get the bookings so I can place bets?

Low500 seems to think gambling is "all the way" into everything, everywhere, everyone.

Poopchump... with the 'all the way', absolute statements.
Nobody said, claimed or suggestd that.

APA weekly costs are not entry fees in a tournament (and are not advertised as such) so I'm not sure why anyone would expect those fees to be transferred back to the players.

Thorston hohman doesn't gamble to my knowledge and he is a world class player. Perpetuating the myth that gambling makes a player better is pure folly. I bet on pool from time to time, but has never made me a better player, though I won some and lost some.

Gambling doesn't magically make someone play better, but playing under pressure IS a great way to improve. Gambling is a great way to apply that kind of pressure. Some people are intrinsically motivated and that's all they need.

Isn't competition playing under pressure?

So..... we should start having every competitor in every sport start betting?

Why are you Yank's so obsessed with the gangster life style?

I said absolutely none of that. You read into things too often. Of course competition is playing under pressure. Did I say it wasn't? Where do you get this stuff? I believe some people can put enough pressure on themselves to improve regardless of what is at stake.

And "we" shouldn't do anything with anybody in any sport. It's up to the individual to decide how they apply pressure to themselves. I am simply saying that some people find gambling helpful to apply pressure. Some people NEED something on the line to try their best. Is that clear enough for you?

So now you are talking about an obsession, compulsion or addiction to gambling.

Bingo! Besides, I'd rather keep the money I worked, saved, and invested for. Those telling me I'll never get better unless I play for money are those trying to empty my wallet. Sorry guys, ain't gonna happen.
Let's see, I'm 73 years old, have diabetes, AFIB, and have worn glasses since 4th grade. 20-400 vision without glasses. Gee, so I play for money to "get better"? Gimme a break. That's pure nonsense!
Playing pool well doesn't equate to good money management.
Come on man, get happy....there's no confounded "rule" that you've got to throw away your savings.
It might make you play better than the other 73 year olds you'd play against. Unless you've just given up on life and are merely waiting to die...
There just needs to be a stake of some kind.
A meal at the nearest greasy spoon, a bottle of beer, 5 gallons of gasoline, a ticket to the car wash, tickets to hear a great blues band, anything like that.... something of value. It gives MEANING to the activity.
Otherwise, it's like playing poker for matchsticks............Boring.:boring2:
Keep on truckin'

How is it possible that you miss the point of everything I just posted about this?
Man oh man, I should've known better.
Keep on truckin', man.

This discussion again?
Let me remind you where it goes: not everybody is the same and the same experience has different impact on different people.
You know what...I think you are 100% correct.
Therefore, I'm out of the discussion and will just attend to my own little train wreck.

Can't pride be what's on the line? How about the trophy? I think the only obsession or addiction in this entire thread is your obsessive addiction to be right. I know that I can apply pressure to myself by playing for "bragging rights" with a buddy of mine. Wouldn't you consider that gambling?

Most here would not.
No monetary gain.

Why do some people equate gambling with competition?
