Top 10 current players in the world. Who and why?

Thought this could be an interesting thread. Who do you rank as the top 10 in the world, and why? Players who play the game today.

When you have found 10 players, pretend that they are playing a 10 man round robin, race to 10, winner break, 10-ball with 9-ball rules. What will the end result look like?

To make it more interesting, who do you think will have most break and runs?

I'll give a try:

1. Dennis Orcullo.
2. Alex Pagulayan.
3. Ronato Alcano.
4. Ralf Souquet.
5. Efren Reyes.
6. Fransisco Bustamante. Most break and runs.
7. Shane Van Boening.
8. Roberto Gomez.
9. Niels Feijen.
10. Chia Ching Wu.

I believe that the top 4 of the selected players are the 4 most consistent players in the world. They always finish high in every tournament they enter, and that gives them a small edge in this company.

Agree with you Roy for the most part, although I maybe wouldn't include Efren because he's been out of action of regular big televised tournament play this year. Plus the power break is a factor in 10-ball.

1/ Orcollo
2/ Pagulayan
3/ F Bustamante
4/ Souquet
5/ Manalo
6/ Van Boening
7/ Drago
8/ Wu CC
9/ Yang CS
10/ Alcano

On the periphery: Archer, Deuel, Efren

I like your selection. However, I strongly disagree with putting Manalo in front of players such as Van Boening, Wu, Yang and Alcano.

Efren is in constant action against the best players in the Philippines, every day, so I think he will be in stroke for the coming US Open :)

I liked your choice of putting Yang in the mix. I like his play, but I just couldn't figure out who to replace him with :embarrassed2:

Yep, 10-ball rankings are hard to determine given the lack of world tournament play. The only regular tournament 10-ball seems to be the Seminole FL Tour in the US and the PPT in the Philippines. The only other 10-ball tournaments of significance were the Predator 10-ball and the Lucasi Hybrid Classic.

The World 10-ball and Asia 10-ball Championship will give a further indication, hopefully Efren & Co will be in S Korea for that one.......

Looks like it's only you and me that are interested in this topic :p

I am pretty sure that Efren & Co will be in South Korea. But when is that tournament? Never heard of it. When, what, format, pricemoney etc?

I think Jasmin Ouschan belongs on the list.

Interesting. Why? And who would you replace her with?

I am a big fan of Jasmin, but I can think of atleast 10-20 players only in Europe that I believe would perform better than her in a round robin format with the 10 players I listed in post #1.

To name a few, that's not on my list:

Thomas Engert, Tony Drago, Darren Appleton, Nick van den Berg, Alex Lely, Marcus Chamat, Mika Immonen, Thorsten Hohmann, Oliver Ortmann, David Alcaide, Marco Tschudi.

But, for those interested. During the last years she has actually beat top players such as Darren Appleton, Fabio Petroni, Tony Drago, Thomas Engert, Stephan Cohen, Konstantin Stepanov, Mika Immonen, Allen Hopkins, Oliver Ortmann, John Schmidt, Serge Das and Chinahov Ruslan on either the Eurotour or in the World 14-1 Championship. Her best performance on the Eurotour is 9th, and during the last 3 years at the World 14-1 Championship she has finished 5th, 9th and 3rd.

She definitely deserves to be mentioned as one of the greatest players playing today.

Obviously this is very subjective. On any given day any one of these players might not play top 10 and any of 40 others might (yes even in round robin format). So, fwiw here's my list:

1. Alex Pagulayan
2. Dennis Orcullo
3. Francisco Bustamante
4. Ralf Souqet
5. Ronnie Alcano
6. SVB - most break and runs if it's not rack your own
7. Yang
8. Wu
9. Archer
10. Deuel if it's rack your own - most break and runs

Once again, you guys have left the Crawman off the list. Thanks. Now, I know I have no credentials, have never beaten a champion without weight, and never won a big tourney. But, hey, I did stay at a Red Roof Inn last week. So, please put me under Busty. Thanks.

no Fu after he just won the Challenge of Champions and knocked off Orcullo 5-2, 5-1??

He's gonna be in the top 10 at least now.

The rest of the rankings look pretty spot on, except I might have SVB in the top 3.

I think Jung-Lin Chang may also be in the top ten. He has won 6 Guinness Tour stops in the past two years, including the season finale last year.

If I would've said that .....

If I would've said that everyone would've thought I was serious and would've started berating my game. :) :)

ok i think its hard to find the 10 best players out of 100 guys who can play at an unreal standard, but if i had to pick em,,,,,

(not in any real order)

#1. DENNIS ORCOLLO
#2. FRANSISCO BUSTAMENTE
#3. NIELS FEIJEN
#4. RONNIE ALCANO
#5. ALEX PAGULAYAN
#6. SHANE VaAN BOENING
#7. JUNG-LIN CHANG
#8. CHIA CHING WU
#9. RALF SOUQUET
#10. YANG

How about this Rotation 9 or 10 ball Phil vs. The World

  1. Orcullo
  2. Bustamante
  3. Alex
  4. Alcano
  5. Reyes

vs.

  1. Wu
  2. Shane
  3. Ralf Soquet
  4. Yang
  5. FEIJEN or MIKA????
[/LIST]

I have found the previouse lists very interesting thus far. I have a very hard time narrowing my selection to 10 players. There are probably 30 players in the world who can play the best over a given week.

If I had to design a list, I find it hard to leave Archer off. Not because of his previouse titles, but because of his current level of play. I'm liking his chances with this kind of format.

When it comes to the Phillipines always listen to The Action Report:

1. Always bet on the Phillipino
2. Never bet against Shane
3. If Shane plays a Phillipino keep your money in your pocket.

If this match were to ever happen I'll take the Phillipines. If they play full rotation you can have odds.

Top 10

#1. Dennis Orcollo
#2. Fransisco Bustamante
#3. Thorsten Hohmann
#4. Ronnie Alcano
#5. Alex Pagulayan
#6. Shane Van Boening
#7. Jian Bo Fu (Just beat Orcollo in 2008 COC to win it)
#8. Chia Ching Wu
#9. Ralf Souquet
#10. Yang

Although I don't have enough room for Archer or Deuel, I want to mention them. And I think Hohmann plays better than Feijen.
