In a race to 7, what would you guess is the total number of games that is played ON AVERAGE? I'm guessing 12.

In a race to 9, what would you guess is the totat number of games that is played on AVERAGE? I'm guessin 15.

What are your guesses?

Thanks,

If you are trying to figure how to schedule matches the best thing you can do is allot 90 mins a match and check on them at 60 mins and get that shot clock going early as possible. There are some sloooowww players that totally can ruin the ebb and flow of a tourney and the only way to get that under control is calling for the clock.

I think you're pretty close. The beginning of the tourney will see some lopsided wins. As it winds down there'll be some close, if not hill-hill, sets.

Best,
Mike

No, I am trying to estimate how many games are played in a 64 man field with 64 players and 128 players.

There are 126 MATCHES played during a 64 man double elimination tournament. 64 on the winners side and 62 on the one loss side. Does that sound about right?

According to my numbers:
64 man DE tournament, race to 7, 126 Matches, =1,512 games.
64 man DE tournament, race to 7/5, 126 matches =1,264 games.
64 man DE tournament, race to 9, 126 Matches, = 1,890 games.

Do those numbers look fairly accurate? I'm open to correction so let me hear your thoughts. How would you adjust the numbers?

Thanks,

JoeyA I think your estimates are pretty darn close on average. If I guessed I would use the same numbers you did.

You sure you not trying to figure it out so you could slip in a nap between matches so you'd be the fresher player ? You been around my friend..sly like a fox..

If I was planning an event, I would always figure conservatively.

Race to 7 - 10 games
Race to 9 - 14 games
Race to 5 - 7 games

9 Ball

Race to 7 - 1hr 30 mins
Race to 9 - 2 hrs
Race to 5 - 1hr

In a race to 7 I think 12 is a little high, with 13 being the max. I'll guess 11.2 :D

15 going to 9 I guess would be pretty close.

This is the way it works.

No, I've figured that out already. I tell some knuckle-head that people are crazy to buy me in the Calcutta because I have no chance and the knuckle-head thinks I am trying to steer him away from buying me in the Calcutta. He asks around and they say I am old horse but can be trusted in not dumping, I might buy half of myself and every now and then I catch lightning in a jar. He figures on that and guesses that I am an OK risk. So the knuckle-head buys me in the Calcutta and I give him my cell phone number and tell him to wake me before each match and I go snooze in the car, listening to music and occasionally my pool hypnosis cd. :D

Every now and then I will scare the Calcutta buyers when they pay too much and I make them buy all of me, (don't take half) and they look at me with that WTF look on their face. Then they run around the room, trying to sell the half I don't want. It's kind of fun to watch their selling skills. :D

But you thinnk 7-3 is an average score in a race to 7???? Still, I appreciate the thoughts. race to 9 seems ok at 14 games. I don't think 7-3 is an average number of games for a race to 7.

Do you think the time element changes from bar table to big table? IF so, how?
Thanks,

Speaking of rest in between matches makes me think about a match a staked years ago..will leave the names out but it was a one pocket match & we had played the night before and the room closed on us...it wasn't a 24hr joint & we were 1 game loser & made a time right after lunch to get resumed...One of my buddies that was betting on my player called me the next day hours after we had started & asked how we was doing cuz he had the guy we was playings cell number & called him all morning asking for some other guy...said the guy was nice as could be everytime he called & my buddy said he was like...come on man I know you screwing with me put him on the phone...well whatever my buddy was trying to do didnt work cuz our opponent shot like God & we wound up another $2400 loser...Story was kinda funny i have to admit the way he told it to me but my buddy trying to help got the old Karma thing out of our corner for sure....so moral of the story is the fresher player don't always get the money..lol:grin: oh & keep positive karma on your side.

Joey,

Guestimates are just that guesses. Without knowing the reason for the question, I would say be conservative.

If I was trying to figure if I had time to go eat. Conservative. If a player asked me how long he had. Conservative. Can't think of a single reason to not be conservative with that question.

Yes. 7-3 I think is a good average. I tracked scores for years when I would use them to write up articles.

The total number of matches in a full-field, double-elimination tournament is 2N-2, where N is the number of players. Add one more match if the finals is true double elimination and it goes to the second match.

So for 64 players, 2x64 - 2 = 126 matches, as you have.

For 128 players, 2x128 - 2 = 254 matches.

I think your estimates of the number of games per match (12, 8, and 15 for your three races) are pretty good, possibly a bit high. Without knowing the purpose for which you are estimating those numbers, I don't know whether it is good to be conservative (high) or not. If you were to change to 11/8/14 instead of 12/8/15, you'd reduce the 1,512 estimate by 126 games, to 1,386; you'd reduce the 1,264 estimate by 64 games, to 1,200; and you'd reduce the 1,890 estimate by 126 games, to 1,764.

Does this relate to estimating the "table time" from a tournament on coin-operated bar boxes?

that's funny, I always bought myself in Calcuttas but this one tournament I started feeling really sick as they were bidding and when my name came up I said put me in the pool I am sick and will probably have to quit and I am not buying half of myself.
The director didn't pay any attention and they bid on me and then the guy that won comes over and says to give him half the money.
I said , didn't you hear me tell everyone I am sick and not buying myself?
he turns green and walks off calling me a nit.
Of course I come in second and I feel like I am going to die, and the guy who bought me didn't even say thanks.
Life's a hoot ain't it?
