tournaments that only allow you to use a playing cue

If tournaments only allowed you to use a playing cue, would it be a good thing?

I had a thought this morning when I was working out. Alot of the older players gripe about jump cues and everyone knows how Earl the Pearl feels about this. Also many feel that kicking has lost some of its expertise do to people jumping. I was curious how would everyone feel if tournaments only allowed your playing cue. You have to break and jump with it. A well made cue should handle the job just fine. We would see alot more kicking I think.

I don't mind either way. However, I know that some low-deflection cues don't jump well at all. I generally only use one cue and it jumps okay. I've seen Rafael Martinez do amazing things with a normal cue, so I know just about anything is possible with one cue.

IMHO the cue-ball is supposed to roll, not fly. Balls leaving the table is against the spirit of cuesports. Jumping also renders a lot of skillful snookers a waste of effort.

Thanks for the input guys, hopefully more will post on this thread and it will take off.

The way your poll is written, a player may only take a single cue with them for a match. Obviouly they must break, jump AND play with that one cue. If that was not your intention, please re-write your poll question.

Personally, I don't jump. Not having a separate cue for that function doesn't bother me. As far as breaking, I use a second Schon cue with a larger and harder tip. I'm sure I could find a tip to use for all occasions.

Concurrently, golf and bowling allow multiple aids to the player. A bowling ball for "dry" vrs. "wet". Different side and finger weights. Different golf club lengths, materials and angled heads. Is the jump cue different from them? I have no problem with players using jump cues but honestly would prefer to see them banned. Somehow the game of three cushion billiards needs to be saved for future generations. No jump sticks might help.

Personally I don't care either way. I appreciate the skill of kicking masse and jumping. Especially since I don't do any of them all that well. People will find something to complain about no matter what you do. I have heard a lot of complaints about 9 ball not being played the way it used to be. Things change...that's all.

I'm fine with tournaments that ban jump cues. I don't like the idea of a hard-break game that bans break cues, though. I'm not going to crank up the break with an ivory-ferrule, ivory-joint cue.

Tournaments that only allow you to use a playing cue

i would love to see this happen i really think jump cues take away from the game not add to it

Cardiac kid, I didnt make a mistake, you understood my intent. I hear what your saying about golf and bowling.

I am not against or for jump cues. Just was wondering about it this morning and thought it would make a good thread.

If this is jump cue related, I got zero issues related to not allowing them in a certain tournament.....not a fan of jump cues myself....

In hard breaking games, I do not like breaking with my player....I got zero issues using a house cue to break (can do without my break cue), but I prefer not to break with my player...

My two cents...

JUMP CUE! When I was a kid, you couldn't jump with a freekin jump cue! That ain't jumpin'. What the heck is that! You gotta tiny little cue and you're all pleased as punch, you gotta smile on your face like you did something . Get the fu..I jump with MUECCI! I'll jump full table with a Meucci! How 'bout that? How strong is that?

I would do what the tournament rules called for or not enter at all....SPF=randyg

They should allow you to break with a different cue to prevent damage to your playing cue. They should ban jump cues. After the break you play with one cue. If you can jump with your playing cue, go right ahead.

i don't like jump cues, i believe break cues with normal leather tips should be allowed. The jump cue just takes the beauty of a good safety out of the game if you dont lock up on a ball they just jump. I know some say play a tighter safety but I say learn how to kick balls were meant to roll.

Play cue only

I agree that for some things old school is the way to go. However, i enjoy using a jump/break cue. With the high cost of a custom cue nowadays i would prefer NOT to jump and break with my play cue. Also a big factor in having to use your playing cue to jump with, you need a hard tip. How many people do you know who play with a buffalo tip on their play cue?

How many different ways can we rephrase the opinion "I don't like jump cues, how bout you guys?"

i am not a fan at all of jumping a cue ball or jump cues. i learned to kick to get out of trouble and feel that is what the game was meant to be!

I didn't vote because the choices didn't work for me. I can do without jump cues altogether (could actually do without jumping) but I don't like to break with my playing cue, it's unnecessary pounding on the tip. But I don't care about a hot-tipped, hi-tech break cue either. A house stick would be fine for me.

I am niether for or against jump cues or break cues. Just thought it would be good topic. I jump very well as with or without a jump cue. I like using a jump cue if I accidentally hook myself in the middle of my run. What I dont like is when I hook you, you table length jump make a ball play three rail position and get out when its hill hill (best jump I have ever seen in person, and it was against me for the win). Now if i made that shot then its totally ok :D!
