Training possibility

Grady

Pro Player
I’ve been thinking seriously about taking a protégé/apprentice. Of course I’d have to sell the idea to the wife. Here’s what I’d offer:
1. He or she could stay with us for probably a year, maybe longer if things went smoothly.
2. Extensive training, including everything of value in pool.
3.I’d obtain sponsorship for this person, including the IPT venues. (Assuming we could get their game up to snuff.)
4. This person could be my corner person in the IPT tournaments.
5. Too many other areas of value to mention. I’d give him or her all this accumulated knowledge in my head, even proper gambling techniques. I, or some of my friends, would stake this person in matches for money.

Here is what I would require:
A. No drugs or alcohol and no criminal background. References required, of course.
B. Must be responsible, honest, hard working, dedicated, loyal and have a good personality ( speaks another language a plus).
C. Should be between 20 and 35 years of age.
D. The only thing I would charge would be for the food, drink and travel for this student, except I’d want an agreement to the effect that after I teach this person and get them in the IPT, I’d get 12 per cent of their earnings for three years.
E. Lastly, I don’t want any spoiled brats, just hopefully a serious lover of pool who’d like to really step up their game.

Serious inquiries only.

That sounds phenomenal Grady! I would love to apply for this as I would fit your description, unfortunately I'm trying to start a career and not able to dedicate this kind of time.

But good luck to you, I hope you find someone who is worth your time. They could benefit greatly from the experiance you are offering.

More Info

I would greatly be interested. I am 26, started playing when i was 24, my gf has always worked at a pool hall here in Dallas,Tx so i always get free pool. Since i started i have played upwards of fifty hours a week, every week. I play with alot of good players, Tj Davis, Robert Clark, Chen "Lee". Mostly just playing cheap pool, lot of big spots and whatnot. Not much learning there though except what you observe and learn from it, what you can put into practice.Currently i am a b+ player, never ran more than three racks in a row, my hi run i straight pool is 46. Never had lessons, just read alot of byrnes books, and kinnester videos, he is in my poolhall just about every day. Dont know if you are looking for someone who already has extreme talent for the game or someone extremely dedicated or both. Would like to talk with you more on it. Would not be able to just jump straight in, but it could be done.
Thanks for your time.
Ken Stewart.

That's a very generous offer and I wish you the very best of luck with it.

I would suggest that (if you had not already planned on it) you may want to setup some kind of trial period for this, to ensure the prospective protege and yourself will be able to get along, which is not something you can always tell until you actually start doing something like this.

Beautiful notion, Grady. I fit most (including being fully bi-lingual) though not all of your stipulations. It's really encouraging to know that your knowledge will be passed on. Good luck to you and whoever gets the benefit of your offer. A greater idea couldn't be arrived at.

Grady,
Well, this is blatant age discrimination:) :) ; I suppose I'm going to have to keep that stupid day job now (can't afford one of those snooty ACLU lawyers). I have KIDS that old, but I guess that doesn't count.

In any case, I'll just tell any prospective candidates that there is nowhere else in the world that this kind of opportunity and knowledge could be obtained. If you are serious about pool, this would be GREAT.

I hope you and your new protege' will come to visit sometime.

How long of a walk is it from minnesota to south carolina? Great idea grady. Good luck with it, if the good wife willing!

What an opportunity!

What an opportunity for a young player! When I was coming up I would have went ashore at Omaha Beach in Normandy to get a shot like that. Sadly, the hard part is going to be getting someone worthy enough to receive that education. Especially when it comes to staying for the long haul. There will be a jillion guys that will swear up and down that they have the commitment to learn, but it will often turn out that their enthusiasm, dedication, and ambition will vanish once they come to realize just how committed you are and always were. I know where you are coming from. You are seeking someone that will match your mindset and fire, someone who will be just as anxious to learn as you will be to teach. I wish you luck.

I have a champion English pool player coming to Chicago to study under me in preparation for the IPT tour. He appears to have the desired attitudes. We shall see. It will be a pleasant surprise.

Thanks to all you who have sent replys and the suggestions are certainly helpful. Please send serious replys to my email, grady101@sc.rr.com instead of to "private messages". Email is checked far more often and is less of a hassle.
Everyone should know that there isn't a decent pool room in the Columbia area. I have exactly the IPT equipment in my house and that's all I play on when I'm home. Furthermore, all I play is 8 Ball because of the great prize money in the IPT.
I run six miles every day, (with hills) and I practice four hours, sometimes more. I would expect any protege to at least keep up with me in the practice department.
I think the trial period suggestion is excellent.

You had me until the running 6 miles over hills part. Same reason I didn't join the Military.:(

However, if you could accept someone that would follow you with the car, while having a cigarette, then I'm your guy.

p.s. You have to tell my wife.

This sounds like a great opportunity for reality TV show. Start out with 10 applicants and start eliminating. If you got the sponsors, this would be great for the IPT, Grady and the winner. I'd watch it.

I would watch it too, great suggestion. Wonderful offer Grady. I wish I was a little younger with no other responsibilities - I would take you up in a heartbeat. I think my dedication to pool has been proven over the years.

I remember at the LA Open in 93, you told me you could take any man, woman or child and turn them into a pool champion. Then you complained that I made you my rack boy, lol. ;)

Good luck finding the right warrior to mold. You're the best!

Ditto on the reality TV aspect of it. I think you could sell the idea to KT and they could sell it to the network. Kinda like the Ultimate Fighting series.

And you could be as vulgar as you want to be - the bleeps make good TV. A'la Orange County Choppers.

That's why I said it would be good for the IPT. ;) The more I think about it, the more I would like to see it happen.

The only problem with it being on TV is that the dillusional, wanna-be players would stay away from the qualifiers, seeing how difficult it is to properly train for the IPT.

Talk to Kevin about it, for sure. It'd be a nice sidebar to the IPT broadcasts.

Heck yeah! This could be like Donald Trump and The Apprentice! I can see Grady now..."You failed to pocket three friggin' balls! YOU'RE FIRED!"  LOL That would be the easy way to find the 'right one', for sure! :D

Seriously Grady...this is a great idea, and I wish you the best, in finding someone gifted and gracious enough to accept your generous offer! Sure wish I was 30 yrs younger! LOL

With the popularity of Reality TV, this is the best idea to come alog in a while.

Class move, Grady. I would have given my eye-teeth for an opportunity like this 20 years ago.
