Tricks To Keep Grip Hand Loose?

I have been having an on going problem with tightening my wrist when shooting certain shots. Of course if I think about it while shooting the shots I can keep it loose most of the time, but I don't like to think of anything but the aiming point on the OB and speed once I get down on the shot. Anyone have any cure/trick for this? Thanks in advance. Johnnyt

I believe its a normal thing. You just have to keep adapting and let your muscle memory get over it. I'm also having the same problem as you as I'm trying to adapt to another stroke which is the slip stroke. Kinda like it but I always keep thinking that my cue is gonna fly away from my grip hand at times.

I have two Johnny, neither of which are recommended, orthodox, or meant to be used full time IMO. Just something interesting to play with, nothing more, no need to have all the know it alls chime in, just fun for experiment.

1. At the moment of contact with the CB, let go of the butt end. Simply release all of your grip and let go completely, subtly but completely. BTW, this one is very helpful on long straight in shots.

2. Curl your wrist under just a tickle. You CAN'T tighten your grip then.

You can also focus on resting the butt on your second and third finger tip

Try cradling the cue in your fingers....no thumb contact. I do this occasionally when I feel tense and catch myself gripping the cue too tightly.

The key is to "cradle" the cue, letting it rest on your fingers...not gripping at all. In fact, depending on how hard you are going to hit the cue ball, or how powerful your warm-up strokes are...you possibly will feel a little slippage.

Maniac (never uses this grip regularly...just for "correction" when gripping too tightly)

Grip the cue fairly tight, almost a death grip.
Back off the pressure a little and curl your pinky in so that the knuckle is pressing against the butt .
Now apply the death grip this should hurt your pinky.
Now back off the pressure on your pinky until it is just resting on the cue (No Pressure) this should also release the pressure of the other 3 fingers to where it feels right. problem is solved.
I believe what is the perfect grip pressure.
After you get use to that pressure and feel, you can put the pinky back where it belongs in its cradle.

Here is a solution that works well for me when tightening up too much.

Put a lot more pressure on the solidity of your bridge hand. Push down on your bridge hand so much that your forearm might even be shaking a little. Watch as your grip hand naturally loosens right on up and you start firing them in. Works for me.

I find that if I make sure my thumb is pointing straight down, it helps me keep a relaxed grip (conversely, if I allow my wrist to curl - as it naturally wants to do - I tighten my grip). Keeping the thumb straight down also gives me more wrist action...and a straighter stroke.

It's explained by a guy named GreyGhost (don't know who he is) in this video at 5:45.

1) Change your name to Keith or Steve

2) Move to Atlanta

3) Start Waiting tables

You should never worry about a tight wrist again... (or anything else being tight for that matter....)

Hold the cue with just 2 fingers were u normaly grip at. Helps when I cant get the good snap into my wrist gl

Relax your thumb and index finger. These two pinched together create the tightness in your wrist. True for golf as well.

Hold a cube of chalk in the grip hand.

Works every time and impossible to tighten hand.

Please PM me for an address for payment.

Years ago I had a Pro player who told me Hal Mix (the teacher) had him wear a oven mitt...Wear it while your practicing and it gives you the feel of how your cue should be gripped...Honest..It works....

Please elaborate.

I have no issues in tightening my grip no matter how my wrist is orientated.

You don't even need a cue to feel how this can effect your grip. Hold your grip hand at your side and lightly touch your fingertips to the heel of your hand. Now turn your wrist in slightly toward your body. Your fingertips leave the heel of your hand.

Of course you can overcome this with force.

Think of your thumb as nothing more than a trap door that prevents the cue from falling out the side of your grip. This though has helped me immensely. I have also tried thinking about a potato chip between my thumb and finger and I don't want to crush that chip.

Tried it, doesn't work, and I wasn't even applying that much pressure.
