I'm 19 and I'm a 4 in Apa 9 and 8 ball.. And a 3 in tap.. I know how to masse, draw, and use inside and out side English.. But I have a really Hard time stopping the ball I have a lot to learn and I have been getting better with help from really good league players.. If anyone has any suggestions on how to help me better my game in any way please let me know

You should post this question in the Ask the Instructor forum...you'll get more advice than you probably want, but at least there you'll get good, consistent advice. Stop shots are not really that difficult, depends on the distance between the CB and OB. I like to use a half tip of draw with a quick stroke; follow-through usually helps, especially keeping the cue straight through the stroke. The further the distance, the more draw you'll need to stop the CB. It's really a matter of touch and you should practice with short stop shots, moving back as you get comfortable and successful. Once you master it, it will be the most reliable shot you have. You'll also find that the same stroke on angled shots will give you stun, and will help in killing the CB when you need to hold it for the next shot.

It is easy enough. It takes practice. Since you know how to draw a cue ball, try to draw the cue ball an inch back from different distances. I bet you find a nice stop shot along the way.

Good luck!

The cue ball only stops on a direct hit with the object ball when the cb is actually sliding across the cloth. No forward or backwards roll on the cb. To get contact with the ob while the cb is sliding depends on the distance and the speed of the cb to the ob.

Take a striped ball, and hit it in the center at various speeds. You will be able to see when the ball stops sliding and starts rolling. Also, hit the striped ball below center at various speeds, and you will see where the backspin wears off, it slides for a short distance, and then forward roll takes over.

At longer distances, you must hit below center on the cb, and hit harder than on closer shots. Practice it. It is the most important thing to learn about position play. (not the only thing by a long shot, though) Essentially, it is the foundation of position play. You want to learn to be able to stop the cb from any distance.

I like objectivity. As a general rule of thumb, the 1/2 tip of draw (put top of tip on CB horizontal axis) and a firm stroke will work for most shots up to about 3 diamonds. On longer shots you start lowering the tip and/or stroking harder.

Thank you all very much
I'll practice everything you all have told me tonight..
Does anyone have any drills I should do as well? .. I have lots of questions.. I want to get better and my goal is be better my dad and uncle (both are 6 in 8 ball ) and try to be equal if not better to the good 7s .. It means alot to get advice from people who have been in my shoes.. Again thank you to everyone who has given me their advice

When you are practicing, use page reenforcement holes, I call them "donuts" to mark your practice shots. You will be able to shoot the exact same shot every time. This will give you an indication of what your cue ball is doing in relation to the donut hole of the object ball. Also, when you are playing, make note of your misses and then set up a similar shot using the donuts. Shoot the shot over and over until you drill it into your memory. I would add though, that your basic fundamentals have to be sound. Mark Wilson's new book "Play Great Pool" would be a good investment for you

Plenty, but if you are really serious and committed to improvement, find an instructor to work with you.

Thank you all very much

Just wondering, when you say you have trouble stopping, where is the cue ball going? Going forward? Drawing back? Sliding off to the side?

This page from Dr. Dave's site probably contains all the information you'll need to know about the stop shot, and its cousin, the stun shot:

Good luck and happy shooting!

I normally draw it orr follow so instead of trying stop I would either go for a harder out or try to slow roll the ob I don't know why I have so much trouble.. Between that and my nerves I'm surprise I ever win lol

Thank you very much and I will post it on the other forum

I see you haven't asked your question in the Ask the Instructor forum. You should do that for your best answers.

IMO you should try short straight shots with a firm stroke first. Don't overpower the stroke... just a firm center hit.

There are excellent videos by good instructors. Check out the Youtube video by Mike Page on How to play pool
In 10 minutes. Mike has a variety of videos and very good information under the Youtube name of FargoBilliards.
