Trying to get Earl to sign my case at the DCC

Cool story John.

Earl is as competitive as they come on the table and certainly has some antics that go way too far but stories about some of the stuff he does away from the table show him to have a huge heart. The best story i heard was the one with the hungry stray cat (i think it was a cat) he snuck into his hotel room to feed while on the road.

but more importantly, does he like to catch fish?

speaking of which, you still have a standing invite to go out on the Gator Bait boat if you're ever up this way.

I know yer stuck like velcro though, down there. :grin-square:

best,
brian kc

I might just surprise you one of these days,I can only take so much,ya know:p

My son loves to fish. He's been fishin since he was about 1:) He grew up catching 1 lb blue gills, 2 to 4lb bass and catfish up to about 10 lbs, on our family's 3ac,lake:wink:

Looks like when I come up there,I better bring some of my heavy equipment. I'll show how to go after the bigger ones, buddy:D

Hey I'm bettin that old tackle box used to be your dads or grand dads. I still have my dads and his dads and they look just like that.

Now I got to go sharpen my axe, going ice fishin for a while:frown: John B.

Very good question and good thinking also.

Like you already know...the worst possible time would be right after a loss.:D
Speaking for myself,I will be so mad I could spit and don't even want to talk to anyone let alone have to do something for someone, however I still would:wink: But it would be pretty sloppy and fast:p

I really don't think you would have any problems catching them on the way to a match.( That should not bother them at all, imo) I would just make sure to ask them before they got inside the ropes.

I got a lot of mine while they were just setting around with their friends and or watching matches.Shoot I got about 6 to 10 at one time with the pinos .They were all setting around together and I got one of them to and they just passed it all the way around. That was cool, AP,ER,RL,RA,RG,DO and so on and so forth, lol They are all good guys and very friendly.

Maybe the best place and time is out in the hall or lobby, where ever they hang out at the most.( and when they are watching a match:wink:) I guess some venues would be diff tho. Just catch em where ever..just not right after a loss:thumbup: John B.

When I was in Vegas I hung around the hallway by the tournament room to get some autographs on my case. I was catching them two at a time lol. I literally ran out of room on that case. Having a silver sharpie in hand sure helps

He is very talented and has a good stroke but he has just never caught the "pool bug".Not sure if that's bad thing or a good thing:p

It's a very good thing compared to guys like me who have no talent and a mediocre stroke but caught the bug bad.:embarrassed2:

Ohhhhhh, well no wonder I didn't get it. Don't think I have heard that new idea of Earls:p JB

Earl talks about no side pockets all the time around the pool room these days. I said "Earl, you've won everything there is to win on a table with 6 pockets... maybe the table is just fine as it is" He yelled at me and said I don't know what I'm talking about. So, they're that.

That is a good story but it was actually more like 6 cats maybe more. A bunch of them lived behind the hotel by the dumpster. He must have bought 20 cans of tuna lol they were everywhere.

Thought I would share this little story about Earl Strickland. I had been waiting for the right time to catch Earl so I could get him to sign my case.

One afternoon I'm walking down the hall way heading to my room.I see Earl coming down the hall at me.I stop him. (Earl and I have known each for along time. We used to hang out at the same pool room In Richmond,ky back in the 80's.)

So I say hey Earl if you don't mind would you sign my case. I'm trying to get some top players to sign it and give it to my son.

He says, I would Johnny but I don't have time and I'll catch ya later.:(

So later that night there is a bunch of us hangin out in the hall in front of the tournament room having a big time. All of the sudden here's comes Earl marching over to us and Screaming!.( you know his voice )."where's Johnny Brumback where's Johnny Brumback!" I need to sign his case!! Pretty darn cool of Earl not to forget like that.

Funny to me too that Earl is the only pool player that calls me Johnny lol.

Earl is nice guy just as long as you are not trying to beat him:p John B.

"Funny to me too that Earl is the only pool player that calls me Johnny lol" I think he likes to just add a "Y" onto peoples names. He is the only person who calls me Markey. Not sure why or where it came from.

Being addressed in the diminutive is a sign of affection...
....wear it with pride

What'd he do..scratch in the side here lately? lol

One year at the dcc the day before it started I had just walked in the building and there's Earl,I had on a brown flannel looking wool shirt and he says real loud in his squeeky voice Johnny.. did you just climb down from a tree? lol

Here's another one of Earl's to me. About 3 or 4 years ago. Earl and I draw each other in the one pocket.

.Well we get started and he's down on his shot and I'm sitting right behind him,not making a sound.Well all of the sudden he gets up off his shot just enough so that he can turn around to look at me and says...not real loud but kinda mean sounding..." ya know I'll shoot your heart out, don't you! " I just gave him a chuckle and he went on and shot, lol.

I might as well tell how the match went after that.Well I broke the first game and won it. So now it's his turn to break.( this is one pocket too) He goes down and racks the balls up and heads back to his seat. I said Earl it's your break. He looks at me and sneers..oh you just go ahead and break em!

So I took him up on his offer and won the match 3 to 1 :D I've played Earl a bunch of times over the years and after the matches he is a good dude imo.haha John B.

Very distinctive:D No my son does not.but for some reason he is a natural when it comes to banking balls:) He is very talented and has a good stroke but he has just never caught the "pool bug".Not sure if that's bad thing or a good thing:p John B.

Well, I used to play soccer and was a pretty darn decent player in my day. I'm 39 now and not in shape so my soccer days are done. Anyway, story goes like this. I was lucky enough in high school to date a very attractive college girl who went to school with the top college soccer player in the nation at the time, Dante Washington. I went to all of the games and got to talk to Dante on a few occasions and once I asked if he was going pro...he said, nah, I think I'm headed to law school...I was very disappointed and told him there's no way a guy with his talent should just stop playing the game for books... So many dream but very few can actually play professional sports in any sport and compete at that level...He was very special, too special to quit the game. He went on to play MLS soccer, overseas, and played on the United States National team. I was proud of his decision to take a chance to use his talent beyond college ball and man did he do it with style and class!! Was he our best ever player? No.Was he a top pro the likes of Ronaldo or Lionel Messi, not close..but he was damn good. Just saying encourage your son...you can't make up his mind but it sounds like he has some serious talent....hate to see it go to waste! I hope he gets the bug!!

Nice stories John, nice to hear it was important for Earl to find you and sign the case, you are giving to your son. The cat story is priceless, Earl rocks.

I was at the DCC and waiting for a friend as he was purchasing his pass. Earl was standing close to me and talking to another pro about his thoughts about playing banks and then 9 ball. He said it was hard because you are still playing banks in your head and while he was talking he looked at me and asked isn't that right. He just acted as if I was part of his conversation.

Welcome to Earl's world...good story.

Hey John, sorry I don't mean to hijack your thread but since we are sharing the nice side of Earl stories. This one is in my book that I hope to get out at some point and I may have shared before but its another Earl/Cat Story.

Chapter 4

Earl and Jazzy

I had been on the road with Earl, Corey Deuel, Hillbilly and John Schmidt. Somehow we all ended up at my house in Phoenix for a few days. One by one everyone made their way home except Earl, so it was just him and me, no problem there as the golf was on TV and so we spent most of our time watching that. The fridge was stocked with food and drink and I told Earl to just help himself to anything he needed.

The evening came around and we were just sat chatting on the patio and here comes a cat over the wall. A cat I have never seen before but it obviously belonged to someone as it had a collar and a tag. Earl being the cat lover picks it up right away and looks at the collar. The tag has a phone number that isn't readable but in big bold letters "Jazzy".

The conversation went like this

E: "He looks hungry and scared, let’s take him inside and get him something to eat"

M: "NO WAY Earl, we don't know anything about this cat and if we feed it it won't ever leave"

E: "But he looks hungry and if he gets on the road he might get hurt"

M: "I don't think so man he has made it this far"

E: "But he is hungry"

M: Earl the cat is as big as a house, I am sure he is not hungry. On top of that I don't want that cat in my house it could claw the leather couch or shit and piss all over"

E: "He won't"

M: How do you know are you the ****ing cat whisperer now? We don't even know the cat"

E: "Yeah we do, his name is Jazzy"

M: "NO way"

E: " So you gonna just let it starve and get hit by a car then??"

M: "Yup"

E: "T-Wheels, you have no heart at all do you?"

E: Ok, well it’s on your conscience if anything happens to Jazzy, I'm gonna get something to eat"

At this point Earl goes to the fridge and pulls out a chicken breast (A nice thick one, not the little ones you get out of a bag) he seasons it and puts it on the grill and once its cooked he begins to cut it into small pieces and takes it out to the patio and puts it on the ground for Jazzy.

M: "Hey man what you doing??"

E: "**** you man he’s hungry"

M: "Jesus Earl, I'm never gonna get rid of him now"

E: “we should let him in still"

M: "NO!"

Earl continues to plead Jazzy's case for a few minutes like he is defending a client on trial for his life. Finally I see how to put an end to this.

M: 'Ok, so you are positive 100% that Jazzy will not claw my couch, shit, piss or do anything that will cause damage to my place?"

E: "Yes, positive"

M: "Alright then I will make a deal with you. Jazzy can come in but if it does one little tiny bit of damage to anything you give me 2 grand to cover it"

E: "Ok"

M: "Wait a second, post it"

E: "What???"

M: "Post it"

E; "Are you crazy??"

M: "What’s wrong with that this is all a gamble so Post it"

E: "I don't have 2k on me"

M: "Yeah, ****ing air barrel on the cat"

E: "I will give you the money"

M: "Ok, but I mean it"

So I was really hoping at this point that the cat would do something cos the couch probably ain't worth 2k anymore and I had my eye on plasma for my bedroom. Well Jazzy was well behaved and Earl ended up playing with him most of the night.

I call Earl now every time Jazzy shows up at the house and even took a picture of it and sent it to him. Jazzy seems to like it here and shows up and makes a very loud MEOW constantly until I feed it some tuna. I have even started buying the crappy cheap tuna at the store for when he shows up cos he won't just go away he makes such a noise. Sometimes Earl does not like it when I call him to just say Jazzy is here. However I figure that if I got to listen to it he should too. So that’s the time that Jazzy almost made me 2k from the Pearl.

LOL you even took a pic of it and sent it to him!! Priceless:thumbup: Does Earl know that a cat is the only animal that will kill... even when it's not hungry? Lmao great story about Earl the Pearl!! John B.
