Trying to let everyone know your in the "know"

I always liked that about the pool room, that there is this pool subculture that is pretty uniform in most places. I know that no matter where I go (at least in the USA), I can walk into any pool room and the language used is all pretty similar.

"He's got the nuts"
"Dont woof at me"
"post it up"
"I'll take the handspan and 3 on the wire to 11"

When JCIN posts that so and so is getting down for 4 dimes getting the orange crush, I would say that this is about as common language as you will find in any real pool room. Not the "upscale" pool rooms with 500 people who all cant draw whitey, but real rooms with matching up and tournaments.

I dont see what the fuss is about. Go to any forum that specializes in something, be it archery or hot rodding cars and you will see slang and commonly used acronyms. *****ing about it just makes you look ignorant of the culture, too lazy to learn or just in a bad mood.

thats exactly how i feel. The subculture and all that it comes with is one of the best things about pool.

pool players, steak horses, rail birds etc. have their language and if you dont understand it your a square, it took me along time to learn pool speak years ago. When I got out of pool I still talked like that and my girl friend at the time wa amazed at all the different names for money-like calling a $100 a "Yard" or a "Snap" or a $5 a "Fin" or a "small nickle" or a $50 "a half a hundred" etc. its deeply inbedded in pool and thats just part of being a player, steak horse, rail bird etc. Personally I love it, its a great subculture that isnt politically correct or conforming to the rest of society like the soccer mom's. Were a different breed and i'm proud of that.

Running-man,
If not understanding every nuance of someone's conversation bothers you so greatly, it would be advisable for you never to visit ... possibly rural Alabama.

Why did you have to go there Willie? You could have used Brooklyn, Jersey, all of Louisiana.

I tried to give you rep for this, but I must spread more around.

I personally think JCIN is one of the smarter AZ posters and has a lot of good to say on a lot of topics. Based on his thread about shane vs. scooter, I dont really see how he made it that hard to understand.

JCIN WROTE:
"Shane is giving Scooter the 4 out for $100 a game right now on Ustream."

The only slang going on here is "4 out for $100 a game"

If you break it down, Im sure you can figure out what "$100 a game" means, that that just leaves you with "4 out". Simply put, Scooter can play the 4, 5, 6, 7, & 8 ball the same way you would normally play the 9. So, if he makes a combo on the 6, he wins. If he sinks the 4 ball, he wins. Its really pretty simple if you just think about it instead of posting up hate.

Why is it that whenever a gambling match up happens whoever posts about it always uses so much slang that unless you actually know the people you won't really know what the F they are talking about? Like JCIN posting about scooter, like ok fine, we get it, your in the know about "action" and thats really great, but seriously just post what is happening like a professional and not some kid on a school ground announcing to the lunch room that a fight broke out between butch and little wolfie. Im sick of that crap.

Are you kidding? I love his posts and the action comments, I actually get my 'FIX' so to say from reading them. If you dont want to read them, I would not click on them anymore.
Justin,
dont change a thing man..

I'm Never Too Busy To Help Someone

Well, I don't want to defend RunoutalloverU, but I don't think that he was complaining about the 'pool jargon' of dimes, post, orange crush, the snap, etc. as he was complaining that some people want to appear more hip or 'in the know', by referring to the players as "Tater", "Scooter", Nappy Head, Slim, Bones, Two-Finger or some such.

I think that he would prefer Justin or Chad to use the players names like Buddy "The Rifleman" Hall, Eric "Fatboy" Peterson and not force readers to be on the inner circle in order to figure out whats going on.

( or, I could be completely wrong as usual..... imo ) :)

I'm guessing we can thank the road players for this and those who travel very long distances to play in tournaments and attend shows. That's the kinds of things you need to keep a language alive and evolving.

Wow, look at that, I actually learned something somewhat useful in a general ed class.

Or could this be sour grapes? After all Justin is living a life (at least on the surface) that we would all love to experience. Just a question.

now you're doing it too

Who the heck are these Justin and Chad guys? :D :D :D

I dont like the so called pool "lingo" I mean you know Its ok, but this is a new age, and I think this is highly overrated in anycase..

Spend your time learning to play the game, dont worrie about the "lingo" its not important... So if someone picks at you because you cant understand what they are speaking, take your money and walk away, you will be surprised at how quickly they can instantly speak English..

See my theory is that pool players are just hungry all the time so thats why you got cheese, jelly beans, cabbage the orange crush and other food and beverage related names:D
And obviously I'm not in the know

I like that one. Ok to the topic at hand. Theres got to be other things to start a thread on. This as far as I know is a pool forum. I see no problem with using the slang of action in a post. As afore mentioned this is the same talk you hear in a real pool hall. Something else that bothers me is your jab at JCIN. I do not know JCIN personally but he seems like a stand up guy. I think this forum would be better for all if personal attacks stopped. Unless seriously warranted. Like someone not paying of after a bet, or not delivering a product after being paid. Well thats my two cents.

Pool lingo is nothing!:D....try being the newby in a group of surfers!....dude, sup, whats it doin?...outside is crackin, but the push is killin it on the second bar. cool, lets hit it quick, what stick you bringin? uhhh maybe the tanker, or the fish, but its not good enough for the potato chip....ok man see you at the sand lot for a session...k bro, can you pick me up? I got no denero for gas. :D

and thats just before you get in the water....there are 5057486798 ways to describe the waves to another "bro".....glassy, chunky, peaky, washed out, crankin, fat, flat, glassy, epic, lame, fun, pushin, dropping, hollow, crackin, top2bottom,

then theres weather prediction....I'm not going into it now, but if you need to know ANYTHING about the weather, ask a surfer!;)

my favorite surfing description is when i used to call the wave report here in south florida and the recorded message would say its "Victory at Sea" or "a Washing Machine" (rough choppy surf days). The surf subculture is pretty cool, theres really not alot to not like about waves, sun, and brown bodies barely covered up.

I'll be quick to admit that I am also not up to speed on all the pool hall lingo. I can figure or guess at most of them though!!

Maybe someone could start a new thread or sticky with the definitions??

:)

Russ.....
