I had a friend bring over his brand new lathe made by Todd Shultz (tsp&b)! VERY, VERY NICE lathe for the money! The reversible motor runs so smooth and quiet, really nice power switch, clean and quick foot pedal plug, lathe bed, rack/pinion is all very smooth and well put together. Bed fits standard Taig equipment, so there's lots of additions you can make in the future to this lathe. The 3 jaw chuck steady rest is really nice addition and comes with the lathe package.

Todd also has several tools for sale and is a great guy to talk to and deal with!

Best of luck Todd- GREAT lathe & nice price!

Helpful Guy , Good guy to deal with. Nice stuff too.

Thanks for your review. I've been reading up on lathes lately because I'm mulling over getting a repair lathe. Of course, first I must decide whether I want to put in the time to make it worthwhile.

Todd's lathe is very upgradable, and IMOP some of the best money I've ever spent.

I can honestly say I was semi nervous about choosing Todd's top lathe over the hightower of the same specs.

I can now say that my fears were of no consequence.

Pro's of tsp&b lathe

-very light
-super easy to transport (whole thing fits in my trunk of car)
-variable speed is the nuts
-reversable switching is also sweet

-easy to modify cross slide/tool post to slide free for cutting tapers with bar/tension spring

-Anodized aluminum bed is SUPER SWEET! Very easy to keep clean
Epoxy/CA and other finish products don't stick to the bed. Can be removed with a light scraping tool or just a push of your finger sometimes, without damaging the finish.
(todd this really is one of the great parts of this lathe)

I would also recommend adding a 60 deg live center to the package. And also champhering the edges of your collets.

I also HIGHLY Recommend you to stop using the red plastic material for your collets. If you don't make sure the chucks are snug at all times, the material will stain the wood red.

This is more of a problem with the self centering chuck/s. Of course they are not going to be hold fast like whats found on a big logan lathe or something lol, but possibly adding some teeth to the chuck on the inside would help? I will be doing this probably this week with my dremel tool and then re-boring the centers, hopefully giving it just a tad more gripping power.

Honestly the lathe is more than wonderful and I have no real complaints by any means. Those one or two changes to the package would just put it even more over the top IMOP and I'm sure customers like myself would not mind any extra charge incurred by these changes.

When I'm done with it, the lathe will be fully capable of everything to indexing points from cutting compound tapers. I am not sure I'f I will add a live feed to it as for cutting threads since I'm trying to keep it light as possible. (It's going to be a TSP&B Baby-Tower Delux Grey Ghost edition lol)
But I'll end up changing the L/R handle and carriage travel so that I can manually cut full lengths smoother, by way of more travel per turn of the L/R feed knob.

I figure that once I'm done I'll be under 2k all together with everything but the live feed for threading and such....which IMOP is very very stong.

Thanks again todd for offering up such a good product thats easily modifyable at such a great price.

tap tap tap,

I agree. And todd's support is great too, between emailing him for upgrades to my lathe he has been nothing but helpful. I was unsure about getting his or waiting for a hightower, but so far i have made my money back in repairs alone, built a jump cue, purple heart shaft, and done ring work for a sneaky that i am building.

All in all it is great and Todd offers great service for his machines.

Not trying to hijack but if anyone wants info on how to build and do the modifications, or would like me to build a set of adjustable taper bars for the tsp&b lathe then let me know. Can also do them for any other machine, just would have to work out details and measurments.

Mine should be done soon and I will offer a couple up for sale at a very reasonable price to those interested. (especially since apache has given me so much spare time now lmfao...basterds:frown:)

Its guys like todd that are helping to better the industry of the pool world, thanks to all those that support him and thank those like him that support us back with their products.

all the best,

GG, I bought those red collets from another guy who is well know on this forum. I did not like them either so I just gave them away along with the white ones I include with the lathe... it was either give them away or through them away. Guess I should have thrown them away. Thank you for all your suggestions! One thing I have learned is that there is no end to the improvements and up-grades. Thanks again!! Todd

This is very true...and you've provided a platform to do so with, in good fashion if i may say so.

The collets were no big deal, i threw a junk shaft on it when i first got it and it did what it did so i caught it b/f it caught me.

One thing I just remembered and recommend you do that buyers will like is to chamfer the inside corners of your "white" :p collets. So they don't marr the wood or finish. That was actually the first thing I did with the lathe when I got it was chamfer the corners and make a few collets of my own. That would make your collets that you offer just great, and its thankfully a super easy fix by you to produce a total package thats just that much better all things being accounted for.

cant say it enough.....thanks again brother!

Yep, once again Joey, you are right.
Just thinking how easy it would be to attach an index plate to that.

Thanks!! Those are some excelent suggestions! Where do I send the checks??? I will incorporated the chamfered edges asap. Joey,I have some other things I am working on with the steadyrest but I really had not thought about making an indexing head out of it. As I mentioned before there is no limit to the additions and improvements. The only limits are TIME and imagination.... and I could use more of both!!
Thanks a Million!!
Todd

How do I find Mr. Shultz (sp?) and his wonderful lathe? I've googled shultz, schultz + lathe and come up with nothing. Does he, or his company, have an online presence?

thanks,

loooooook up!!

He is much closer than you think.

Its the guy that posted above you. tsp&b

I do not have a web site yet... Just cant seem to find the time to get one put togather... busy filling orders. Here are links to the listings I have posted here on AZ.

Basic "beginner"... Good http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=173278

Basic with 4 ft bed... Better http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=182197

Professional... http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=175012

I am adding a second steadyrest and a couple collets to the "basic with 4 foot bed" model. If you have any questions, please just let me know. You can PM me here or email me at: jtoddshultz@yahoo.com or cal me on my cell (usually available week days between 9 AM to 6 PM Central Time) 217-320-3404, or my home phone is 217-532-3410.

To help make things simpler for Todd, I've added a "Cue Repair Equipment" page on my website, www.zimsrack.com.

I will be adding more details in the near future, along with additional equipment and parts.

Thanks,
Zim
