Think the same about the Logo. Looks very similar to Searing.

But the tulipwood/ebony SP looks nice. Is this a cue components blank from Barringer?
 
I'm sorry for those who don't like the s on my cues however since I started making cues in the year 2000 there are about 300-400 cues with the letter s throughout the world and there is no national patent on the letter s, however to satisfy and make everyone happy I will continue to use the letter s on the butt plates but I will sign my last name SLY and date the cues between the points.That's the best I will do.

No this is not a blank from cue components this fullsplice blank was maid by FRANK HECK
 
There may not be a patent on "S" but it is still doesn't seem quite right to mimic someone else's logo so to speak. It just ain't cool.

He's already tooled for the 'S', and he's already stated that he is going to sign his name between the points.....I think that will make it pretty clear. Besides, Dennis rarely does these types of cues....that is my understanding anyways. Jeez Louise, give the guy a break!

Sly signing his cue is all well and good, but with the amount of scam artists out there, all that needs to be done is someone buying a few of Sly's cues with the "S" logo (and signature), sand off the finish along with the signature and re-finish the cue and what do you have? A Searing copy that could fetch a few grand on e-bay. Dennis never signs a cue unless he makes it from scratch. This is where the problem lies. Paul

Just becasue a cue has an 'S' on the buttcap, does not mean that I am automatically going to assume it's a Searing....if I am interested, I am going to email Dennis and I am going to ask him. If someone is going to go to all the trouble to sand a signature off and refinish....then why wouldn't the same individual just add a buttcap with an 'S' on it and do the same thing...with any similarly constructed cue? If you are relying on a buttcap, or bumper, for that matter, as definitive identification of a cuemaker's cue...you're just looking for trouble. In the case of Dennis' cues....there are aspects of his build process that tends to pretty immediately tell you if it is one of his or not.

In the case of Leon's cues.....well, he is not trying to pass them off as anything but what they are...his cues...he's proud of what he is building. If he has been using the 'S' in the buttcap of his cues in his neck o' the woods, then he has already been establishing it for his locale for a while now. The locals have come to know it as a indentifier of Leon's cues. You have to remember that most every cuemaker got their start at a regional level...even the greats. The internet has made it possible for a cuemaker to try and to reach beyond that.

It really is a matter of caveat emptor....and one doing one's own homework, when purchasing a cue, particularly on the secondary market. I find it much easier, and more gratifying, to just deal with the cuemaker directly when looking for a particular maker's cue. Yeah, it may take longer, but you'll get what you pay for, and generally, no monkey-business.

you have THAT right .... Someone ain't gonna be happy. Specially the guy down the road that buys it thinking it IS :eek: a Searing. Cues do look good though except for that ...

I agree. the hole thing can be on and on .As Lisa said Leon isnt trying to pass he's cues offfor anothers. he does great work and I hope i will get to he's leval someday. Jeff

I posted before reading all the way through. Does not sound like anyone is going to change anything other than signing between the points, and someone already pointed out the shortfall in that. Ah well. I do know of other cue makers that made sure before they ever marked a cue that they were not using initials or a layout that might be mistaken for someone elses. And the cues still look good.

Lol, Doc...no harm, no foul. :) I would think that as Leon gains popularity outside his locale, he may wish to re-think his decision, and add the 'LY' to the 'S'...but it seems to be working for him currently. Instead of 'sneaky' petes, they could be 'sly' petes...Lol.

Also, please note that he said he has been using the 'S' since 2000....that's pushing almost 8 years now......and Dennis' following wasn't then, as it is now, nationally. I am sure, if the timing had been different, that Leon may have opted for a different approach to his logo.

Lisa...thinks crooks are gonna be crooks no matter what is on the buttcap.

Upon some reflection...

Since the internet is making access to your cues more widespread, and to avoid the possibility of dishonesty...as it has become more prevelant in the past year, especially...that you may wish to reconsider using, at the very least, the same style of 'S' as Dennis is known for.

Also....I would think that you would like to establish you own identity with your cues...since you have a wider potential client base. By either changing the style of font of the 'S' or just going with 'SLY'...it would decrease the potential for any fraudulent activity by those nefarious characters who would be looking to make a buck off of another cuemaker's hard-earned reputation...in this case, Dennis Searing.

sly sorry to start this firestorm. i didnt think u were trying to copy searings cues. i just feel you should get proper credit for your beautiful cues and the "S" is very close.

also there are scumbags that will sell your cues as searings.

im sure dennis will make whatever is ordered and it could easily be mistaken...

the sig is a good idea or maybe a different style "S"

with that said beautiful cues and keep up the good work... sry pal
