U.S Open Escrowed by Accu-Stats

Deducting 30 percent of winnings from foreign players and paying it to the IRS for them?
Do other venues in other countries do the same? I don't get that. They've invested thousands for a CHANCE to win. I don't get it and I don't like it

Japan Open withholds 20% for foreign players. I believe even the China Open withholds less than 30%.

The IRS requires 30% withholding for foreign nationals unless the US has a special tax treaty with their country and then the withholding amount may be different or 0. My understanding is that if you don't want to wade through tax treaties -- and they are all different -- the IRS will accept 30% from everyone.

Player Refunds

Just a quick reply to itsfroze:

Mark Cantrill asked me this question and I have seen it in an earlier post.

The SIMPLE answer is:

There are two sources of funds Accu-Stats is collecting,
1) the $1000.00 entry fee per player
2) the $75,000.00 added money from Barry.

These are separate and distinct.

As I said to Mark yesterday over the phone, it is WAY to early in the year to discuss ALL the possible permutations that could occur between now and October.

The July 23rd date is for Barry's added money only.

As regards the players, the important thing to note is the "ultimate disposition" of the players' entry fees.

It is this simple:
If the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship occurs in ANY possible way, the entry fees will be paid out in prize money.

If the U.S. Open does NOT occur, or if any player whose entry fee Accu-Stats has recieved, decides to withdraw for any reason prior to the start of the event, we will issue a refund check to that player for that entry fee.

I hope this settles the conjecture.

This is GREAT NEWS! I was seriously starting to worry about the viability of the US Open. The well documented list of atrocities was mounting so something like this had to be done. Barry gets to do whatever it is he does and the Players get paid. I say WIN/WIN

Excellent unambigious response. Thanks for clearing this up.

I would suggest that this be added to the official press releases, because I expect it would give confidence to a lot of players.

so you see their "öut", too?

Yes it's great that Pat is getting involved, but unless he is going to put up what's ever missing from the 75k, nothing has really changed. Come game time, Barry is short on the 75k and only 75 @ $1000...then what? The show must go on anyhow? Barry gets to do one more dog and pony show and Pat gets another year of DVD's to sell from the OPEN.

This format don't work, and hasn't for over 10 years. If Barry doesn't get a short term loan, I see the same old ending. Johnnyt

I've known that this was in the works for a while now and was very supportive of Barry's decision to save his U.S. Open. Thankfully Pat agreed to take on this job and the responsibility that goes with it. On this basis I'm inclined to join my friend Pat in working at this year's Open to make it the best one yet.

Do you cut and paste this same thing every year? :p. Johnnyt

I see what you're saying Johnny but there is one important difference - if BB is short it sounds like it will be disclosed before the event starts rather than during/after the event.

Let's just say you are a "what can go right guy"...and I'm a "what can go wrong guy". :wink:Johnnyt

So Roberta ask Barry to answer this.

If all the added money has not been deposited into Pat's account by the July 23rd date and/or if the WPA pulls their sanction for any reason,
will all players who have already paid their entry fees prior to the July 23rd date get a 100% refund if they so desire ??? This was left quite
vague in the articles, by both Pat and Barry, I was wondering why ?

You answered a lot of other questions, I guess you just missed this one.

PS.
As the players go, I think there's no way that they would send in their entry money early
(prior to July 23rd) without this guarantee, with this events past track record and all the hollow promises, could you blame them ?

From Barry: Your answer is 100% yes as Pat will have all funds but, again, the $75,000.00 added is already completed.

amazing news overall!

I would think the foreign players might have mixed feelings on the 30% witholding

if Barry has always paid eventually I'd probably rather go through him over the 30%

personally, I think the laws that require paying taxes on winnings gathered from pooled monies is wacky in Canada we have no such requirements

kudos to accustats for stepping up here, smart and bold move

From Barry: Any with holdings for foreign players would be returned to them when they file in their country as long as the player didn't make a forturn, which no one does.

Sounds like an Abbott and Costello routine.

But I am ready to send my signed $50 bill to Jay Helfert as soon as Barry confirms.

From Barry: How much free money do you want to give away? PLease up the bet or just be quiet.

Does anyone know ?
Geronimo's check bounced .
SVB was on installment plan. Did he get paid in full yet ?

From Barry: Yes, Geronimo's check has been paid in full as well as everyone else.

But will he post? Because his action is almost as suspect as SC5 at this point...

From Barry: Yes, let's post as much as possible.......a lot.

This is all good news. However, as a VIP seat holder for two years at the open, one year at the Holiday Inn, which was horrible, and the other at the Marriott, which was even worse, I'm not going this year no matter how many lies Barry tells. As they say fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. Here's what I'm going to do.

I'll watch the open on Accu-Stats and then I'll wait for the postmortem reports on AZ afterword. If the reports confirm that this year was better than the previous three then I'll consider re-attending next year. If it turns out to be another Cluster F then I will never go again.

From Barry: Yes, the VIP seating has been not so good but I would like you to pick out your seat or seats to assure you you're fine.

Sounds like all is well.

Just have to figure out how to keep the little monkey shines away from the microphone.

From Barry: Why don't you man up and come this year and I'll bring you out to see who is the real monkey on the mic?

Pat saves the open like a saint...
Maybe we should call this St. Patrick's day ...
..oh wait.

From Barry: I agree "St. Patrick's Day".

I, and most fans and participants, like the US national anthem. As a long time music executive I have to say that your choice of vocalist could be better.

While she stays on key for the most part her pitch goes off and the tonal quality is more geared toward Karaoki night at Q Masters than for an event like this.

That said, I could look past this, but when you take into account your uneccessary blather in the introduction the whole thing becomes tedious.

Maybe a simple "Singing our national anthem.....(singers name here) would be beneficial to the whole experience and make it not seem like a half hour to Nick B and others.

I am sure that those of us who are under the impression that there are more than 2-3 cocktails involved are influenced by the amount of uneccessary time that you spend in front of the camera with microphone in hand going on about your friends and childhood and the endless shuffling of papers and loss of train of thought. It is painful to watch.

That said, I am very happy to see that you have taken the steps that you have to re-energize this event and I wish you well in this endeavour. I am almost convinced to come see it live.

From Barry: Alana Springsteen, our singer, just moved to Nashville and has huge successes in store for her.

A VIP spectator for 8-10 years -maybe more, who was screwed about half the time. I finally tossed in the towel when my last 'VIP Seat' was beyond the table legs and i was 65% in the aisle with only a place at the table to put my left elbow. I hope he enjoyed the extra $180 he got from that move cause it was the last $$ he got from me.

One year the VIP area was so overrun with encroachers who were kneeling behind every seat, i couldnt even fight my way to my OCCUPIED seat for the finals. Other years i was supposed to have an aisle seat only to have the aisle completely vanish in a reconfiguration before i got there. Nothing like that ever occurred with my VIP seats at the DCC.

From Barry: Now in twice the size ballroom all seats will be very wide for all so come and enjoy. If you do not like the seating honestly I'll give you your money back as well as your hotel stay.

2-3 cocktails? What's in those cocktails? The entire top shelf?

If it truly only takes 2-3 cocktails to be three sheets to the wind, then perhaps he'd be better off cutting it down to 1.

From Barry: FYI, I appreciate your concerns about my having 2/3 cocktails a day which I could take or leave it alone altogether. By the way, I have been clean from other substances since 2002.

This is so nice!

I'm still not going back.

Brian in VA

From Barry: I'm sorry you're not coming back, what can I do to change your mind?

Watchez already has some questions lined up for the interview.

Me? Just tell Pat THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT HE HAS DONE FOR POOL and continues to do.

JoeyA

From Barry: Again, thank you for your kind words.

Can I post money for a bet on the post money on the escrow money not being posted?

Lou Figueroa
or sumthin' like that

From Barry: Yes, all you want to lose.

So Barry has plenty of time to read AND RESPOND to comments today but when the Vietnamese player didn't get paid (along with others), he had no idea what was going on and was MIA from responding for days on end. Interesting.

And I am not rich like Barry who owns a 2.5 million dollar pool room. I work at McDonalds and $50 is a day and a half of wages for me. We can bet $50 and post it with Jay Helfert. $75,000 in escrow 90 days out from the tourney. No matter what the excuses such as a snow storm, his dog ate his bank card, the wire service was closed, Roberta forgot to do it. 90 days out from the tourney. Just say go. I'll send Jay a $50 bill and sign it. Barry can do the same.

From Barry: I bet your pardon, the player from Vietnam has been paid in full.

From Barry

From Barry: Why can't we all just get along? Say whatever you wish but also ask yourself, who on planet earth never gave up regardless of 3-4 hurricanes, 9/11/01 attack on America and much more losing a lot of money for many years. But instead of those posting on forums with negativity, why don't you put on a tournament so you can see for yourself? Is there no appreciation for all the good and good years I ask?

The entire $75,000.00 added funds have already been arranged to be in Pat's account at least 90 days out so those of you who wish to bet why don't you bet much more and we can post in Pat's bank. I'll take "all bets".

Rober-Taaaaa?!

I'd imagine it is because he could get away it.

Glad to see what should be the USA's premier event finally drag itself up to 2007. More accurately: I will be glad to see it...

Yes?
