U.S. Open Tidbits and Trivia

Gabe ...

Gabe does not like 'Babyface' and is embarrased by it, hence
Gabe the Babe.

Gabe had to be 27 or 28 when he won the Open.

Mike Sigel won the U.S. Open in 1976, 1980, and 1983. Born in 1953 -- I don't know what date -- he may have been 23 years old.

Earl Strickland, a five-time U.S. Open champion, won his first title in 1984. Born June 8, 1961, The Pearl shined brightly at a very young 23 years of age.

Anybody who knows when Mike Sigel was born, this will provide the answer as to who was the YOUNGEST U.S. Open champion. It's between Sigel and Strickland.

Corey Deuel also won the US Open when he was 23, his birthday was less than a month later, but he was 23 when he won it.

You all collectively got EVERYBODY except "Handsome."

Though most know him as "Hippy Jimmy" Reid, he was fondly labeled as Jimmy "Handsome" Reid for his good looks when he won the U.S. Open in 1985.

"Handsome" was a nickname given to Danny Jones decades before...he was also known as "Dirty" Danny Jones. Guess it depended what side of the rail you were on. I was always under the impression that Jimmy Reid's nickname was share with another Jimmy {Marrino?} from up north...it was "Hippy".

We have a three-way tie for YOUNGEST player to ever win the U.S. Open: Corey Deuel, Mike Sigel, and Earl Strickland.

Corey's birthday is November 27, 1977, and he won the U.S. Open Championship in 2001.

Earl Strickland's FIRST out of FIVE U.S. Open Championships was won in 1984, and his birthday is June 8, 1961.

Mike Sigel's FIRST out of THREE U.S. Open Championships was won in 1976. For purposes of this U.S. Open trivia, it would be nice to know Mike Sigel's exact birthday to determine who was the youngest ever to win this title. I read on the BCA website that he was born in 1953, but that is the only info I have been able to find.

All three gentlemen, though, were 23 years old. Amazing feat for such young whippersnappers. :)

Knowing Sigel's birthday would reveal WHO was actually the youngest! :p

And even though Corey Deuel is labeled as "Prince of Pool" for the U.S. Open purposes, I do remember hearing Larry Lisciotti's name associated with that fond reference. :p

Jim Marino, I think is from Pittsburgh.

Jim Marino and Jimmy Reid seem to have a few things in common.

I haven't seen Jim Marino on the tournament trail in recent times. I did visit his pool room in Pittsburgh over 20 years ago. I remember they had movie theater or bus seats for the railbirds which I thought was a novel idea at the time.

Brandy. I hadn't thought of that. :D

Let's try to do the math.....

According to the Billiard Congress HoF info Mike was
1. inducted at age 35
2. won the US Open in 1975
3. 1989 - 1975 = 14 years

Therefore, Mikes induction age (35) minus 14 years of playing = 21 years old

They also say he turned Pro at age 20 & he says he won his first pro tournament - the US Open - So I would say he was more like 21 or 22 years old.

We might have to call him! lol

That is right, El'nino, and Mike Sigel won the first U.S. Open in 1976, and then followed it up with 1980 and 1983.

As CSSuits states, if you go to the BCA website and click on the Hall of Fame link, it gives a brief bio for Mike Sigel, to include that he was born in 1953.

So 1953 to 1976 is 23 years. However, without knowing Sigel's birthday, it is difficult to discern how old he was when he competed and won the U.S. Open in 1976. He may have been 22 years old, depending on the exact date of the Open and what day his birthday falls on.

I was standing next to Barry & Brady Behrman when Corey won and Brady said to his dad "Corey's the youngest ever to win and his dad said no Mike was. How right Barry was I don't know.

Hey JAM, it was nice seeing you at Drexeline last weekend.... see ya again next week at THE BIG SHOW. I hope Keith turns it into a circus again like he did in 03. He made that the best Open ever. He had the whole building in stitches all week.

Nicknames in pool have been occurring ever since I can remember.

Each of the U.S. Open champions have been fondly known by the below-referenced nicknames. Some are easy; some are not! Can you name all of them? :D

The Scorpion
Rebel
The Rifleman
Captain Hook
The Kentucky Colonel
The Magician
Rocket
The Miz
The Kaiser
Prince of Pool
Praise the Lord
Spanish Mike
Young Hoppe
St. Louis Louie
Handsome
The Pearl
Little David
Captain Hook

Did they ever come up with a nickname for the 2004 U.S. Open Champion Gabe Open?

JAM

Not knowing my US Open history well at all,

I will venture out and say the youngest was Nick Varner
and oldest is Buddy Hall. (just wild guessing here).

Varner??? He looked like he was 70 when he won the USOpen.

There were 3 or 4 tournaments that Barry Berhman ran prior to the US Open titled event in 1976. Mike Sigel won 2 of them. So that give Mike 5 wins (same as Earl) for the Barry Berhman major events.

Mike was either 20 or 21 when he won Barry's events before they were called the US Open.

The convention center where the US Open is held, was built in part, because of the US Open history of great attendance figures. Prior to the convention center being built, the Holiday Inn Greenbriar held the event. Prior to the HI involvement, QMasters was the venue.

You'll have to ask Barry for the dates of these changes to the venue.

97' was the 1st US Open to be held in the new conference center (won by Earl)
