Ultimate Pool USA

no i think the main reason is to keep the audience involved and inside the mind of the players, much like the way poker put the card in the hole camera cam and gave the crowd something to watch-

cards, pool, baseball- it’s all boring
but everybody understands in the ninth inning when the count is 3-2 in a tie game what is going on

same in NFL, two minute warning, down by 5, the team has to drive the length of the field for a TD or lose the game
Most of the tables in play don’t have much of an audience.

I absolutely love the fact that the 30-second shot clock is in use. I wish all pool tournaments could find a way to implement this.

What I don't like is the time limit for the match. I don't like that the player in the lead can literally stall (by taking the whole 30 seconds on shots that could be pocketed in 10 seconds or less). Stalling to win is no good for pool. There should be a particular number of games a player must win before the match is over. JMHO

but after half the match time has gone the shot clock is shortened to 15 seconds.. makes it harder to stall

From their mouths, the main reason was to speed the game up. That certainly adds to the entertainment value as well.

Bob, you don't think the brisk pace is because of the rules? The shot and match clocks, I mean. ...
I don't consider those game rules. Those are event/tournament/organization add-ons, like a dress code or seeding method. Clocks can be added to any match in any discipline.

The Snooker Shoot Out is a ranking event on the pro snooker tour. Each match is a single frame. Here are part of the clock rules:
  • Every frame lasts a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • There is a shot clock. For the first 5 minutes of the match, players have 15 seconds per shot, but for the last 5 minutes this is reduced to 10 seconds.
And that is on a 12-foot snooker table. It's quite exciting. First prize is like $50,000 for playing seven frames of snooker.

Also makes it harder to figure out the proper shot and everything that needs to go into that shot. Sloppy pool starts showing up.
I don't hate the Ultimate Pool format, I just pefer a good ol' nine or ten-ball race to 11 with a 30 second shot clock.

Figuring it out is half the battle. For example watching Archer with a blank stare was bad.
