Ultra skin tip problem?

I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels this way.. I've keep my mouth shut about this for a long time now as I've read so many people comparing them to Black Kamui's...
Ive tried them several times now, and I'm NOT saying they're not a quality tip, but in no way, outside of the color of them, do they play like a Black Kamui.. I bought some because of so many people saying that they play like a Black Kamui, but they don't. A better comparison IMO would be to an Onyx, or a Blackheart. All good tips, but Black Kamui's play much much different than the other 3 mentioned..

you are not alone

Sounds like it got overheated during install.
I've put on a ton of these tips without a problem.
The ultra skins are a quality tip at a great price point.
They aren't kamuis.
There is a difference between the brands for sure,
And I don't try to push Kam black players into ultra skins.
I do reccomend ultras to my customers that use moori, and every other brand besides kamui,
I've found that kamui players don't want to try a new tip, even if I charge 10$ less for it.
I'm not sure how many hundreds of ultras I've installed, I can count on one hand with fingers left over how many players weren't happy with the way they play.
With the amount of tips that Tom has out there, I'm sure there has to be a bad one or two,
But have you sent him an email?

I really don't care if he responds or not. Just thought it a bit strange.
I cut the tip down a bit and reshaped it, and will try it out. If I still don't like it i will have it replaced.
We are not talking about a lot of money here.

I'm not claiming to be the world's expert on this,so this is just MY opinion.

I've tried the Kamui Black M and H on my own cue,as well as the Ultra S,M,H,and HH.

I bought a few Kamui and installed them at tournaments. I've installed about 60 of the Ultras so far.

There is so little difference as far as what I encounter during installation that it's insignificant. What I see is something similar to what was already mentioned, that they are drier, meaning less moisture present in the leather.

As far as their playing characteristics,it's like this. I can't really tell a difference between the Kamui and the Ultra M and H. Both are excellent products. Zero quality problems from either, even with dramatically more Ultras being sent out. Not a single customer complaint.

However, the Ultra will win every single time in my area due to price alone. I tell customers they can spend 20.00 or 40.00 and wind up with the same thing, and the 20.00 gets chosen every time. Tommy D.

Interesting comparison... I'll likely order some ultras and do some testing on hardness and COR as well as changes over a month.. SO far the Kamui black is the only layered tip I have tested that tries to fight back against compaction.. I didn't know the ultras were treated like the Blacks or My Outsville Ki-Techs.... should be neat to see how they test out.......

Chris

I fixed the tip. My tip guy left it full size. He thinks I'm a cheapskate and wanted to get the most out of the tip.
I cut a bit off it and reshaped it. I played with it today and it played just fine.
I use a lot of extreme english and power draw and I did not miscue once. I also use nothing but Triangle chalk.
I think I should get a rebate for the material i had to cut off.:D

There has been a write up and comparison data done already in the cm section. It was very in depth and involved dissecting and microscopes.

Its been recommended to cut this tip down till only 5 or 6 layers are left when new.

I don't see good enough to count layers. I just took out my pocket knife and sliced it down and shaped it.
and still have all 10 fingers

I'll give you an in-store credit of one dollar for each unused layer, 50-cents if chalked.
I'm sure Tom will want to perform a forensic analysis on each layer before he reimburses me for 2 1/2 layers of tip.

This was my first thought as well. Dull tooling/utility blade causes too much heat. Any tip would fail under those circumstances. Not saying this was your cause, just the one the is most often the cause in my experience.

I've tried a couple and in my opinion they are OK and you get what you pay for but I have to laugh a little when people compare them to kamui tips...IMO there is a reason kamuis cost more its because they are better. Regardless if they are 10 bucks or so more than an ultra skin your getting what you pay for... It's like comparing a Hyundai sonata with an E class Benz... And we're talking about 10-12 bucks or so not thousands of dollars.
I do not agree with the "cost" analogy... not an apples to apples comparison

a Kamui tip costs around $20 from the retailer. they paid the wholesaler somewhere around $10 and the wholesaler got the tip from Kamui for around $5

with the ultra skin tip you are merely bypassing the wholesaler and retailer and buying directly from the manufacturer

I have had several "returns" on kamui tips (e.g. "take this POS off and put something else on"); I have had one ultraskin tip delaminate, reason unknown and player still swears by them; numerous problems with Samsara jump break tips delaminating half way through their expected life. so far, Moori and triangle have been pretty reliable for layered & pressed tips

measureman, good to hear you resolved your tip issue and like the way it plays.

I agree that's their "premium pricing" policy to blame. You are correct saying that more expensive tip is not necessarily better than a cheaper one.
