Unbelievable luck just before expo (very long)

I suspect that this is a good lesson to teach you the golden rule of gambling: Never gamble with money you can't afford to lose. Scam or not, had you been able to afford to lose, you probably would not have found yourself in such a tight spot.

I hope everything works out for you.

Good Rolls,

Very true, which brings up the predicament of people who play this game for a living in order to have food on their plate. If had lost, I surely would of either not gone to Valley Forge, or been forced to borrow money like I am now, but I was willing to wrisk losing in order to get enough money to feel comfortable on the trip. I did not however plan on losing even if I won, like what happened. :( Lesson learned the hard way.

Two questions---the banks are open, have you called his bank to verify funds yet? Or are you gonna sit at the computer all day.

and since someone else brought it up, how old are you?

I'm 20, and I'm at work right now, sitting at a desk in front of a computer, so to answer you're question, no. I'm leaving in an hour to goto VF. I will call his bank as soon as I leave work.

I work at National City Bank and I'm at work right now. I'd be more than happy to call and erfiry the funds for you.

Shoot me a PM if you would like.

Call Now!!

Why wait till after work? In less time it took to type even one of these responses you could already have the bad news. ACCOUNT CLOSED, Checks stolen etc...... Reach over, run the bogus check through the shredder at work and move on. You'll feel better.:)

lol, the check is at home. I was planning on stopping somewhere to try to cash it other than my bank on the way to PA. I'll call it in after work. Thanks for the advice.

Shooting air

Um. I would try to cash the check but would not be surprised if it is hot. He shot air at you and then hustled you with the check. Most scams have an element of greed for the other person (the sucker)- Here, you got the $25 tip for taking the check.

Lesson learned. Could happen to anyone. Have fun at the expo.

That's exactly the way I feel about the situation. I'll still get by at VF if I don't ever see a cent from it. It still sucks and I'm still retarded tho :P

I'm off to the expo, be back Sunday. Good luck to everyone who's going, and hope to meet some people there.

Peace,

Mitch.

What about giving him props for trying to expose a scammer. If I see a black guy claiming to be an accountant trying to pay someone with a check I'll make sure they call the bank before he leaves.

I worked in the grocery biz for 15 years and saw a lot of bad checks. The easiest way to try and see if its legit is if there is a phone number on the check call it and ask for the person who's name is on the check. Most of the time if its bad its a wrong number. Of course there has to be a number on the check. :-)

Sorry about your trouble. I've done the same thing before for about the same amount, as a matter of fact. By the way that fellow must have been Scott Rabon, a pretty good player. He just keeps playing and slowly improving over the last twenty years. I think that he also got into moving, covering and setting up pool tables.

MY Check Is Good... I Swear

Well, I've been around the block enough times to make a rut and it's been my experience that the MORE a person talks, the less likely it is that any of it is true.

It's like watching COPS. A person is on parole, with a gun and drugs in their stolen car and they're driving around a known drug area with one headlight and no tail lights. They're surprised when the cops pull them over 'for no reason' and they begin some long 'explanation', while ending every sentence with "I wouldn't lie to you."

The guy that you played had a least a half a dozen "WARNING ! Scam Artist At Work" lights flashing on him. My grandfatherly advice is, "suspect EVERYONE and 'sometimes' you'll be wrong."

Doug
( NEXT ? Now serving #423. #423 ? OK, #424........ #424 ? )

( btw, NEVER accept a check from someone that says, "I wouldn't write you a bad check, would I?". Anyone that adds that caveat is LYING.... imo )

lifes lessons

When I was about 18 I played alot of pool and hustled
up enough money to support my addictions at the time .
To make a long story short I met a women who was in
her mid 20's at a hall one night close to Carolina beach .
She had long legs and long black hair and could play pretty
well .Well she flirted with me alot and gambled with me alot
until she had everything I had including a cue .It was a good thing
we did not wear the same size pants ;-)So I quit playing pool
and gambling after that .I wish I had not quit pool just the
drugs ,alcohol, and gambling .So now I got clean and sober
about 18 months after that . I started playing pool again
about 2 years ago .I have only played in leauges and small
tournaments though . I guess what I am saying is I am glad
I ran into that woman that night .Life gives us lessons and
we either learn or keep doing the same stuff over and over .
Oh and before I get blasted I am not saying gambling or
alcohol is a bad thing ,I just know I can't do either without
getting out of hand so I have to let it go .Some people do
some people dont, some over do.I over do so I dont. The guy
who started this post is only 20 so it's good he learned this
now rather than later when he has a family or greater responsibilities

sorry for your luck,i guess you learned a lesson BUT its time for you to get a new bank.if they told me it takes MORE than 5 minutes to get a temporary bank card i would tell them to withdraw everything and close my account NOW.

To the OP:

I can understand why everyone is giving you a hard time. People accustomed to gambling at pool are often an unsympathetic bunch when it comes to a "hard luck" story.

Though, in your case, it was not really hard luck. I mean,,,, Dude... He offered a check to pay off a gambling debt, then wanted to borrow money off you.

Really, there's not much more to say. Some people just have the knack for getting taken advantage of themselves. At no point in my life would I ever have let someone who just paid me by check borrow cash.

Now, on to the future. Smorg's advice was good. Don't trust anyone when it comes to money. Heck, I barely trust my family when it comes to money.

Trust no one.life changes NOT from day to day but minute to minute.IF someone played a person in the past it doesn't mean much,it's what is going to happen now.Cash is the ONLY "talker".you want to gamble on a game then both POST the cash before while your negotiating.

In God we trust; all others must post cash.
