Has anyone had the ferrules crack on universal smart shaft, what material are they?I got one last week and will pick up one tonight,i dont know what to put on.

After replacing the tip on a few...it makes you wonder how long until they all crack. They are cheap plastic and very thin walled uncapped. Not the best they could of used...very possibly the worst.

I have!!!!

 I had the "Smart" shaft for a month and needed the ferule reset, then a few months later it cracked. I just started using my old shaft after that and have kept the Universal in my case.

They have what's called the XTC Ferrule. Is that anything special or can you replace them with any material used for ferrules?

Like ANY shaft...it can be replaced with a quality ferrule of your choice.

if you bought the shaft thru any reputable dealer, they can get it fixed or replaced, as needed........

the XTC ferrule was originally sold thru Atlas, but was sold out to the mfg of the smartshaft. I have been breaking with one for a year, with no problems,,,,,,,,contact your dealer......j

I asked Mr. Stroud about the ferrule on these shafts, He said if the ferrule is changed to something other than, it changes the hit, I also asked about having access to the ferrules, (No response), so it might do well that if you play with the smart shaft, BUY two, just in case one cracks.

I was very curious why they used such a soft, thin walled ferrule and then left it uncapped. Recipe for damage.
Like Mr. Webb says...if you are going to play with a Smart shaft...it'd be smart to buy two.;)

$$$ ???

Can any of you steer me in the right direction for purchasing these shafts?

Is Cue and Case the only distributor?

What do they cost new, the RS and LS?

Adapters?

Thanks in advance; happy cueing!

Because it's a lightweight material to reduce end-mass.
Just like Predator.
Joey~Would rather shoot with a permanent ferrule even if it has little more weight and better hit ~

smartshaft

I designed the Smartshaft to be a low squirt shaft.
Part of the design was a high modulus ferrule. That simply means that it will deform easily when it hits the cueball and will return to its original shape quickley.
To produce low squirt it is necessary to also reduce mass. That is why the thin wall design and no cap.
From a playing standpoint the results are clear. It plays better than any other shaft on the market.
I have been using one for over three years with no problem.
I advise people not to break with the shaft and to glue the adapter in.
Everything is a trade off. For high performance AKA "low squirt" you have to sacrifice some reliability.
Predator has had nothing but trouble with their ferrules.
The Smartshaft has far fewer problems.
I will make the ferrules available thru Atlas.

Bill Stroud

Thanks for the comment Bill, the guy at cue and cushion said they were available at atlas but i could not find them.

well, if i have to replace a ferrule once in a while to get the benefits of the universal smart shaft i think that's acceptable. i have only recently started using mine but i am already very impressed with the hit and playability. my question is that the ad states the ferrules have a lifetime warranty, so if one cracks, what is the correct procedure? if you make the ferrule available thru atlas i assume that a competent cue repair shop should be able to change it. thanx for the info and it's great to see mr. stroud post here.

As an early purchaser of the USS, I ran into a few of problems -- one insert broke, they replaced that, and then the shaft split near the bottom. Both times Cue and Case replaced the shaft very quickly, so I'd just contact them:

Cue & Case Connection

BTW, they seem to have the kinks worked out now.

I have the regular squirt version, so I think my ferrule is safe. As I understand it, the entire difference between the regular and low squirt USSs lies in the ferrule, there's no hollowed out part of the shaft. So it stands to reason that the LS ferrule must be noticeably thinner.
