The Philippine National Pool Championships is currently being held to establish a ranking system in the country. Amazingly, this is the very first time that the "Official" national organization is holding such. This government supported organization, BSCP, is finally setting things straight after undergoing a change of leadership of the organization.

From what I witnessed during the recently concluded qualifiers, this new group is really working hard for the development of the sport here in the Philippines. Aside from the discipline and fairness, witnessed by yours truly, they are also employing currently available technology to their advantage and this is a huge improvement from the previous system.

I liked reading many of the players' nicknames, Snooky, Superman, a couple of Batas, and I didn't know Luat's nickname was "Boy Sampson." :p

It's a very strong-looking field. That's for sure! :eek:

Dacer and Parica in the first round?
I hope they're wearing Bang Bangs or bell bottoms.:eek: :D
 
It's about time something like this was held in the Philippines. Who knows what other kinds of magicians we'll get to see because of this. Congratulations!
 
Considering some of the names on that list it will definitely be one tough tournament to win.

I would keep your eyes on Lee Van Corteza, he is a great young player that shouldn't be underestimated.
 
This sounds like excellent news! I hope the new leadership serves the game well for your countrymen, with fairness and discipline as you say.

Did all entrants have to qualify? Any idea how many tried to qualify? Pardon my curiosity, but I think you may have been too humble when I suggested that a fair number of these players might succeed in the IPT. The talent pool in the Philipines looks to run very deep, and I'll be watching to see how the tournament plays out. Thanks for posting this news.

i believe there were regionals to qulify...someone correct me if i'm wrong, i thnk thats how some teenagers qulaified....aren't they like 14-15to 18 years old?

If the slot is limited, then there is always qualifiers. Seeded players are just waiting. From what I read only final 64 are on the main draw.
 
16 years old Renemar "Revo" David garnered the #18th rank in the Philippine 9-Ball Pool standing for his performance in the Philippine National Pool Championships. After dropping his first match to Gandy "Yang-yang" Valle, he proceeded to string wins in his next 3 matches beating Ken Escano 9-3, Carlo Biado 9-4 and Roel Esquillo 9-3 before losing to stablemate Bobby "Russian" Petiza 6-9. He had a total of 38 games won and 28 lost. Other finishers in the 17th-24th position are:
17th Corteza, Lee Van 41W-27L
19th Arpilleda, Victor 38W-39L
20th Ocampo, Jundel 37W-29L
21st Haya, Elmer 37W-29L
22nd DelaCruz, 35W-38L
23rd Parica, Jose "Amang" 28W-27L
24th Labrador, 23W-26L

I just started with Revo's formal training last May, 3 months ago, and he only learned how to play the game 3 years ago and have only been playing for money since then. Excellent performance for the last teener standing and tournament first-timer.

That's amazing. I was watching Renemar in a match (can't remember who he was with), he's pretty good. It was funny that the three players who got the press releases (Johann Chua, John Cerna, Ken Escano) didn't finish high - while the other teener and young players (Renemar David - 15, Rolando Garcia - 21 and Jeffrey De Luna - 22) did well.

Did Renemar join that 9-ball festival where Cerna finished 1st?

Actually, "Boy Samson".

He got the nickname by allegedly breaking a cue ball in two while breaking a rotation rack in Pampanga in his teens.

He later corrected the tale, saying that the ball was just nicked. :cool:

My personal favorite was Pagulayan's - though he uses "The Lion" more these days. Before that he went by the nickname of "Mao" as in Chairman Mao - a dig at both his Chinese blood and non-stop preaching. :p

There were 70 in the main qualifying stage of which 12 proceeded to the Main tournament.

Renemar didn't need to go through the Jr. Qualifying as he spots all the participants some balls and he is Northern Luzon's best player and thus represented that region.
Revo, Renemar's nick, already upped his game a notch as of today. We immediately worked on his deficiencies after his last match and went and tried it out last last. Great results! We are currently in training for the San Miguel Phil 9-Ball Open and the WPC.

Snooky's still plugging away but he needs to do some serious practicing and stamina building. He holds te most consecutive number of run-outs, 7, in the tournament. He was one of my entries as I can see that he has potential and is exciting for the crowd to watch. He zips around the table fast and does amazing shots. I do see that age may be catching up as he's of the same generation as Efren and even hang arond with Efren when they all had long hair (late 60s early 70s). I'll try and reproduce their picture with the hippie look.
 
wow, Valle 9 - 1 Dennis, I told you Valle is a better player than you give him credit for! ;) IMO valle is a top tier player from what I've seen. :confused:

Snooky's still around. His main claim to fame was winning a doubles gold medal with Gandy Valle in the Asian Games sometime in the past. They were national heroes at the time because they were the only ones who won a gold during that competition.

Talking about the Asian Games - I read a recent article that Pagulayan might skip the DOHA Asian games and the BSCP were still trying to woo him. The article I read that he could join by leaving the US on the 3rd of December (for the IPT) and arrive at the Asian Games on the 5th.

Do you guys think that the BSCP (Billiards Snooker Congress of the Philippines) should woo Pagulayan and Gandy Valle to play for the nation during the Asian Games? Or is it time for new blood (like De Luna, Garcia and Revo) to be given a chance.
