Big Dogs....
So I went to the new location for the first time yesterday. My first impression was that I liked the old Big Dogs sign better. The new one just didn't do it for me. The old one, even my 5 year old son recognized it was gone just when we drove by the old location.
The parking, hmmm.... they(the owners) will probably need to figure something out for that. I just don't think there is enough at the current time.
Now on to the inside, WOW!!!!! Everything except for some painters tape in the mens bathroom(looked as though they were still doing some painting and just didn't get done yet) looked great! Tables played great and were spaced just right. Plenty of 9' diamond tables as well as Valley bar tables. Probably could use some more 7' diamonds(just my opinion as I have one and like it alot!) And there was even some room for some more tables if they see fit to add them..
Stone work was awesome. Stone counter tops around the tables with the cut in cue holders were a nice touch. The bar's wood counter top was out of this world. Just enough of a rustic look added to the stone work. The bar itself is 3 sided with the kitchen on the back side. Kitchen prices were a bit high but not out of line for the convinence of having that type of food in the pool hall.
The bartenders did great and were super busy all night and seemed as though they kept up. The wait staff seemed friendly and were always around.
The FREE tournament had 114 men and 15 women. It started late due to some unforseen things and they were trying to get a wireless mic to do the calcutta and run the tournament. ($800ish in the calcutta) There were a handfull of impatient people but there was free pool until the tournament started. I helped with running the tournament trying to keep it moving and once it got going, I think things went smoothly. Other than some people leaving causing double bye's in the loser side, most people didn't have a huge wait in between matches. they paid the top 25% and the top 8 in the calcutta.
On to the results....
1st Theo L.
2nd Shawn G.
3rd Jimmy N.
4th Jerry M(i think!)
Thanks to Bob S. and Joe and Jonas C. for the work they did putting on the tourney and thanks to Randy H. and Rex T. and the other owners for bringing such a fine pool hall to Des Moines. :woot:
