Update on the Des Moines pool scene

Big Dogs....

So I went to the new location for the first time yesterday. My first impression was that I liked the old Big Dogs sign better. The new one just didn't do it for me. The old one, even my 5 year old son recognized it was gone just when we drove by the old location.

The parking, hmmm.... they(the owners) will probably need to figure something out for that. I just don't think there is enough at the current time.

Now on to the inside, WOW!!!!! Everything except for some painters tape in the mens bathroom(looked as though they were still doing some painting and just didn't get done yet) looked great! Tables played great and were spaced just right. Plenty of 9' diamond tables as well as Valley bar tables. Probably could use some more 7' diamonds(just my opinion as I have one and like it alot!) And there was even some room for some more tables if they see fit to add them..

Stone work was awesome. Stone counter tops around the tables with the cut in cue holders were a nice touch. The bar's wood counter top was out of this world. Just enough of a rustic look added to the stone work. The bar itself is 3 sided with the kitchen on the back side. Kitchen prices were a bit high but not out of line for the convinence of having that type of food in the pool hall.

The bartenders did great and were super busy all night and seemed as though they kept up. The wait staff seemed friendly and were always around.

The FREE tournament had 114 men and 15 women. It started late due to some unforseen things and they were trying to get a wireless mic to do the calcutta and run the tournament. ($800ish in the calcutta) There were a handfull of impatient people but there was free pool until the tournament started. I helped with running the tournament trying to keep it moving and once it got going, I think things went smoothly. Other than some people leaving causing double bye's in the loser side, most people didn't have a huge wait in between matches. they paid the top 25% and the top 8 in the calcutta.

On to the results....

1st Theo L.
2nd Shawn G.
3rd Jimmy N.
4th Jerry M(i think!)

Thanks to Bob S. and Joe and Jonas C. for the work they did putting on the tourney and thanks to Randy H. and Rex T. and the other owners for bringing such a fine pool hall to Des Moines. :woot:

So

you are telling me 114 men and 15 women which is 129 total, meaning they would have to go to a 256 tournament bracket and issue 127 byes?

Perhaps you over stated the numbers by one? Ya think?

128 person bracket. Women had their own tourney.

No thinking here. That's dangerous ........

Thanks for the math lesson though.

Sounds like a pretty good turnout of shooters for an kick-off event. Let everyone know that the Dog is back in town.

Sucks that I missed it.

I had someone that came from Iowa City tell me that they thought it was an awesome place and will be coming back for some of the regular tournaments.

Matt, sorry you had to miss out in all the fun.

It's definitely not the first!!!

9-9-9 tournament at Dogs.

Register by noon?

Holy shit, that's early for pool players! Why so early? They expecting a lot of players or something?

I'd rather it was a 9-9-9-9 tournament... 9 ball-race to 9-on nine footers-at nine o'clock! Hah!

Great pool room!

Had the opportunity to play some racks at Big Dogs Sunday night while traveling through. Des Moines, you have a real gem there and I hope you support and cherish it. That place needs to survive as too many pool rooms around the country are not.

My best compliments to the owners and staff of Big Dogs! By the way, I went in with the expectation of not receiving good service as was previously posted and it couldn't have been further from the truth. Our server stopped by our table checking on us more times than we really needed. Keep it up!

U.S. Open One Pocket is going. Only 54 players, but a strong field. Jason Chance won his first match 4-0.

Wish "The Oilman" luck!

TablePro, thanks for the pics! My wife and I are dying to go, but have been catching up on taxes and such. I think it will be a few weeks still, but after seeing the pics we are REALLY looking forward to it!

Saw that -- "Oilman" getting it done.

Wish I could watch TAR tonight -- figured SVB would make stream for sure.

Props to Jason Chance. Guaranteed 9th-12th now! Confidence sky high and nothing to lose against SVB. He's gonna come out firing. The story of how he got in the field of 64 is as good as his showing. A win away from the semi's of the Winner's side of the U.S Open. Makes you want to get a Pro cut Diamond in your basement. Let's not forget his traveling entourage ( Psychologist T. Mellon and Utility Support S. Grant). And you that Jason's head was big before he left! Go get em!
