Updates & Results: Qualifiers for the World 14.1

Actually, a few people did know about it. I saw the below flyer on facebook and possibly here. I am not sure where people usually publicize their tournaments, but I saw these out there for quite a while.

Hi Dennis. I'm about 100% sure I saw that poster too, but probably in March, and then never again. Maybe my fault for being a Facebook dinosaur. I really don't participate in Facebook other than I had to sign up to see what's going on in the PGP group.

I just think 7 people showing up proves my point. The alternative, I suppose, is to conclude that nobody in the tri state area is even interested enough in straight pool to play in a major professional tournament.

How many played in the Chicago qualifier at Red Shoes?

Just a couple of quick comments.

My first reaction, when I saw news of the Red Shoes event posted was -- I wanna play. But by the time I found out about it, like maybe just a month before, I already had plans with Gail for another trip.

I wanted to play, being a 14.1 fan (and actually having won one these qualifiers at Red Shoes a few year back) BUT then saw that IF I qualified, the actual tournament in NYC was just a month after the qualifier, so that would put me in the position of looking for a plane ticket and a hotel room 30 days out and paying primo bucks.

If I went anyway I would just be donating to the big boys, which I don't mind. I just don't want to pay a premium for the privilege.

So, while I applaud everyone for holding these things, as a practical matter, in the future a little more notice would be nice.

15 out of a possible 16.

I am not sure how Straight Pool people in the Tri State Area communicate about events of interest. In the midwest, I try to send emails and post in facebook and on AZB about our straight pool events.

It would have been nice to have had you back at the Shoe, Lou.

We probably did not pick the date much sooner than when you saw it. The New York tournament is a lot earlier this year than usual. John had figured for the qualifier in early July then realized that is when the NY tourney was. John already had flyers out with other tournaments so I think he had two dates I could pick from. I picked the earliest one to give the winners about a month so they could get their hotel and travel arrangements earlier.

True. The local qualifier in Monterey, which I'll probably play in, is on the 27th -- next Saturday. The good news is that I already have a plane ticket to NYC. The bad news is that I don't arrive until the 18th. I wonder if I could get seeded into the final 8. I also wonder what JetBlue is going to ask for a change fee in case I qualify and have to fly a week earlier. ... and the answer is $100 if I change right now, which is a little surprising. Of course there is also an additional week of hotel in NYC, but that shouldn't run more than $2000.

For those of you who will be in NYC, you may want to stop by Carom Cafe in Flushing to see the greatest 3-C players in the world including 3 generations of Ceulemanses. The open event doesn't start until Tuesday (the 21st) but the women's event starts on the 18th.

No, I appreciate all the effort, Dennis, and know everyone is trying their best. It's just that as a practical matter, even if I could have rearranged my personal schedule, there's no way I'm going to pay through the nose for travel arrangements, which is what it'd be 30 days out. It's just not enough time.

Good Luck to you in the qualifier, Bob. When you qualify, you won't have me to kick around this year. Maybe you will get to match up with Earl Herring again and run another 79 and out or whatever number it was.

Bill and I will be there as spectators starting Thursday and finishing up Sunday. Hope to see you there.

So now that I managed to win the qualifier, I have a couple of problems. The first is when do I have to arrive and the second is where to stay. The official websites seem to be uncontaminated by such information. Hint: it is not sufficient to say something like "the tournament starts on the 14th."

Anyone have info?

Bob: First of all, Congratulations.

I emailed you some info at the sonic email.

Players meeting Sunday.

Play begins Monday.

July 12, 2015 Players Meeting 8:00pm
July 13, 2015 Play Starts at 11:30am

Let me know if you did not get it.

As to where to stay, I googled the address, then looked for hotels in the area. Bill and I are at the Paper Factory Hotel which is only about 4 blocks away. http://www.paperfactoryhotel.com/?u...m_term=paper factory hotel&utm_campaign=Brand

In prior years, we stayed more like 8 blocks or so away. Plenty of hotels and the walk is no problem.

There is a small problem with the info your email pointed to. It says the tournament is in August, 2014. I hope I didn't just waste non-refundable air and hotel reservations. I have gone ahead assuming that play starts July 13.

You may want to let Charlie know that people probably would like to have current info. It might help attendance.

Unfortunately the Paperfactory is sold out, but there is a Comfort Inn that's not too much farther at $130/night (plus tax).

Where might I find out about the dress code? And other tournament details, such as the rules that will be used?

You are welcome, Bob. I am giving you the information that I received when I told them I wanted to know what the schedule is so I could plan my hotel and air tickets.

The email I sent you says players meeting July 12, 2015 at 8:00 p.m.
play begins July 13, 2015 .

Play continues through July 19, 2015.

I checked my email again to make sure it said 2015. I also looked at a calendar to make sure those dates were right.

I don't know what you mean by 2014.

I will check out the email I sent you from my office. Maybe some of the stuff didn't show up.

By the way, I see another fellow named Wei Ni also qualified. Congratulations to both of you.

I just messaged Charlie on Facebook. He had not yet been notified of the winners. I asked Wei Ni for his and I gave both emails to CW. Hopefully, he will contact both of you and you can deal with him directly.

The mail I saw, among other things, pointed at the "Info" page on the official website. That still has the info for 2014.

I will try to read your mail more carefully when I get home.
