Upsets?

I know full well that Gabe hits them good, but I still think Santos is a favorite over him.

I would call that match an upset for one reason. In May of this year, Santo played Tony Robles in the finals of the BCA Professional Open Nine Ball Championship. Also in May of this year, Gabe Owen played in the BCA Amateur Men's Masters and finished fifth / sixth with Jesse Bowman. There is something wrong with the picture. I would guess Gabe is not an amateur!

I watched part of Gabe and Santos while watching Pooky and Rodney and Rudedog and Tony Robles. Gabe was getting out on a very consistent basis and Santos just could never get in the flow of things at all.
in the past year or so, Santos has played some excellent pool. He must be ranked in the top ten in the world now?

Here are five Fillipinos I'd never back him against: 1) Reyes, 2) Bustamante, 3) Pagulayan, 4) Parica, and 5) Manalo. Here are another six Fillipinos I'm also not too keen on backing Santos against: 1) Lining, 2) Kiamko, 3) Orcollo, 4) Gallego, 5) Van Corteza, and 6) Luat. Maybe Santos is one of the ten best Fillipinos, but maybe he isn't. It's close.
Santos is a great player, but there's no reason to deem him one of the world's most elite. He hasn't earned that distinction, which is not to suggest he may not at some point in the future.
Just one man's opinion.

Speaking of upsets, I saw that McCready is out. Ike must be hitting them pretty good.

I've known Santos for about 6 years now, and when he is in stroke, he is capable of drilling anybody you mentioned above, and anyone in the world. This past year Santos has been playing world-class pool. If you did a search on him, you would be surprised at how many events he has won, and top-notch events he has placed very high in. I think you've got a wrong opinion of the man, he deserves alot more credit.

I think my post was as much an attempt to clelebrate the high standard among Fillipinos as it was an attempt to rank Santos among them. I have seeen Santos play live many times, and I know he's a great player.
Current form means Luat gets a lot of credit, too. So far this year, he has finished fith in the BCA Open, ninth in the WPC and he is still doing business on the winner's side on the US Open. Once ranked #2 on the PBT, it's nice to see him playing so well this year -- like old times.
Not to rain on anyone's parade, but perhaps we should all consider the possibility that short race 9-Ball sucks as a way of determining the best player. Maybe the best player just didn't get lucky in that short race. With a little luck there are 100 guys in that tournament who can beat the best player on earth at race-to-11 9-Ball. Though, since everyone is playing 9-Ball we don't even have a good idea who the best player is. Let's face it, 9-Ball is like an exhibition sport - we should probably have judges to rate the skill level of the individual runouts (or we could just go back to straight pool for determining the best player). End of rant JMO.

You make a great point SJM, and it's a wonder that people don't seem to talk about Luat that much. He is a very respectable person, and an amazing pool player too. I wonder why people don't talk about him and Antonio Lining that much? Antonio is supposed to be the second best money player in the Phillipines, next to Efren.
