US Open 1pocket pathetic turnout....????

The majority of pool in the US is league pool. 8-9 ball. Not many younger players are playing 1p. I bet most aren’t even aware of the game. It’s a dying game.

The last 2 times I tracked it -- 32 entrants in 2024 and 28 in 2022.

Please explain.

The DCC is a unique event. That Louisville area is full of die hard pool players who are not wealthy but it gives them a chance to rub elbows with the great players, spend time with friends and not spend a fortune traveling. There are 7 million people in the Phoenix area I believe. I think they might consider having the one in Indiana and then one in Phoenix right after monsoon . say early November.
That way the locals could all play and die hards could get in two tourneys if they wanted, Az is nice in November
The people who have time and money to go keep getting older, the hardest thing about being old to me is trying to travel, I can't get comfortable and my wife can't breathe without her machine,

Well actually, Mark bought the rights to the "US Open One Pocket" name from Matt, so at least in that respect it is the legit US One Pocket Open.

IMO, the problem is two fold: first is piss poor planning which results in this event not being advertised far enough in advance for players (and wannabe players) to plan on attending. A couple of years ago myself and a buddy decided we go donate and I called Griff's numerous times early in the year trying to get info on the event and no one knew nothin'. I tried to catch the manager and he was never available. Eventually they set a date a few months in advance only to discover weeks later there was a conflict with another event and they ended up moving the dates on short notice. We canceled our plans.

The other problem is the multi-event format that goes on and on. Mark was a big fan of these two week events arguing it was great for the players because they didn't have to travel once they got there. But realistically, the whole thing turns into a very expensive hostage situation that drags and drags, That and having to buy last minute (expensive) plane tickets makes it less than attractive. Back when Matt held the event at his room in Kalamazoo he would announce the dates of the coming year's event so everyone could make plans and he always got a great turnout.

I believe there are plenty of players that would happily support this given proper notice of the dates (and not being held hostage for days on end).

when and where was the event held in Kalamazoo? I used to live relatively near there over 25 years ago

I agree and Tunica was a step in that direction, but it failed miserably (I was there and saw it for myself -- dismal pos). Casinos (present day) are a problem.

Yea I was there too, but things have really changed with the rise of Buffalo Billiards in the area. I think it would work now because of that and ease of access to the city.

If you are saying NOLA, I am in complete motherloving agreement. Whatever it is, NO ONE puts it on like the Big Easy. I've been over there a few times and can vouch for it. All Buffalo would need is the right facility -- but they are not short in New Orleans, hotel rooms either. Never would hear another derogatory word about food. Buffalo should be talking to Brunswick, or vice versa. If Brunswick, or any manufacturer, ever wanted to get in the game it could not find a better opportunity. Anyone ever been to a show where folks stayed after and played for days? This would be one -- having too much fun to leave.

It's a scary thought, DCC would second forever. Very scary.

Yeah, they call Vegas an Island for good reason.
It is an island. I figured that out my in 91 after I was there for about 6 months (the longest I ever stayed without leaving town. It’s surrounded by 300 miles of rocks instead of water.

Since 91 I’ve lived in and out of Vegas, mostly out the last 12-13 years. The past few months I spent more time there than I had in the last 12-13 years.

Vegas has changed drastically as we all know. It’s bigger, foods much better and it’s 10X more expensive. The ratio of income to overhead is off the rails now. Sure most places are like that, however it’s more drastic in Vegas.

In 91 rent was $400/mo and you could make $1000/week if you had any drive whatsoever. That’s a great formula for getting ahead-which is why I moved there. If you have any habits, well you get sent home-some sooner than others. I never had habits. So for me it was an easy come-up place to live. That’s all over with now.

Having said that if I was going to stay in America and make a living Vegas is by far the greenest grass in America. Florida is done, Ca has been done for 40-50 years etc. Vegas just isn’t as easy as it was in the past-but what is? Or where is?

Also I think Vegas is pricing itself into an unaffordable mess and that will self correct over the next few years. Paid parking, resort fees, and all the other bullshit will be corrected not eliminated. But as it is now Vegas for tourists isn’t a good value.

It’s all in the past for me, I’m out of there, mostly. I still have income property there for now. But I’m not in town much. There are better places for me to be.

Tunica was a good idea, in theory, but the property sucked and it maybe was a bit ahead of its time. Running 2 9 day events a year is a bit ambitious.

Greg had the best intentions but most working people can’t do 2 huge pool vacations a year. And the format he has is mostly amatures with jobs.

I think one huge jamboree like derby is good and a 2nd idea like buffalo has is brilliant and there’s time and room.

Keep the casinos AWAY from both events would serve both events better. The damn casinos are the rake which pool can’t afford.

I’m not gonna go to deep into the weeds here, but yes Nola is a brilliant idea, right people, right location, culture, the whole bit and another jamboree Dwrby style outside a casino and pool would win!!!

That’s my thoughts and I’d bet they align with the old guys who been around 50-60-70 years and seen more than I have.

I have thought about relocating to Vegas so many times, and have weighed the Pros with the Cons over and over in my mind. I keep hearing that the summers are dreadful. I think about all of the pool events coming through town though, and it sounds like heaven to me. If I were to try to make the move, I know that I would have no bad habits.

Vegas is a great place to live when you don’t have habits. That’s key.

The biggest issue is the weather & dry air (that’s a personal problem I have) most ppl can fade the dry air.

It’s too hot, too cold or too windy. That’s the 3 seasons in Vegas.

Aside from the harsh climate it’s great. Lots to see and do, foods amazing now. Traffic is a joke compared to LA or Atlanta or south Fla. pool scene as you know is solid. Airport is good, lots of direct flights.

Cost of living has went up significantly over the past 20 years, as a % of income worse than most markets. However there’s lots of opportunity.

It gets closetphobic after a while, and the spelling class's aren’t very good there either lol. So leaving town is essential now and then, most people who live in Vegas leave when they can. Others don’t mind staying all the time. If you like guns, that’s a plus.
