I'm feeling, as an American, just a bit disappointed - given the current state of American professional billiards - that one of our immensely talented players was unable to step up to the plate and salvage a bit of of positivity that if properly directed could very well have been exactly what we/I needed.

Huh? Let's see we had Putnam, Archer, and Hatch in the top six players. 50% Americans.

Gee the only guy they didn't beat is the one who has been undefeated for two years in a row and playing about as perfect as a human can play.

I saw lots of positivity happening for the USA players at the US Open. They stepped up and rocked it.

No one would have beaten Darren this week.

Agree ! and oh by the way how many those foreign players actually live in the U.S ? most I believe, alex lives in vegas and darren just bought a house in philly and Mikka lives in NY...

Did I miss the US tailgate party? It is about good pool no matter where it comes from. That is what I always likes about pool, it doesn't discriminate, all it takes is a love for the game.

I understand the intent of the comment..., it would have been cool if Putman had pulled it out, just for bragging rights, fun for conversation..., but at the end of the day, as was said earlier.., good pool is good pool and great pool is great pool and this was a great week of pool!

P.S. Way to go Put-Put, my home boy and former high school hommie!!

By the way, the Americans have had more than their fair share of victories.

Hey....all 3 of the 2 time winners of our awsome US Open choose to call our country home. So even if they were born somewhere else.....like ALL our families were....except maybe native Americans........The USA is THE place to be when it comes to World Champs and where they hang out.

I look at guys like Mika, Thorsten, Darren etc. as foreign born USA players that made a courageous choice to move here and give it a go. Maybe if one of us gets Darren a USA golf shirt....he will wear it in next years finals! ;)

Even better...Darren chose my area to move to. I hear he is building a house in the Philly area! Maybe I'll call him and offer my plumbing services for the orange crush? :)

It was a great Open! A very strong and deep field of players. Shawn Putnam played great but Darren was unstoppable once again. :thumbup2:

I agree, unreal pool by darren.

Jay, if you would.... not sure if you feel like it..... what would happen, hypothetically in your estimation of Darren and SVB played a race to 120 in a few days for whatever the tournament was worth? Again, no prob if you dont feel like giving an opinion. I dont want win or lose, i want a predicted score :)

First of all, that's too long a race. In a long race (say to 75 or 80) Shane would still be hard to beat, especially playing Ten Ball. His break is just so strong, and when it's working he can string more racks than anyone. In a 9-Ball, Race to 11 match, Shane can be beaten by many other good players. These guys play so good that one or two errors can cost you the match. Why Darren is so strong right now is his consistency, never playing a bad match. He shakes off a mistake quickly and goes right back to playing great pool on his next turn.

Kind of reminds me of Buddy at his peak. I never thought I'd say this but there are sure a lot of great pool players today, that play as good or better than the greats of yesterday! It was all good players when we got down to the final 64 and the final 32 were all capable of winning anywhere they play! I didn't see one bad match. In fact they were all worth watching. Too bad we couldn't tape all the matches from the round of 32 on. You would see a lot of super pool being played!

the need to get away...

We need to get away from all separating barriers (i.e., nationality, gender, race, ethnic desent,etc) its about pool and good pool. Nothing more, nothing less!!! I dont care from what corner of the earth you hail from, if you can fire a ball off the back of the rail for the cash, I like you!!!!!!!!!

Praise the lord for seeding. Otherwise surely it would have been two guys like you and me playing for the surfboard check. :rolleyes:

Jay, can you explain in a little detail exactly how the seeding is done at the Open? How many players are seeded, and is it straight off world rankings? Also, I thought it was a full field but apparently there were some byes in the first round. How is that? Also, are the byes drawn or do they go to the top seeded players?

I don't see the harm in being passionate about wanting an American to win, or where I mentioned anything critical at all about any one particular participant. I just simply stated I would have preferred the win to come from the home soil.

The top 16 from the world rankings and the top 16 from the BCA rankings are used (some players are on both lists, so we go down to the next player). Plus Barry gets three picks of his own?? You asked so I told you.

There were six byes with 250 players and they were placed on the board prior to the draw, so anyone might get one, seeded or not.
 
I hope the guys from Japan return next year. They added depth to an already strong field.

I go to the Open to see top-notch players. I could care less where they're from.
 
The sentiment felt by the OP is exactly what Men's professional pool may need and I think I agree with him. Call me an America Firster. Call me a patriot, but think about this before you call anyone a moron....

The crowd really got behind Putnam in the finals. There were shouts of USA.. USA... USA.... Currently the Asian and European countries are using the fact that pool is under review by the IOC to provide government funding to their National organizations which are responsible for player development. Without government funding or a major sponsor the Americans have been and are losing ground... Pride in the good ole USA could be one ticket to getting that sponsor.. If David at MediumPool is out there maybe a call to the US Armed Forces needs to be made... Heaven knows they spend a ton on advertising and they should at least buy into the sentiment.....

As far as unity and Jesus loving all of the little children, black and yellow red and white... I totally concur when discussing humanity... On the pool table it is all out war. I love Mika, Ralf, Daz and a whole slew of talented foreign players but that doesn't keep me from rooting hard for a fellow American in every major event....

Matchroom gets it...

Wait until December and watch the excitement that the Mosconi Cup generates around the globe...

When you are sitting at home watching the forums like a hawk for results or you are trying desperately to find a U.K. SKY stream online so you can watch it live... you are really gonna have to ask yourself.. Who was the moron?????
