US Open One Pocket Moves to Reno

Sure. If more people were willing to be dead money in events like in poker then pool would have more money in the game overall for the top players to divide amongst themselves.

Pool isn't in the gutter though. And I play for the thrill of victory every time. Only I do it in one on one tournaments nightly against tough action.

In the past three weeks I put more than 2000 into the pool economy. Do you want to hear the poetic stories with champion name dropping?

Plenty of players are willing to be dead money in pool tournaments. You're just never going to get a 1000+ player field like you do in poker tournaments. Not to mention, in a poker tournament, the dead money always has a shot until they're out of chips. In pool, the dead money players never have a chance.

Pool without gambling, would be like going to Starbucks and not getting Coffee

The only reason gambling reigns supreme is because it's a better money maker, and most of the top players have to gamble to make money. There's just not enough money in tournaments. In the last 2 years, only the top 4 players (men) at best, cracked the 6 figure mark.

Now I think things would be a little different if tournament payouts were such that the top 20 players were making 6 figures minimum each year. Gambling wouldn't go away (and it shouldn't), but it wouldn't be as much as a necessity as it is today.

In a nutshell, most players need to gamble.

I think you are correct. I think in that hypothetical world it'd be a lot like the gambling done on the PGA Tour. Very hefty sums, no backers, and hush hush.

I agree with you about poker. I disagree about pool. Just look at all the local tournaments where pros are not allowed because IF they played then no one else would play.

Where was all the dead money for the Tunica events and the Ultimate 10 Ball? I think we will have to agree to disagree about it.

The US Open one pocket should be a 256 player field in my opinion. I'd happily play in it or at least play in qualifiers trying to win a paid spot like the poker players do with their local cheap buy-in events. But it's a 48 player field which might not even fill up. But with a 48 player filed their should be 48 players capable of winning it battling it out. Instead a lot of the guys in it will be pool-vacation types like Lou. Just not enough of them to really support pro pool.

Hats off to Mark and Bill for running it for it's more a labor of love than anything else.

US Open One Pocket

Dean,

This is one of several events that CSI does every year.
The Galveston event was several years ago and you did thank me.

I saw Denny a couple months ago at the TAR studio.

My health is fine. I have had emphysema for many years. I quit smoking 23 years ago but my habits have caught up to me. I recently was put on oxygen. That is to help extend my life.

It probably looks worse than it is. I am 67 and would be tickled to make it to 75. My overall health is pretty good - and I'm not planning on quitting anytime soon, but I am starting to work less days per week.

I would love to come bAck down and get stuck again in your driveway!!

Talk to you later

Mark griffin

Hey Mark thanks for the post
are you producing this tournament?
I have been eager to see you pump some
life into pool.

Your conversation in Galveston last year was the most exciting common sense
approach i ever heard.combining the pro and league concept, each feeding off of and benefiting each other made a lot of sense to me

it was the only approach i ever heard that combined the two, promoting and benefiting everyone in the industry

i really appreciated the free meal even more, did i get a chance to thank you?or was that Denny Glenn
,who cares when lunch is free

I talked with Denny today and he expressed concern for your health,

come see us soon
dean and june

Watching the TAR podcast now on Youtube and catching up. To those playing the US Open 1 Pocket, stick and stay and make that mother$&@*%* pay! Get well Mark.

Dead money makes big poker events, but I dont see that happening in pool. If it would, the prize money in pool would go way up, Dead money in poker has a chance of being at a table with one of the big names. They all show up plus 9 or 10 handed at the tables not heads up. Just better odds of playing with the top players. Also, there is a luck factor in poker that lets some real dead money players cash and even win. Luck might make a shot or 2 in pool, but imho not win a race to 7 or 9.
As I was typing this I was trying to think of a way to get more "Joe Average" into pool events, but I really can not think of one. Might not play a top pro, but maybe at a table next to them.
