Use of the word "stick" in reference to a pool cue

Didn't mean to offend in any way, please see my edit. It's the term "stick", not the southern accent that bothers me.

Well cheapcues.com, if you don't want to take the heat, I will! Step aside...

"Yeah, mm4pool, I have an issue with the wrong syllable of a word being accented, like they do in the south. But I also have an issue with the alphabet-diminished Bostonians, too. As well as the thick-as-soup New Yawkas... and the nasaly Minnesotans... and... and... come to think of it, I don't like the way I speak, either!" :p

Got a problem wid dat? :D

DISCLAIMER for the humor-impaired: the above is entirely tongue-in-cheek to get the thread back on track, which is the focus on the colloquial word "stick" to refer to a "pool cue."

I have no problem with using the word stick. When I was young, that was the accepted word, as in "I can't play tonight because a dinosaur stepped on my stick." or "I need a new stick, because a pterodactyl flew away with my old one."

What do you call a Boomerang that doesn't work?
A stick.

Like I said, I prefer the word cue, but stick doesn't bother me much.
Its when someone says, "Do you want to shoot some stick".
For some reason, that sentence makes my balls contract just a tad.

Pool for the most part is an art form and a gentleman's game.

Shooting some stick just sounds trailer trashy to me.

It drives my wife crazy when I say "fishing stick". Although it would probably bother Gary Loomis, too. I also prefer the term "cue".

A Black guy taught me a few things about pool while we were in the Navy in the mid 60's.

I was ahead several balls playing straight pool. During his inning I politely reminded him of how far behind he was. He turned and said, "Yeah, but the Man still has the stick in his hands!"

That was Robert Brown, aka "Brownie". I miss you, man, wherever you are.

Jeez, forty some odd years ago and I'm getting all teary eyed.

Hell yes, it's a Stick.

Just wondering if I'm the only one this bothers. I hate it when people use the word "stick" instead of cue.
**edited as I want to emphasize the use of the word "stick", not the southern accent. People from all parts of the country, even the world use that work regardless of their accent or dialect. I apologize to those I offended.**

I don't like the use of the word "stick" to describe a cue. I think it sounds demeaning.

When did the forums start to cater to politically correct candy asses? I've never seen so much blithering dribble in my life. Get a life guys. Who in their right mind is truly offended because somebody calls their precious cue a stick? Get over it.

Why shoud it bother you that I don't like it.. and that others don't like it. Some call it a stick. I think that is demeaning to the guy who spent hundreds of hours making it. I think pool cues are pieces of art and deserve respect. Some don't. No big deal. That's just what I think.

I prefer cue, but stick isn't so bad. Cuestick, on the other hand, rubs me the wrong way for some reason.

A cue is a cue and a cue ball is a cue ball, right?

It can also be referred to as a club which is still better than mace ass. Whatever it's called, I can't stand one that makes any sort of noise that could be construed as metallic - like the ping some people think is a quality.

Other equipment noise can be very problematic. An acquaintance of mine told me he had given up on one of his White metal detectors because it just made erotic noises.

Don't get it..do I need to know from metal detectors?
Enlighten please

While I'm here....
Don't mind cue or stick.
But I tend to honor the cue-maker when talking about mine...
..got a JOSS,TAD,JENSEN...etc.
If a person don't know what that means...I usually ask them if they
wanna knock some around cheap..like $300 a game..

But I have to confess...if they refer to their cue as their 'wood'....
...it bugs me..sounds like no respect.

I've had beginners tell they needed a new 'tip' when they actually
mean 'shaft'...blood starts to leak from the corner of my mouth..

I always call it a cue, but I live in Oklahoma in a rural area...

If I got mad every time I heard it called a stick, I'd have to kill a whole lot of people.

If i was a cuemaker it might bother me. But since im not its no biggie. What does bother me is "my pistol has a 17rnd clip". Nope its a magazine you idiot.

I have a buddy that calls it a "pole". When he sees me with a new cue, he always asks if I got a new pole. If you caught a big "fish" on your pole at the pool room, that would be ok now, wouldn't it?

Yes, you are the only one it bothers :-)

my step brother used to say he was going to go shoot some stick, and that was when I was in middle school, but I knew what he meant, and thought it was a cool thing to say.
