USPPA Reno players, did they get paid?

Tony did verbaly in all meeting and in the begining of all tournaments that you had to have sheets for the free ride or you couldn't play unless you pay. So if you are short sheets or didnt renew then you have to pay for the events.

good news is Tony is trying to come up with the money that didnt get added by a big mixup by someone else but he is making good on it slower then slow but it is happening.

But this years tournament is still on I'm sure he will have it spelled out better about rules and requirments.

You know if we can get 200-300 to stay @ the Peppermill as a thank you for letting the westcoast have a large tournament there. I'm sure the Peppermill will through in more money, they can make it up from all of gambling there.

Future of USPPA & West Coast Pool

I spent most of the day reading this thread from beginning to end and wanted to chime in. I also run the West Coast Pool Players website and chose not to attend, but promoted, the USPPA Reno event on it.

I started playing pool competitively in '98 when I first got into BCA leagues via the Diablo Valley Pool League, I always heard others referring to other player's handicaps with much higher digits than I was accustomed to hearing, like "Watch out for him he's a 100 speed." That was my first introduction to USPPA, so I tried a few USPPA tournaments out. I was clocked as a 70 speed simply by playing a practice game with another player and my handicap has never changed, probably since I never played more than a dozen USPPA events.

I moved to Alaska in '01, after living in Alaska for several years, I returned to the California Bay Area in '08. In my absence in Alaska I heard the news about our friend, Dave Piona, passing, but it wasn't until I started getting around and playing in halls here in the bay area that I started hearing reports from room owners about the USPPA seemingly going downhill.

At the 1st Chet Itow Memorial Tournament at CBC, Tony said my membership was expired, and promised me and everyone else, a free year's membership. Well my membership was not expired (as I had recently renewed it the June before but never received my membership card - I just again located my temporary receipt to confirm this), but I accepted his offer anyway. Again I never received a membership card, nor did I ever see my name on the list of current USPPA members. In fact this may be true for all those who attended and were "given" free memberships because I heard from the owner of CBC that Tony left the completed membership forms there.

So between the hearsay amongst disgruntled room owners about the impending demise of the USPPA and the simple fact that I didn't have enough sheets in to qualify, I did not attend Reno. I did not really support the USPPA since my return to California simply because for a business whose primary service involves consistent and accurate record-keeping I thought it odd that my handicap never has changed, that I never received a membership card (whether paid or free), and that I did not see my name as member on their website.

In the weeks leading up to Reno, I noticed the date change for the event, and that many of the other major pool mags and websites had the old info. So I made a post on my site with the corrected dates, and contacted Tony. Tony at that time mentioned something that confused me, he started talking about poker and working with industry players at a very high level.

Then I watched the live streams from Reno, heard and saw the players and payouts, and I got ALL EXCITED, thinking to myself, "Well I'll be sure to qualify for next year's RENO event." $100 entry, if I knock off this tourney and get paid $5000 and then win the poker tourney to qualify for the WSOP Main event, isn't that like $15k in winnings not including the payout for the poker tourney since a seat to the WSOP is $10k (assuming you could pull of wins in both - very small odds for me, but you say there's chance)?

So now, with the money lagging, and no explanation, I am back to where I started, no membership card and no real interest to play in the USPPA.

But I can't let this go. Why?

The idea of a statistically accurate, objective method of clocking players and handicapping games is what I believe was the best thing going for the USPPA. It seems that this format may have fared better for me than Paul Bramwell putting me in as an A in the CPPT, or Kevin making me play George Michaels even in the weekly 10-ball at Crown Billiards. I really don't think I shoot *that* good.

I also hear people talking about the good ole days and see Bob's post #264 here and wonder wow, that looks neat. I never got to experience those days.

Spots in pool are tough, because performance is variable. But I think the USPPA system was/is a good one, if managed and implemented properly. It helped me differentiate skills levels between players that a bar league average would not identify, as well as putting me in the ring with tougher players on better equipment. I always heard of concerns that some players intentionally manipulated the system, so they could play the big events with a much lower handicap to cash. Now with the whole debacle over Reno payouts, it seems a quick, healthy recovery for the USPPA handicap system is unlikely.

In any case, all I can say is that I agree with Mike and Jay (begins around post #140) on what professional pool needs right now and 2nd Mark Griffin's idea of a pool summit of industry leaders (post #152).

In the meantime, I will try out Bob's WorldPPA system assuming he doesn't overrate me since I got lucky and beat him 4 sets of 9-ball last time we played.

Peppermill and Tony thrilled - Players not to much!!!

Hi Craig!!! I think I understand two things about your post. You being a good guy, are trying to make something positive out of this and that by keeping on the good side of Tony, you might stand a chance of getting something in return for all your great efforts in setting up all the tables!! I'm sure all the players appreciate that of course because you made it happen for them.

How can the players trust Tony when he won't even stand up for himself and tell what happened?

How can Tony be trusted by the players at the next event? I know the players and they will want to have a good tournament in Reno and they will go out of their way to win some cash for their efforts.

It would be really nice to have someone run the tournament that everyone respects. Can you imaging what it would be like if Mark Griffin put it on or Fatboy or Jay Helfert? It would be fantastic because they are respected and are trusted!!!

Anyway Craig, if you get the table mechanic job again, I hope he doesn't cuff you!!!!!

Well of course you had to pay for the usppa tournament. Entry fees, duh,
The only thing left was the poker and that was a free ride supposedly if you paid him to qualify and stay at the Peppermill which is bogus as pointed out earlier. So what has any of this to do with paying out. So where is the money he did collect from the fees and money people paid to qualify?
Where do u get if 200 t0 300 show up for thanks. Thanks for what. We did not have tro show up at the Sands for thanks. It was automatic for 20 years and they loved us showing up. Tony screwed that up too. Doesn't seem to be any problem with the Bar Table championships coming up. Any casino in Reno shoild be begging for customers no matter where they stay. Reno is almost a ghost town now compared to the past. And letting the West Coast have a tournament? Do u have bats in the belfry? There are major tournaments on the West Coast, we don't have to go to Reno. California Billiard Club is a major example as is both Hard Times. Like I told you in an answer to you not being able to find the stay at the Peppermill quote.
Dig deeper when you make statements.
P.S. Name "ANYONE" that has gotten paid. Have another smoke.

Jeff I know what you mean but until Tony say's it outload only one post on here had it close to what the real problem was everyone else is just stabbing and guessing to what happened Iwas told 3 different stories 1about checks logical 2 where the money went logical 3 what realy happened someone didnt reach there goals so money wasn't given to be added so now Tony is coming up with money. Has for reno learning lesson plus a good time even with all the negativity. Has for still doing tables tony tells me he has tables for me to do but never calls to tell me dates and times but every check he has given me has cleared no problems.

So how do you like your new house I heard your having some fun out there.

it was said not written read again. Steve in reno Jeff in Reno was told most small pay outs but non of the big ones personaly I have no intrest in the when or who they get paid in what order to many weeks have gone by and I do have alot of friends that never got paid and a few that have.

Flame on if you want but It was never printed you had to stay at the pepermill.

I dont smoke so smoke two more for me and get that ticket.

Craig,

I like you so dont take this the wrong way, but wake the f$%k up!!!!!

This tournament should have been cancelled if Tony did not have the added money in hand before the event. He F$%ked up royaly and because of his" I'm better then everyone attitude" he has put the USPPA in the ground.

Just to give you an idea of the bullshit that Tony does, he tried to cause problems for me with the DA and police dept, by telling them that I had stolen money from the USPPA. He did this on the Friday of the Chet Itow Memorial Tournament." CRAIG" he lied to the police and tried to disrupt our tournament. Next time you speak with him please let him know that he can come anytime to one of my tournaments and I will show him how to run a succesfull event and how to pay the players the day of.

I have been a supporter of the USPPA for years and this is how he treats a supporter. Ask the Broken Rack what he is doing to his long time supporters. 200 to 300 to say thanks, maybe 1 will show TONY A. and that one will probably have to what a few months to get the check in the mail!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm having fun with the thread/threats all he had to do was change the pay outs to match the money he never released the payout tilli think day 3 of the tourny so your right he should have cancelled or charged the payout insyead he just dragging it out. funny thing is he hates when I post anything on here. I should untie any ties with him everyone I know in the billiard industry told me to walk away I should have but I enjoy a good challange for working on tables.

I just stir the pot a little different then others most keep missquoting what the last person typed.

File a class action or drive to his pool hall and get paid or take in iou +plus take his antique tables till you get paid shut him down. get in his face person to person kcuf typing fag nasties they need to step up and tack action.

He threatens with law suite so counter with your own by filling one or a lien on his business.

Hell give everyone 10% off table time for burning ther usppas card and not renewing it. why not 3 other pool halls quit running tournaments and sent out letters to others to buy better equipment or fix tables to 4-1/2" openings.

i'm not standing up for him nor am i promoting what he did. its how everyone thinks there right on what happened thats whats funny.

so is everyone rushing back to the apa, bca, tap, I know theres more just forgetting them for now.

my last post on this because its going to get ugly no matter how it ends it's taking way to long to have been settled properly. I hate to loose new and old friends over it. Must on here think I'm a jackass so be it but when they meet me in person there relize I'm not I just type random jiberish.

Craig

Ca Billiard Club, No kidding!!!!! If this is the case (and I am not saying its not)you have grounds for legal action. There is an Attorney I know that works in the Santa Clara District Attorneys office. I can call him if you like. If he filed false charges against you that is beyond reproach. Tony has fallen off the deep end. Instead of inviting him to your place to show how a tournament is run, invite him to meet bubba at Soledad. With his actions of not paying out the tournament and his repeated demonstrative actions against rooms that USED to hold the USPPA, he shows his utter contempt for the rest of the pool community. The pool community should show him the same respect, none. He's not at the DCC because they don't want his bull here. I would have to say for myself, that Tony is no longer someone I can defend. You guys that haven't been paid, file a suit against him for fraud. His took your money under false pretense. Jeff or any of you that haven't been paid, this isn't like getting stiffed in a game, this is a business defrauding you. If you think you're going to get paid, I have some beach front property in Lancaster. (Actually it's Mrs Kentuckys and it's in the Mohave)

I think that highlighted paragraph above is very interesting. Would anyone here contact a District Attorney AND the police with the intent of lying to them just to disrupt a tournament? I know I wouldn't.

I will inform you for the 2nd time where to find it in print. I guess you consider printed on a website, in print.

Go to usppa.com, click on the woman playing pool for more info on the Paific Rim expo, then click on the right, expo details.
Up pops the info on staying at the Peppermill.
There you go.
Chris states he thinks it was added later. I do not know.

I have the original flier, and it says nothing about staying at the Peppermill. The one that is on the site now has it???????????????

Tony told me last week that he still needed to talk to some of his contacts before he would post the payment plan to the players on the USPPA website. I wish he would stop saying he is going to do all these things and not come through with ANY action.
Here it is coming up on 7 weeks after the tournament and I still have not gotten paid. I have been very patient, but having this happen really makes me not want to play any pool for awhile.
I have spent too much time waiting, all the anxiety of waiting week after week, I wish there is something I could do about it, anybody have any ideas, Tony said it would be at least 2 months before I got paid, and I am starting to think he did something with my money that I won. Thanks for any advice.:sorry:

Wow!!!

I know you have supported him in the past, and for him to keep extending and extending is not right. Problem is: Tony A does not own the USPPA, so you would have to go after the true owner. We all know the only thing tony has is his car!!!!!! The poolhall he runs is not his either. This is a tough situation for all the players to be in and I do feel bad for you and the others. I hope you will still continue to play for we would miss a good player and friend if you choose to hang it up!!!!!!!!!!

Chris

I think it was added later but I didn't try the website before the tournament. all I saw was printed material but i work on tables more then i help out on tournaments.

It's all cool,

Criag

Write comedic skits it will be like a time capsule for people that could relate to what you are experiencing. Short dialogs like the one you just posted can be made into a comedic skit. Usually the dialog creates a character in your post the two characters were created a power hungry and money drunk business operator and the lowly and abused pool player.

If enough people read it and relate to it then maybe someone will have an idea about how to prevent it in the future.

In a dark comedic skit, the person waiting would be a divorced couple and the wife is waiting to collect alimony payments and child support, while the husband is vacationing in a foreign country being entertained by native "models."

In a perverse comedic skit it would be a child waiting for child support payments from a deadbeat dad who is working hard to support the local drug dealer or casino house. The comedic aspect is the child is waiting at the drug house because that is where the mom works.

Does not make sense to me

What am I missing with this whole discussion? $100 entry fee. 100 players. $8,000 first place...$5000 second place.. lots of payouts down the line to $100 per player? Do people pay to watch these matches? Does the hotel pay extra to have the event there? Who pays for the table set-up? Do all people who put on tournaments have a bunch of extra money to put into the tournament? Please help me................

If someone has the original flyer, post it on the thread. Jeff, check out the small claims laws in your area. It should be on the web. Since Tony is an employee, the only thing you can get legally may be zip in court. You will have to go to the web site and check your options. The other alternative would be gather as many people as possible that are owed money. Take that list, the flyer and any FACTS to either a local district attorney or a civil attorney. It all depends on how much time and energy something like this can take from you. Tony, as you know, could weave a million stories that sound plausible. When you've had enough bull, something will happen. Meditate on it for a few days and wait for the answer.
BTW The three thousand I lost to you last week? Uh, well, I have a plan to pay you and I wil send you a check in a few weeks. My money got entangled at the border. It should be released from the bank shortly.
A funny thing happened at the DCC. someone who looked just like Tony told everyone the Casino had the pool money winnings tied up and everyone would
be getting a check in the mail.
I'm looking forward to playing in the new bank tournament at CB.

Are you a cop or something?

The players got stiffed there are no payments. Your complaining won't change that.

The problem is people don't understand the USPPA and people who deal with the USPPA prize money at the Reno event failed to do their job. What you need to focus on is that players paid entry fees and put on a tournament while someone swiped the cash for an all expenses paid trip with the prize money.

What else could have happened? It is only a small organization the guy mismanaged funds and is skating on thin ice as people mount speculation.

The most important thing to think about is how the spamming has gotten worse at AZ and is watering down the quality of events and prize payouts.

Why are you having such a hard time understanding that the players got scammed? And from the gossip here some room operators as well.
